Contraindications to laser vision correction |
12.12.2018 |
Nowadays, laser vision correction is extremely popular as it enables you to have your vision defect corrected permanently. However, like every surgical procedure, it also has a number of contraindications which may disqualify you from laser vision correction temporarily or even permanently. The list of contraindications keeps changing and what used to be an obstacle impossible to overcome in the past is currently possible thanks to innovative solutions. Technological and scientific development in recent years has a significant influence on this kind of changes.
INSUFFICIENT AGE – the procedure is suitable for patients over the age of 18. Below this age the visual system is not fully developed and although performing laser vision correction at such a stage is not really dangerous, its results may prove to be short-lived due to instability of the refractive error.
PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING PERIOD – it is a special situation when a woman’s body undergo huge hormonal changes which may contribute to instability of our vision and slow down the eye healing process. Moreover, after the surgery eye drops with antibiotic are prescribed which may transfer into the placenta or the breast milk and pose a threat to the infant.
BACTERIAL AND VIRAL EYE INFLAMMATORY CONDITIONS – any invasive procedure performed in such a situation may have a negative influence on the eyes, i.e. exacerbate the inflammatory condition and slow down the tissue healing process following the surgery.
DECREASED IMMUNITY – immunity system disorders may lead to a significant increase in healing time and pose a risk of various complications. Therefore, it is advisable to postpone the procedure until immunity is restored and we are completely healthy.
CHRONIC DISEASES – such as advanced diabetes, rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, bronchial asthma, heart conditions or AIDS. In case of such diseases, healing time following laser vision correction may be very long and there is a risk of future complications, including even a decrease in visual acuity.
SKIN CONDITIONS – such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, eczema, and those conditions in which the skin becomes prone to scarring.
MENTAL AND NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES – patients suffering from such diseases often behave in an unpredictable way, which may seriously complicate the course of the surgery itself as well as the recovery period afterwards.
SEVERE EYE DISEASES – such as: optic atrophy, cataract, glaucoma, retinopathies, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and others.
Regardless of the list above, the preliminary qualifying examination conducted by an ophthalmologist plays a crucial role for your qualification and its results determine your eligibility for laser vision correction. Therefore, if you have any doubts regarding the procedure, ask our specialists by using the ASK A DOCTOR tab or make an appointment for the preliminary qualifying examination for laser vision correction, during which a doctor will suggest the most suitable surgery method based on your test results and will explain the treatment procedure to you, present the predicted surgery results and answer all your questions.
