Eye misalignment – can laser vision correction be a suitable solution?

One of my eyes tend to be misaligned. The glasses I wear slightly correct it. Can laser vision correction help to align it properly? I do not see any difference in vision but I am dissatisfied with this condition for aesthetic reasons.
Beata

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction is not a procedure that sets the eye in the correct position. First and foremost, you need to undergo a qualifying examination to determine the degree of the misalignment and the reason behind it. Additionally, it is worth conducting a contact lens test. Contact lenses of optimal power are selected for the patient and the patient wears them for a recommended period of time to verify if the eye alignment is modified. Normally, the final effect of the laser vision correction procedure will match the vision obtained while wearing the contact lenses.

Does laser vision correction improve spatial vision?

I used to be a professional soldier and I was discharged from the military due to detection of spatial vision disorder, which I had not experienced before. A military ophthalmologist stated that it was due to excessive discrepancy in vision defects. Can a laser vision correction procedure help?
Wojciech

Doctor’s answer
The laser vision correction surgery corrects refractive errors, i.e. myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism and combinations of these defects. Laser correction may additionally lead to an improvement of spatial vision. However, it needs to be remembered that this procedure is not aimed to be a treatment for the lack of stereoscopic vision.

Without a thorough qualifying examination, we are not able to determine whether in your case laser vision correction will also improve your spatial vision whose lack might be resulting from a refractive error.

Discomfort caused by contact lenses and Dry Eye Syndrome (DES)

I have a stable vision defect, and I wear contact lenses daily. When the lens replacement time approaches, in the evening they no longer feel moisturised, which makes me feel them on my eyes. I take off the lenses without any problems. They are not “attached” to the eye, but smoothly on its surface. When I wear glasses, I do not notice this problem. I wonder if this could be a contraindication to laser vision correction. The only information that I come across while browsing the internet for answers is Dry Eye Syndrome. I have read that this condition might be a contraindication to performing the correction procedure.
Dominika

Doctor’s answer
Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is a disease that constitutes a contraindication to refractive surgery, but based on the description provided, it is not possible to clearly determine whether this condition applies to you.Typically, the symptoms of DES occur permanently, with varying intensity.

If you wear biweekly or monthly contact lenses, it is usually normal to feel discomfort and eye dryness at the end of the application period. Most commonly, those symptoms can be eliminated by increasing the frequency of lubricating the lenses during the day, applying moisturising eye drops or changing the types of lenses you wear.

We encourage you to make an appointment for a preliminary examination qualifying for laser vision correction (https://www.artlife.com.pl/posts/what-does-preliminary-examination-qualifying-for-a-laser-vision-correction-surgery-consist-of-1066.php), during which an ophthalmologist will address all your doubts after performing the necessary tests.

Residual defect after the laser vision correction surgery – how much is the next procedure?

I am interested in having the laser vision correction surgery. I have already found almost all information on your website, but there is one more question that I need an answer for – if the vision defect is not fully corrected, is it possible to perform a complementary correction procedure without any additional fees, to correct the remaining defect?
Aneta

Doctor’s answer
If after the laser vision correction procedure the so-called residual defect remains, the ophthalmic surgeon may recommend further correction, but only on condition that the current corneal parameters, especially corneal thickness, are not a contraindication to performing another procedure.

The residual defect correction is conducted as part of the selected treatment, within 12 months after the first laser vision correction surgery. It can be considered not earlier than 6 months after the first procedure as this is the time required for the vision stabilisation. If the patient is concerned about any symptoms and their vision is not completely clear, it is worth undergoing a check-up examination before this six-month period finishes.

Laser vision correction – how to prepare for the one-day procedure?

I am considering having a laser vision correction surgery in the one-day-procedure mode. Could you provide me with more details as to how to prepare for the procedure and whether you issue a sick leave certificate. What if the patient has eyelash extensions? Is it necessary to remove them before the procedure or will they not interfere?
Joanna

Doctor’s answer
You should come for the laser vision correction surgery without eyelash extensions, but do not remove them just before the procedure. It is worth keeping a break of at least a week. On the day of the procedure, you are not allowed to wear any make-up.

As for recommendations regarding preparation for the one-day procedure, detailed information is sent to the patient along with confirmation of registration for a specific date. The most important details can also be found in the article titled “How to prepare for a one-day procedure – the examination and the laser vision correction surgery on the same day?” on our website.

A sick leave can be issued if required. Its length depends primarily on the nature of work the patient does and and the selected laser vision correction method.

Eyelash lamination before the laser vision correction procedure

Can I have my eyelashes laminated a few days before the laser vision correction procedure?
Julia

Doctor’s answer Eyelash lamination products contain irritating agents and may contribute to eye or conjunctiva irritation and any inflammatory condition will be a contraindication to performing the laser vision correction surgery. Therefore we recommend scheduling the eyelash lamination procedure for at least 10-14 days prior to the laser vision correction procedure.

Following the laser vision correction surgery, it is advised to wait a month before the next eyelash styling procedure. However, the best solution is to consult this matter with the operating ophthalmic surgeon during the follow-up appointment.

Diabetic retinopathy and laser vision correction

Is diabetic retinopathy a contraindication to performing the laser vision correction procedure? I have a refractive error with a sphere value of -13 dioptres and a cylinder value of 2 dioptres.
Maria

Doctor’s answer
Diabetic retinopathy may be a contraindication to the laser vision correction procedure. First and foremost, during the preliminary qualifying examination, the extent of changes in the retina should be assessed and their possible development observed. However, if we are dealing with proliferative diabetic retinopathy, which is characterised by a more serious course and complications, this is an absolute contraindication to the laser vision correction surgery.

Moreover, the value of -13 dioptres is at the upper limit of the laser operating range. With such high myopia it may turn out that the cornea is too thin for the procedure to be performed safely.

Why do various laser vision correction methods have different prices?

From what I have read, the SBK LASIK method is the least painful of all and probably the most suitable for me as well. Why is the TransPRK method more expensive and in which cases is it recommended?
Marcin

Doctor’s answer
In the case of the SBK LASIK correction method, the vision stabilises more quickly, and the patient experiences only minor painful sensations for usually not longer than 24 hours. This is due to the fact that during the procedure a corneal flap is created which is then put back in place after the correction has been performed.

After the laser vision correction performed using this method, the patient needs to be especially careful not to do anything that could cause the displacement of the corneal flap. For this reason, the SBK LASIK is not recommended to people who lead an active lifestyle and practise sports, especially contact ones. The SBK LASIK method requires that patients significantly limit physical effort for at least 30 days following the procedure.

If the patient is a very active person, provided their corneal parameters are appropriate, and the refractive error is not too severe, the TransPRK method will be a better solution. Although the ailments after the procedure will be slightly more noticeable and the vision will stabilise gradually, a definite advantage of this method will be the possibility of returning to physical activity much earlier – even as soon as 14 days after the procedure, depending on the course of the healing process.

A number of factors influence the price of various laser vision correction methods, including the cost of medical materials or special dedicated disposable tools that are used during the procedure performed with a given method, and medications you will be provided with for the convalescence period.

Laser vision correction before the age of 40 — does it make sense?

I will be 39 this year. I have a vision defect of about -2,0 dioptres in both eyes. For the last year, it has slightly decreased and according to my ophthalmologist I am approaching the time when my close-up vision will deteriorate and hence this change. Does it make sense to correct my vision defect at this age? I detest wearing glasses or contact lenses, but I am wondering whether the timing is suitable and whether I will not have to repeat the procedure soon to correct the close-range vision.
Ewelina

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction does not correct presbyopia, because it is not a vision defect, but the effect of physiological changes occurring in the body as a result of the aging process.

Our clinic corrects only vision defects, i.e. the values you have in your glasses/contact lenses that you wear on an everyday basis to see clearly in the distance.

Following the laser vision correction surgery, you will not wear glasses or contact lenses for distance vision, but you will still need to wear reading glasses. If you do not decide to undergo the procedure, you will have to wear close-up vision glasses in addition to distance vision ones or you will need multifocal glasses/lenses.

Driving a vehicle after a laser vision correction surger

Is it possible to drive a car directly after the laser vision correction surgery?
Agnieszka

Doctor’s answer
Immediately after the laser vision correction procedure, the patient is absolutely not allowed to drive any vehicles at least until the first follow-up appointment, which is scheduled either for the next day after the surgery (SBK LASIK) or a week later (TransPRK, LASEK). The treating ophthalmic surgeon should decide whether the patient can get behind the steering wheel after the follow-up examination. Depending on the conducted measurements and the assessment of the convalescence period, they may recommend a longer break from driving vehicles.

After the qualifying examination, driving a car is also forbidden until the dilating eye drops wear off. Distorted vision normally lasts for approximately 3-4 hours following the examination.

311 nm UVB phototherapy and laser vision correction

I am currently undergoing phototherapy for vitiligo. Is the continuation of the therapy a contraindication to the laser vision correction surgery?
Sowjanya

Doctor’s answer
Phototherapy itself is not a contraindication to the procedure. Using protective glasses during a radiation session may be a problem. They are tight and create a lot of pressure on the eye area.

Due to this fact, the therapy will have to be interrupted for at least 30 days after the laser vision correction surgery. This is the real time required for the cornea to heal.

Air travel and the convalescence period following a laser vision correction procedure

How long after the procedure can I fly by plane? Is the date of the surgery imposed in advance or do I have options to choose the date? How long will the recovery take?
Julia

Doctor’s answer
Following the laser vision correction surgery performed with the use of the correction methods offered in our clinic, there are no contraindications to travelling by plane. What needs to be taken into account while booking the airline tickets, however, is the date of the first, mandatory follow-up examination – it can be scheduled either a day (SBK LASIK) or a week (TransPRK, LASEK) after the procedure.

We normally conduct qualifying examinations and laser vision correction procedures on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At the registration stage, depending on the availability of dates, patients can adjust the date of the appointment to their plans. We suggest making an appointment 3-4 weeks in advance.

Directly after the correction surgery, the patient may experience the following ailments: the feeling of a foreign body in the eye, tearing, stinging under the eyelids or pain. The intensity of the above symptoms and the time needed for them to wear off depend largely on the correction method applied during the procedure. They usually disappear after 1-3 days. More information on the post-operative recommendations that should be followed after the laser vision correction procedure is available in the articles on our website: “Laser vision correction – post-operative recommendations” and “When is it possible to return to practising sports after laser vision correction?”.

Sclerotherapy before the laser vision correction procedure

Is sclerotherapy a contraindication to laser vision correction if it is performed a few days earlier?
Nina

Doctor’s answer
A sclerotherapy procedure is not a contraindication to the laser vision correction surgery. However, an appropriate interval should be maintained between procedures – preferably 30 days.

There are no contraindications to conducting the qualifying examination before the end of that period.

Is it possible to correct a refractive error together with presbyopia?

I am considering having the laser vision correction procedure. I wear -4.75 and -5.5 contact lenses and I am beginning to experience problems with close-up vision while reading. Is there a method of laser vision correction that can correct both defects? Can I undergo the procedure if I have well-controlled, stabilised diabetes?
Justyna

Doctor’s answer
After the age of 40, everyone experiences an age-related loss of the accommodation (https://www.artlife.com.pl/posts/eye-accommodation-disorders-1368.php) ability – presbyopia. It manifests itself through a difficulty seeing clearly at close distance. Presbyopia is a gradually progressing physiological process resulting from the ageing of the body.

To postpone the necessity to wear reading glasses, you can have the laser vision correction in the monovision mode. The effect of the correction can be simulated with the use of contact lenses and – if it is acceptable – the procedure may be performed.

Diabetes is a relative contraindication to the laser vision correction surgery. Blood test results will be necessary to prove that your glucose levels are stable and diabetes is under proper control. If you take any medications, you will also need to provide a medical certificate from your doctor specifying which medications are administered and in what dosage, as well as attesting to the fact that you remain under regular supervision of a specialist.

During the preliminary examination qualifying for the laser vision correction surgery, an ophthalmic surgeon will carefully verify whether there are no diabetes-related lesions in the retina, such as the ones that occur in retinopathy.

Post-inflammatory corneal scars and laser vision correction

Is the laser vision correction procedure possible in the case of corneal scarring resulting from previous keratitis? The scars do not have any impact on my visual acuity and I do not feel them in any way, but they are visible as clouding in a certain area of the eye.
Marta

Doctor’s answer
The decisive factor is the time when you had keratitis and the course of treatment applied.

Corneal scarring may be a contraindication to the laser vision correction surgery, but to verify the patient’s eligibility for the procedure, the scars need to be examined and a number of parameters such as their size and depth have to be measured. Our clinic offers superficial TransPRK or LASEK, which are dedicated also to patients with problematic corneas.

To be qualified for the procedure, it is necessary to undergo the full qualifying examination. It is recommended for the patients to take all the medical documentation regarding their previous keratitis and provide it at the examination.

Eye floaters — are they a contraindication to laser vision correction?

I would like to undergo a laser vision correction surgery this year, but I am slightly worried about eye floaters that I see in my visual field on an everyday basis. Should I have any additional tests? Can the floaters disqualify me from the procedure?
Emilia

Doctor’s answer
First and foremost, what needs to be assessed is for instance the frequency of the floaters’ occurrence, the type of floaters you see, the circumstances in which the symptoms intensify, and their impact on your everyday life.

An insignificant number of floaters may appear in everyone for various reasons and they do not necessarily be a contraindication to the procedure. Any extension of diagnostics in this direction may be performed during the preliminary qualifying examination (e.g. OCT examination) or in a place indicated by the doctor.

Leave from work after laser vision correction — for what period?

How long should you refrain from physical work after the laser vision correction surgery (dust, weights)? Do you issue a sick leave certificate or will I have to contact my family doctor?
Sara

Doctor’s answer
Harmful factors such as dust, smoke and lifting heavy weights should be avoided for at least 30 days after the laser vision correction procedure. This is the time required for the cornea to heal properly.

The ophthalmic surgeon who conducts the qualifying examination and performs the procedure can issue a sick leave certificate. The exact length of the period of incapacity for work should be established at the last stage of the qualification, once the correction method has already been selected.

Laser vision correction — potential contraindications and return to everyday routine

I am considering having a laser vision correction procedure in your clinic; however, I have a few comments and questions. I see clearly in my glasses, but at a distance of about 4 metres I see a bit worse. Additionally, I have very sensitive eyes, and I cannot wear contact lenses, even an optometrist could not put them into my eyes. Are these issues contraindications to the surgery? What I care most about is a method that will allow me to return to my daily activities the following day.
Karolina

Doctor’s answer
The laser vision correction procedure is preceded by a thorough qualifying examination, during which an ophthalmic surgeon takes all the necessary measurements and the patient’s medical history.

First of all, what needs to be assessed is the reason for your impaired vision in glasses – whether it is caused by the progression of the refractive error or by amblyopia. If the vision defect continues to deteriorate, the procedure will have to be postponed until it stabilises. Typically, the ophthalmic surgeon schedules a re-examination in 6-12 months.

The inability to apply contact lenses is not a contraindication to the laser vision correction surgery. During the procedure, a speculum is used to prevent the eyelids from closing. The tendency to tighten your eyes will be taken into account when selecting the most suitable treatment method.

Directly after the laser vision correction procedure, the patient no longer requires corrective lenses, but the vision will be slightly blurred. This condition may last from several hours to several days, depending on the correction method. However, regardless of the method used for the procedure, some of the postoperative recommendations need to be followed for up to 30 days,e.g. the patient should avoid intense physical effort, lifting heavy objects, staying in smoky or dusty environments, bathing/swimming and going to a sauna.

The ophthalmic surgeon bases the selection of the correction method primarily on medical considerations.

Anaesthesia used for upper eyelid surgery

Do you perform the upper eyelid surgery under general anaesthesia?
Wioleta

Doctor’s answer
The upper eyelid surgery lasts approximately 1 hour and is performed under local anaesthesia in the form of an injection. The whole procedure is too short for general anaesthesia to be applied, thus excessively burdening the body. The patient is discharged home on the same day.

Is an additional qualifying examination necessary in the case of astigmatism?

During routine occupational health examinations, an ophthalmologist diagnosed me with astigmatism and recommended correction with glasses. So far, I have been wearing glasses to correct myopia, and now I have to replace the lenses with cylindrical ones. I was planning a laser vision correction surgery, but am I eligible for the procedure? Do I need to undergo additional tests due to diagnosed astigmatism to check whether I qualify for laser vision correction?
Krzysztof

Doctor’s answer
The laser vision correction procedure corrects vision defects – short-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism and a combination of those.

It is always preceded by a qualifying examination during which a number of parameters are checked, such as the severity of the refractive error, corneal thickness, shape and curvature, and the general condition of the eyes.

If you have not worn cylindrical lenses before, and your astigmatism is considerably severe, an ophthalmic surgeon may recommend wearing glasses/contact lenses that correct astigmatism which will allow for vision adaptation before the laser vision correction procedure. The adaptation time lasts 2-4 weeks depending on the severity of the refractive error.

Amblyopia and laser vision correction

Hello, I have astigmatism, my left eye can barely see, it is practically excluded and it runs away. I have a vision defect in my right eye. Can vision be corrected only in the right eye?
Adam

Doctor’s answer
If one eye is amblyopic and there is no prognosis to improve its vision, the second, “healthy” eye is usually not operated on.

It is necessary to conduct a full qualifying examination to establish the reason for the poor vision and the eye going away, as well as to check whether the eye responds to any correction and to what degree.

Is a sick leave necessary after the laser vision correction procedure?

Will I need to get a sick leave after the laser vision correction surgery? When will I be able to return to work?
Katarzyna

Doctor’s answer
The time when you can return to work depends mostly on what your daily responsibilities involve.

In the case of office work, the sick leave is approximately 1-2 weeks, and if you do hard physical work, it may be prolonged even up to 30 days. It results from the fact that after the laser vision correction procedure you should avoid factors such as excessive physical effort, lifting heavy weights, dusty or smokey environments for up to a month, which is the time needed for the healing process in the cornea to be completed.

The ZUS ZLA sick leave or medical certificate is issued by the operating surgeon during the qualifying examination if the patient declares their willingness to receive it.

Restrictions after laser vision correction — how long do they need to be observed?

It has been a month after the procedure and I am wondering if I still need to adhere to any postoperative restrictions. I would especially like to know if I can have laser hair removal and permanent make-up, donate blood and return to physical activities, such as swimming in a pool, jogging and doing yoga. Do I have to refrain from any of the above or are there no restrictions to observe at this stage? I had the TransPRK surgery.
Monika

Doctor’s answer
Laser hair removal and blood donation have nothing to do with laser vision correction and can be performed regardless of whether you have recently undergone the surgery.

Swimming in a pool and any extensive physical activity are not allowed earlier than 30 days after the procedure. Mild jogging can be resumed approximately 14 days after the TransPRK surgery.

In the case of permanent makeup it is best to wait 1-2 months longer and then have a follow-up visit with the attending ophthalmic surgeon before scheduling an appointment with a lingerist. However, if we are talking about permanent makeup of eyebrows and not eyelids, there are no contraindications to performing it a month after the laser vision correction surgery.

Wearing contact lenses before a laser vision correction surgery

Can I wear regular daily contact lenses until 7 days before the laser vision correction procedure?
Piotr

Doctor’s answer
You should stop wearing soft contact lenses at least 7 days before the one-day procedure/laser vision correction surgery. In the case of hard lenses or toric lenses (the cylindrical ones – used for correcting astigmatism), this time is minimum 3 weeks to a month.

During this time you can only wear corrective glasses.

Reimbursement of laser vision correction by a private insurer

In autumn, I am planning to undergo a laser vision correction procedure in your clinic. How long in advance should I make the appointment? How long are the queues for the one-day procedure?
I have private insurance with an extension that covers treatments and surgeries. Will this insurance cover the costs of the procedure?
Małgorzata

Doctor’s answer
An average waiting time for the one-day procedure is 3-4 weeks.

The laser vision correction procedure is not reimbursed anywhere in the world. We provide all services privately and don’t cooperate with any insurer. As for insurance coverage, you need to contact your service provider directly.

Laser corneal scar removal in children

Do you perform laser removal of corneal scars in children? Is it possible to undergo this procedure under general anaesthesia?
Oliwia

Doctor’s answer
All the procedures our clinic offers are performed only on adult patients.

While undergoing the phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK), the patient needs to remain conscious throughout the procedure so as to be able to perform the commands of the operating surgeon. During the procedure, the laser follows the patient’s eye and the patient should look at a particular point, indicated by the surgeon. Before the surgery, the eye is anaesthetised with special eye drops.

Eyelash extensions after laser vision correction

3 weeks ago I had a laser vision correction procedure at your clinic. I’d like to know if there are any contraindications to having eyelash extensions applied? I’m obviously planning to have it done by a professional beautician.
Aleksandra

Doctor’s answer
It is estimated that the healing process in the cornea takes approximately 30 days. We recommend waiting at least 30 days before having the extensions applied. It is also advisable to attend a follow-up examination before the appointment with a beautician so that the ophthalmic surgeon can assess how the healing process is progressing.

Agents used for this type of beauty treatment may cause eye irritation or allergies.

Does light sensitivity and eye irritation mean I have keratoconus?

I’ve recently experienced abnormally increased sensitivity to light and my eyes are frequently red and irritated. I see less clearly in the evening, and when I drive a car after dusk, my vision is slightly blurry. I’ve heard that such symptoms may indicate keratoconus. How can this condition be diagnosed? I’m considering having a laser vision correction surgery (-2.0 dioptres in each eye) and I’d like to know whether I’m eligible for the procedure.
Gosia

Doctor’s answer
The symptoms you describe are not necessarily indicative of the presence of keratoconus. It is advisable to make an appointment with a specialist to undergo an examination and extend the diagnostics, for instance by performing a topography of the cornea.

If you are considering laser vision correction, possible keratoconus will be diagnosed at the qualification stage. Untreated keratoconus is a contraindication to laser vision correction. In such a case, the ophthalmic surgeon may recommend a cross-linking procedure first or in combination with laser vision correction (cross-linking PLUS).

Apart from performing refractive surgeries, each of our ophthalmic surgeons treats keratoconus.

Laser vision correction and planning a pregnancy

What is the recommended time to wait before getting pregnant after a laser vision correction procedure and where does this time come from? Are there any risks of getting pregnant earlier than after the recommended recovery period finishes?
Agnieszka

Doctor’s answer
We recommend undergoing the laser vision correction surgery approximately 6 months after giving birth or terminating breastfeeding, or at least 6 months before the planned pregnancy.

Following the laser vision correction procedure, it may take up to 6 months for the vision to fully stabilise until it reaches the effect predicted at the qualifying examination. Hormone havoc during pregnancy and after labour/during lactation will affect the measurements taken during the examination and the results of the surgery.

You can find more detailed information on this subject in our article ‘Pregnancy and laser vision correction’

Cold and laser vision correction

Can a common cold in the form of a runny nose and a sore throat disqualify me from undergoing a laser vision correction surgery?
Joanna

Doctor’s answer
Any kind of active infection in the body is a temporary contraindication to performing a laser vision correction procedure. In the case of a cold, we recommend waiting approximately 2-3 weeks from the termination of antibiotic treatment or – if no antibiotics were administered – from the moment when the symptoms disappear.

Can a vision defect recur after a laser vision correction procedure?

My vision defect has been stable for about 20 years, remaining at -2.5 dioptres in both eyes. I wear contact lenses every day, but I am slowly leaning towards having the surgery if possible. Is the defect likely to recur after the procedure?
Agata

Doctor’s answer
The laser vision correction treatment is performed once in a lifetime. The condition for obtaining the best possible effect is a carefully performed qualification and a stabilised vision defect – i.e. if the patient has not required replacement of glasses with stronger ones by at least 0.5-1.0 dioptre within the last 12 months, the defect can be considered stable.

During the examination qualifying for the laser vision correction procedure, an ophthalmic surgeon selects the most suitable correction method for the patient. Immediately before the procedure, the data obtained during the examination, including the thickness and shape of the cornea and the value of the refractive error, is entered into the laser. This means that particular correction is performed on the eye, giving a permanent effect.

What is important is that the patient needs to stop wearing contact lenses at least 7 days before the qualifying examination, surgery or one-day procedure.

A visit to a water park after laser vision correction

Can I go to a water park or a swimming pool a week after a laser vision correction surgery?
Barbara

Doctor’s answer
Bathing and swimming in water reservoirs such as a pool, lake or sea is absolutely forbidden for up to 30 days following the laser vision correction procedure.
Water in public tanks contains irritants – chlorine or bacteria. Bathing in such places may result in them getting into the eyes, causing irritation or inflammation, thus disturbing the healing process of the cornea.

What is more, using water park facilities, such as water slides, and sharing confined water space with other people may lead to an eye injury.

Eyelid surgery and laser vision correction — can they both be performed together in one surgery?

Is it possible to undergo an upper eyelid surgery and laser vision correction in one procedure or in quick succession?
Zuzanna

Doctor’s answer
The two surgeries cannot be performed simultaneously.

There should be at least one-month interval between one procedure and the other, but this issue should be consulted with the treating ophthalmic surgeon during the examination qu-alifying for the procedure you choose to undergo first. In our Clinic laser vision correction and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) are performed by different ophthalmic surgeons on different days.

Although the procedures cannot be performed together, there are no contraindications to scheduling an appointment for the examination qualifying to laser vision correction soon after you have had the blepharoplasty procedure.

Nystagmus and laser vision correction

I would really like to have a laser vision correction procedure to correct my refractive error, but I’ve been suffering from nystagmus since I was born. Is it possible to undergo the surgery when I have this condition?
Inga

Doctor’s answer
Nystagmus does not necessarily need to be an absolute contraindication to performing the laser vision correction procedure. First and foremost, whether a patient can be quali-fied for the surgery depends on how severe their nystagmus is. To properly assess this, it is essential to conduct an examination qualifying for laser vision correction.

Laser vision correction after tooth extraction

Is it possible to have a laser vision correction procedure a few (approximately four) days after having a second tooth extracted?
Weronika

Doctor’s answer
We recommend waiting about 2-3 weeks following tooth extraction before undergoing the laser vision correction surgery. If you are taking any antibiotics/ anti-inflammatory medica-tions, this time should be counted from the termination of pharmacological treatment, not from the dental procedure itself.

Is pregnancy a contraindication to laser vision correction?

I have a laser vision correction scheduled for January 2024 and I have recently found out that I am pregnant. Is it a contraindication to the procedure?
Hanna

Doctor’s answer
Pregnancy is a temporary contraindication to the laser vision correction surgery, and therefore there is no point in making an appointment for an examination qualifying for the procedure. The hormonal changes that occur in the woman’s body during pregnancy affect the measurements taken during the examination.

We recommend having the procedure after approximately 3-6 months after labour and termination of breastfeeding.

More information regarding the effect pregnancy has on laser vision correction is available in the article titled ‘Pregnancy and laser vision correction’.

Is it allowed to wear make-up to a qualifying examination?

I know it is not allowed to have any make-up on the day of the one-day procedure or on the day of the surgery alone, but what about a qualifying examination that is scheduled on a different day than the surgery? I return to work straight after the appointment, so the make-up will be necessary for me.
Krystyna

Doctor’s answer
During registration we advise patients to come to the examination without any make-up, especially on the eyes or in the area directly around them. Apart from the hygienic aspects, such as leaving make-up traces on the ophthalmological equipment, what we also need to remember about is that beauty products may cause irritation or allergic reactions of the conjunctiva and/or the eyelids.

Make-up removal performed at the clinic, directly before the examination, is not recommended either – rubbing the eyelids with a cotton pad soaked in make-up remover may lead to eye irritation as well.

Are follow-up appointments after a laser vision correction procedure mandatory?

Is there a schedule of follow-up appointments that I need to attend after a laser vision correction procedure? Are these appointments paid? What if I cannot attend an examination?
Zuzanna

Doctor’s answer
The first follow-up appointment after laser vision correction is included in the total price of the procedure. It is scheduled either a day or a week after the surgery, depending on which correction method has been applied.

In our clinic, we do not use a schedule of compulsory follow-up appointments. Subsequent check-ups are scheduled individually if the attending ophthalmic surgeon considers them necessary.

Regardless of whether the subsequent follow-up appointment has been recommended by the doctor or the patient makes the appointment on their own, these appointments are paid, according to the pricelist. Appointments scheduled up to 6 months after the procedure are charged as the follow-up examinations, but for the ones you attend later than 6 months after the procedure you will pay as for the specialist ophthalmologic examination.

Laser vision correction — how long after the procedure is it possible to drive a car and return to office work?

How soon after the laser vision correction surgery can I work in front of the computer and drive a car?
Barbara

Doctor’s answer
The return to office work is possible approximately a week after the procedure. We recommend you to take a rest for the first 7 days. Depending on the correction method applied, this time may be slightly longer – up to 14 days.

Generally speaking, there are no contraindications to working in front of the computer; however, what needs to be taken into consideration is the fact that the patient may experience eye fatigue or photophobia cause by looking at the computer screen for a long time. It is a natural symptom connected with the healing process within the cornea (up to a month after the procedure).

More information regarding post-operative recommendations is available in our article.

Driving a car after the laser vision correction is not allowed until the patient undergoes the first follow-up examination. It is scheduled either a day (in the case of the SBK LASIK method) or a week (LASEK or TransPRK) after the procedure.. If the vision will not be stable enough, the ophthalmic surgeon may recommend a longer break from driving vehicles – even up to 3 weeks.

Are inflammations in the oral cavity contraindication to a laser vision correction procedure?

If I have canker sores and tartar, can I undergo a laser vision correction surgery? What might happen if I undergo the procedure with those symptoms?
Karolina

Doctor’s answer
Any infections of the body, including the oral cavity, are a temporary contraindication to the laser vision correction procedure. This applies to canker sores, tartar is not a significant factor.

If inflammation occurs, it may affect the recovery process after the surgery. On the day of the procedure, the body must be free from any infections.

Laser vision correction in the case of a mild refractive error

For professional reasons, I need to have a laser vision correction procedure. Is it possible to perform the surgery on the eyes with -0.25 and -0.75 refractive error?
Piotr

Doctor’s answer
The laser operating range starts from -0.25 dioptre.

Theoretically, your refractive error is possible to be corrected with the laser, but it is still necessary for you to undergo a qualifying examination first to verify the values you have provided and check the parameters of your cornea.

Can a history of toxoplasmosis be a contraindication to laser vision correction?

Does having cysts of Toxoplasma gondii in my eyes following the disease that I had in my youth exclude me from the laser vision correction surgery or may increase the risk of complications after the procedure? Is laser vision cor-rection safe when I have such changes in my eyes?
Marta

Doctor’s answer
The laser vision correction surgery in a patient with a history of toxoplasmosis is often possible to perform, yet it carries a higher risk than in a healthy patient.
An important issue that needs to be consulted with an ophthalmic surgeon during the qualifying examination is when you had the last incident of active inflammation and whether there has recently been a recurrence.

How much time after childbirth should I wait before I can undergo the laser vision correction surgery?

I am interested in having the laser vision correction procedure. My eyesight deteriorated after the pregnancy. How much time do I need to wait after childbirth before I can have the surgery? As far as I know, the vision defect may slightly regress now. What correction method do you offer in your clinic?
Anna

Doctor’s answer
The correction methods we use are SBK LASIK, TransPRK and LASEK. Before the procedure, you need to attend a qualifying examination to verify your eligibility for the surgery and check which method will be most suitable for you.
To safely undergo the surgery, you have to wait at least 3 months after the childbirth and at least 3 months from the end of the lactation period. It is connected with the so-called "hormonal havoc” that affects vision fluctuations (exactly as you have mentioned). Any measurements taken during this period could be unreliable.

Is the laser vision correction surgery painful?

Is it painful to undergo the laser vision correction surgery? What kind of anaesthesia is given to the patient? Does the procedure involve cutting the cornea or is it performed entirely with the use of a laser?
Eleonora

Doctor’s answer
The laser vision correction surgery is performed under local anaesthesia in the form of eye drops. The whole procedure is completely painless. During the procedure, the patient will only feel the touch in the eye area and cold caused by the liquids used by the surgeon to rinse the operated area. .
Once the anaesthesia wears off, you may have a feeling of discomfort or pain sensations, depending on the correction method applied. During the qualifying examination, the ophthalmic surgeon selects the most suitable way of preparing the cornea for the procedure - one that involves creating a corneal flap (SBK LASIK) or one that requires the corneal epithelium to be removed (TransPRK or LASEK). The correction of the refractive error itself - i.d. the reshaping of the cornea - is performed entirely with the use of a laser.

Is it possible to have a laser vision correction surgery if the refractive error has progressed by 0.25 dioptres within a year?

During my last ophthalmological examination, the doctor informed me that my refractive error had progres-sed only by 0.25 dioptres (currently -3 i -2.75 dioptres) in comparison to the last year’s results, and that I did not need new glasses. The doctor said I could undergo a laser vision correction surgery now. Am I eligible for the procedure in such a situation?
Marika

Doctor’s answer
The result of the objective refractometer examination (computer eye examination) determines only an approximate optical correction (power of glasses or contact lenses) that can be applied. The result is influenced by many factors, such as the degree of eye hydration, eye fatigue, possible infection of the body or the eyes. If you do not feel that your glasses are weaker despite a change by 0.25 dioptres on the computer prin-tout, it may mean that the refractive error has not increased. The values you are talking about fall within the opening range of the laser – myopia can be corrected up to -14 dioptres. To ultimately determine whether the procedure can be performed or not, you must undergo a qualifying examination. The ophthalmic surgeon will perform all necessary measurements, including the measurement of epithelial and corneal thickness as well as the shape and curvature of the cornea. They will also select the most suitable correction method () for you.

A sick note after a laser vision correction surgery

Can the treating physician provide me with a sick note after the laser vision correction surgery? Would it be possible to have a sick leave due to difficult working conditions, such as night shifts, working in bright artifi-cial light and exposure to chemicals in the air (working in a company that produces food, monitoring the pro-cess of washing and disinfecting the production halls)?
Małgorzata

Doctor’s answer
It is one of the recommendations after the laser vision correction procedure. to avoid dusty, smoky environments. Patients need to adhere to this rule for the first 30 days following the surgery – it is the time needed for the cornea to fully heal.
The ophthalmic surgeon may issue a sick note covering this period or a medical certificate recom-mending a temporary change of position or working mode.

Determining the stability of the refractive error before laser vision correction

Will the current vision defect be verified during the qualification for the laser vision correction procedure? I had an ophthalmological examination a year ago and my defect had progressed a bit since the earlier appo-intment. I am not sure if it is stable or not.
Angelika

Doctor’s answer
Yes, your current refractive error will be checked at the preliminary examination qualifying for the laser vision correction procedure. While selecting the suitable correction and comparing it with the one applied so far, an ophthalmic surgeon can assess the stability of the refractive error. If it has pro-gressed by 0.5-1 dioptre within a year, we consider it to be in the progressing stage. In such a case, the doctor will recommend to schedule another examination in 6-12 months. If the values will not change in the meantime, then it will be possible to perform the laser vision correction surgery.

Aesthetic medicine and laser vision correction

Is a botox treatment of the lion’s wrinkle or hyaluronic acid treatment of the nasolabial fold performed a month before laser vision correction a contraindication to the procedure?
Tatiana

Doctor’s answer
When planning a laser vision correction procedure, it should be borne in mind that aesthetic medicine treatments of the facial area, especially the ones performed around the eyes, should be scheduled at least a month before or a month after the laser vision correction surgery.

Combining laser vision correction with a cross-linking procedure

Does your clinic offer the possibility of combining laser vision correction with a keratoconus treatment?
Karol

Doctor’s answer
Yes, in our clinic we perform laser vision correction combined with a corneal cross-linking (CXL) procedure.

You need to undergo an examination qualifying for laser vision correction, during which an ophthalmic surgeon will assess the possibility of performing the surgery and determine whether there are also indications for inclu-ding the cross-linking treatment in the same procedure. Sometimes, for medical reasons, it is necessary to con-duct each treatment separately within a specific time period.

Thin cornea and laser vision correction of severe refraction errors

I am considering having a laser vision correction surgery in your clinic. However, I had a qualifying examination in a different city less than a month ago. Initially, there were no contraindications to the procedure, but the doctor told me that my refractive error (over -11 dioptres) cannot be corrected to 0 dioptres due to the fact that my cornea is too thin. I would like to know if my current positive qualification results allow me to undergo the laser vision correction procedure in your centre. I do not expect my vision defect to be corrected to 0 dioptres. Even if it can be corrected only to some extent, at least the refractive error will be milder.
Katarzyna

Doctor’s answer
In the case of such severe refractive error and already diagnosed excessively thin cornea, we ask the pa-tients to send us the complete medical documentation from the previous qualifying examination. Then, after familiarising themselves with the documentation, our ophthalmic surgeons can preliminarily assess whether we have a correction method suitable for correcting this kind of refractive error with such corneal parameters.

In order for the surgeon to fully address your situation, it will be necessary to conduct a full qualifying examination, during which they will perform their own measurements, and they potentially su-ggest an alternative form of correction, more suitable in your case.

Upper eyelids surgery — waiting time

I am interested in having an upper and lower eyelids surgery. Do you offer such procedures? On your website I have only found information about the upper eyelids surgery. Could you please tell me when I can have a consultation be-fore the procedure?
Małgorzata

Doctor’s answer
Our clinic only offers the upper eyelids surgery. The waiting time for the qualifying examination is usually about 2-3 weeks. The cost of the qualification for a blepharoplasty is 200 PLN, the price of the bilateral procedure is 4000 PLN or 4500 PLN 4500zł depending on its scope.

Once you have been qualified for the procedure, the average waiting time for the surgery is approximately 2-3 months.

Break from wearing contact lenses and a sick leave

I am planning to undergo a laser vision correction surgery. I wear soft contact lenses on a daily basis. I do not have any glasses. I have heard that about 2 weeks before the procedure I should stop wearing the contacts. Unfortunately, I cannot work remotely from home and I cannot work without the contacts. Is it possible to get a sick note from a doctor for the time before the procedure when I do not wear the contacts?
Natalia

Doctor’s answer
Before the one-day procedure /laser vision correction surgery, the patient needs to stop wearing soft contact lenses at least 7 days before the procedure and hard or toric contact len-ses which correct astigmatism - 4 weeks before the pro-cedure. During this time, they can wear glasses to correct their refractive error.

If the patient needs a sick note, it is issued for the whole convalescence period including the day of the sur-gery itself. However, there is no medical basis for the surgeon to backdate the sick leave to cover the time when the patient wore glasses before the procedure.

Is it allowed to bathe in a lake after the laser vision correction procedure?

I have read in FAQ that it is advised not to bathe in a swimming pool or sea after the laser vision correction procedure. Does it also apply to bathing in a lake?
Jan

Doctor’s answer
It is not allowed to bathe in any natural or artificial water reservoirs, i.e. in a swimming pool, sea or lake, for up to 30 days after the laser vision correction surgery.

In a public tank you are exposed to irritants such as chlorine or bacteria. Bathing in such places may result in these agents getting into the eyes and subsequently causing eye irritation or inflammation, thus impairing the healing process in the cornea after the surgery.

Is it necessary to make an appointment with an ophthalmologist to have the stability of the refractive error verified before the laser vision correction procedure?

I had an appointment with an ophthalmologist about a year ago. Do I need to visit the ophthalmologist again first to check if my refractive error is stable or is it enough to make an appointment for an examination in your clinic?
Małgorzata

Doctor’s answer
There is no need to visit an ophthalmologist prior to the examination in our Centre. The doctor who will conduct the examination will be able to evaluate the stability of the refractive error while choosing the most suitable correction and comparing it to the previous one.

Is it possible to undergo another laser vision correction procedure if I already had one in the past?

Could you tell me if I can make an appointment for a qualifying examination and possibly for a one-day procedure if I already had a laser vision correction surgery about 15-17 years ago (unfortunately, I do not have any medical documentation from that time)?
Magdalena

Doctor’s answer
A previous laser vision correction surgery does not necessarily have to be a contrain-dication to performing the procedure again.

In order to evaluate the possibility of performing another laser vision correction, the patient needs to undergo a full qualifying examination. Most importantly, the thickness of the cornea has to be checked after the previous procedure, and the cause of the vision deterioration needs to be established.

Anaesthesia and laser vision correction

Is it possible to undergo the laser vision correction procedure under general anaesthesia?
Radosław

Doctor’s answer
The laser vision correction surgery is always conducted under local anaesthesia in the form of eye drops. The whole procedure is too short (it takes approximately 15 minutes to perform it on both eyes) for the general anaesthesia to be applied. There is no need to un-necessarily burden the patient’s body.

Moreover, the patient is obliged to follow the surgeon’s orders during the procedure (e.g look in a particular direction or at a particular spot), which is why they have to remain conscious throughout the surgery.

Return to work after laser vision correction

Hello. I am interested in the one-day laser vision correction procedure. I will be passing through Gdansk and I would like to know how much time off I will need to take. When will I be able to return to work after the procedure if my job requires physical labour?
Joanna

Doctor’s answer
We advise you to plan at least a week for your stay in Gdansk, because the first follow-up appointment is scheduled either for the next day or for a week after the procedure, depending on the correction method that you will be qualified for.

Return to physical work is possible 2-4 weeks after the procedure, depending on the working conditions at your workplace. It is absolutely a must to avoid dusty, smoky environments and extreme physical effort (such as lifting heavy ob-jects) for up to 30 days after the laser vision correction surgery.

Is a diagnosed Hashimoto disease, without any pharmacological treatment, a contraindication to undergoing the laser vision correction procedure?

Does a stabilised Hashimoto disease, not requiring the administration of any medications and regularly monitored by an endocrinologist, disqualify me from having the laser vision correction surgery?
Katarzyna

Doctor’s answer
If the levels of thyroid hormones are stabilised and you are under the regular care of a specialist doctor, the disease itself is not necessarily a contraindication to laser vision correction.

However, it is required that during the qualifying examination you provide the ophthalmic surgeon with an appropriate medical certificate from your treating specialist doctor that includes information regarding the type of disease, medications you take and their dosage, and confirmation that your thyroid is in the state of euthyroidism.

Reading glasses after laser vision correction

I wear glasses while driving a car or watching TV. I take them off when I want to read. In another clinic I was informed that I can undergo the laser vision correction surgery but I will still need to wear glasses for reading afterwards.
Marcin

Doctor’s answer
That’s correct. In the future you will need glasses for reading.

After the age of 40 the eyes begin to lose the accommodation ability as a result of the ageing process. It is known as presbyopia. Once it develops, it becomes necessary to wear glasses for close-up work and reading. Vision deterioration at close distances results from a decreased accommodation ability of the eye or the complete lack of thereof.

It is a natural, age-related physiological process, leading to a decrease in the elasticity of the intraocular lens and it affects people with far-sightedness, short-sightedness and astigmatism, as well as those who previously didn’t have any vision defects.
More information on this topic is available in the article on our website.

Laser vision correction of astigmatism

I have astigmatism and I would like to know if I am eligible for the laser vision correction surgery and what the cost of the procedure would be.
Dawid

Doctor’s answer
The laser vision correction surgery can correct astigmatism of up to 6 dioptres. In order to definitively assess whether you qualify for the procedure, a qualifying examination should be carried out, during which the ophthalmic surgeon will for instance take all the necessary measurements of the corneal parameters.

The current cost of the preliminary qualifying examination and the bilateral surgery can be found in the pricelist on our website. If you decide to undergo the surgery in the one-day-procedure mode, the cost of the qualifying examination is deducted from the total cost of the bilateral surgery. The cost includes protective sunglasses, eye shields, to wear at night, eye drops to use during the first month and the first follow-up appointment, which is scheduled a day or a week after the surgery depending on the correction method you will be qualified for.

Eyelid surgery and laser vision correction — which of the two procedures should be performed first?

performed first?
I am interested in undergoing laser vision correction, preferably in a one-day-procedure mode. How long is the waiting time for the appointment? I am also planning to have a surgery of the upper eyelids and I am wonder-ing if the order in which the procedures will be performed matter.
Agnieszka

Doctor’s answer
There should be a break of at least a month between the procedures. The order in which they are performed is not important.

Refractive surgeries and blepharoplasty procedures are performed on different days of the week by different ophthalmic surgeons.

In the case of laser vision correction, you need to make an appointment for the one-day procedure approximately 3-4 weeks in advance.

Increased intraocular pressure and laser vision correction

A few years ago I was diagnosed with elevated pressure in the eyes. Can it be a contraindication to laser vision correction?
Jagoda

Doctor’s answer
Increased intraocular pressure does not necessarily have to be a contraindication to performing a laser vi-sion correction procedure.
Everything depends on what values the examination reveals and on whether they will be within the normal range. If the pressure indeed turns out to be too high, an ophthalmic surgeon will either perform further diagno-stics themselves or refer you for further diagnostics somewhere else so as to exclude eye diseases (e.g. glau-coma) and degenerations which may be a contraindication to the surgery.

Can a laser vision correction be performed more than once?

I had a laser vision correction surgery 4 years ago. Is it possible for me to undergo the procedure again?
Marika

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction is performed once in a lifetime. The refractive error which has been corrected does not return spontaneously.
If you are considering having a new surgery, you should first and foremost undergo a full qualifying examina-tion again, and establish the cause of insufficient visual acuity and examine the parameters of the cornea – most importantly check whether it is thick enough to be corrected with a laser.

How long is the positive qualification for laser vision correction valid for?

If I decide to undergo a laser vision correction surgery in winter 2023, how far in advance should I prepare for the procedure, e.g. have an ophthalmologic examination a few months prior to the surgery to confirm the stability of the refractive error or make other preparations? If I make an appointment for a qualifying examination in your clinic during the summer holidays, will it be a suitable time if I would like to have the surgery in the winter?
Izabela

Doctor’s answer
To undergo a laser vision correction procedure, you do not need to have a separate ophthalmological examination in advance. The surgery is always preceded by a preliminary qualifying examination during which the ophthalmic surgeon will be able to verify whether the refractive error is stable (e.g. by comparing the correction selected at the examination with the one you currently use) and check if there are no other contraindications, e.g in the form of eye diseases or degenerations.

The results of the examination qualifying for laser vision correction are valid for three months. After this time the examination has to be repeated. Additionally, if the surgery is not performed in a one-day-procedure mode, the cost of the qualification will not be deducted from the total cost.

Pituitary microadenoma and laser vision correction.

Is pituitary microadenoma a contraindication to a laser vision correction surgery?
Anna

Doctor’s answer
Pituitary microadenoma does not necessarily disqualify you from the procedure, but you will have to provide pituitary imaging test results at the qualifying examination. Moreover, during the qualification for the laser vision correction procedure it may be necessary to perform additional optical coherence tomography (OCT). It is not included in the preliminary examination qualifying for the laser vision correction procedure, and the fee needs to be paid according to the current pricelist.

Blepharoplasty — is the surgery performed under anaesthesia?

I have been determined to undergo an upper eyelid surgery for a long time now. Therefore, I have a question whether it is possible to conduct the procedure under general anaesthesia.
Danuta

Doctor’s answer
In our Centre, the blepharoplasty surgery is performed in the outpatients mode, under local anaesthesia. The whole procedure takes approximately 1-1,5 hours. General anaesthesia would be an unnecessary burden for the patient. Following the procedure, the patient rests for a while in the clinic and, if they feel well, they may return home. More information on the blepharoplasty procedure is available here.

Return to driving after laser vision correction

I am interested in having a laser vision correction procedure. I would like to find out what the waiting time for an examination qualifying for a bilateral procedure is. I would also like to know whether following the surgery I could return to work the next day or whether I should refrain from work for some time. I am a professional truck driver.
Radosław

Doctor’s answer
We assume that the corneal healing period after a laser vision correction surgery lasts approximately one month. During this time, vision changes/fluctuations may occur and you may experience eye fatigue more quickly. It would therefore be unwise to drive a vehicle until your eyesight stabilises. It is definitely not allowed to drive before the first follow-up examination, which is scheduled a day or a week after the procedure, depending on the selected correction method.

As to your return to work, you can find more information in an article on our website.

The course of the convalescence period largely depends on the correction method selected for the procedure, and the choice of the method is determined by the measurements taken during the qualifying examination. Once the method has been chosen, it will be easier for you to plan the convalescence period. If necessary, the doctor will provide you with an appropriate ZUS ZLA sick leave certificate.

How long after the lens power has been changed can I consider having a laser vision correction procedure?

Is the period of 7 months from the last change in the value of the lenses sufficient to make an appointment for an examination qualifying for a laser vision correction surgery?
Jacek

Doctor’s answer
During the preliminary qualifying examination, an ophthalmic surgeon usually verifies the last 12 months in terms of the stability of the vision defect as it is normally assumed that the defect is stable if the patient did not need to have the power of contact lenses or glasses increased for the last year.

Preventive treatment during laser vision correction

Are any sedatives administered before the laser vision correction procedure? If not, are there any contraindications to patient taking some medications on their own?
Kamila

Doctor’s answer
During the preparation phase, before the patient enters the treatment room, a nurse administers sedatives and painkillers orally, in accordance with the doctor’s guidelines.

It is not recommended for patients to take any medications on their own, unless they require some special premedication and have informed the ophthalmic surgeon in advance.

Isotretinoin therapy and laser vision correction

I had a laser vision correction a month ago. I have skin problems so my dermatologist recommended me to undergo an isotretinoin therapy. Can I start the treatment now if I still have to lubricate my eyes with artificial tears after the surgery?
Karina

Doctor’s answer
If an isotretinoin therapy is necessary, you should wait at least 3 months after the laser vision correction procedure before you start the treatment. Isotretinoin administration results in excessive dryness of the mucous membranes, skin and of course eyes, which could hinder corneal regeneration following a laser vision correction surgery.

Tooth inflammation and laser vision correction

If I have tooth inflammation but I do not feel any pain, does it disqualify me from a laser vision correction procedure?
Janek

Doctor’s answer
If you do not feel any pain, but you have a diagnosed inflammation, it is a temporary contraindication to a laser vision correction procedure. On the day of the surgery the patient's body should be free from any infections and inflammations, including the ones in the mouth and oral cavity. You should first go to the dentist and after the treatment of your inflamed tooth is completed, you can consider having a laser vision correction procedure.

Can an ophthalmologist who does not specialise in refractive surgeries properly assess my eligibility for a laser vision correction procedure?

I would like to know whether an ordinary ophthalmologist (without specialisation in laser corrections) can decide after an appropriate examination whether a given patient qualifies for laser correction?
Aleksandra

Doctor’s answer
Ophthalmologists who perform laser vision correction procedures are also qualified microsurgeons. They constantly train and have extensive knowledge in the field of refractive surgery, which is not possessed by ophthalmologists who are not surgeons and who only deal with eye examination, selection of glasses and treatment of eye diseases.
What is more, during a qualifying examination a number of tests are conducted and measurements are taken using a specialist equipment which an ordinary ophthalmologist does not need to have in their office - e.g. a device called Oculyzer, which is used to take the measurements of the anterior segment of the eye, including the topography (map) of the cornea.
To initially exclude potential contraindications and check whether your refractive error qualifies for the laser vision correction procedure, we need you to submit a filled-in online preliminary qualification form.

Reading glasses after laser vision correction

09.12.2022: Reading glasses after laser vision correction.
Is it safe to correct mild refractive errors, i.e. -1.5 dioptres and astigmatism? Will it be necessary after a laser vision correction procedure to wear glasses for close-range vision in the future (over the age of 40)?
Katarzyna

Doctor’s answer
Using a laser, it is possible to correct such refractive errors as short-sightedness from -0.5D to -14D, astigmatism from 0.5D to 6D as well as a combination of these defects. To assess whether it will be safe to perform the procedure and whether there are no contraindications, you need to undergo a preliminary qualifying examination.
After the age of 40-45, everyone will need reading glasses and it is not related to a previously performed laser vision correction surgery. It is a progressive physiological process resulting from the ageing of the body, caused by a decrease in elasticity of the intraocular lens.
It affects both those with far-sightedness, short-sightedness or astigmatism and those who do not have any vision defects. More information regarding this subject is available in an article on our website: “What is presbyopia?”.

Laser correction of mild refractive error

I have a refractive error of about -1.75 dioptres in both eyes. I am 34 years old and the error progresses by approximately 0.25 dioptres every few years.
I am considering a laser vision correction procedure, but I have heard opinions that this solution is perfect to correct severe vision defects and in the case of milder refractive errors it may for instance correct an error of -2 dioptres to -1 dioptre and it may still be necessary to wear glasses.
Łukasz

Doctor’s answer
Whether laser vision correction will turn out to be a good solution for a given patient depends not only on the value of the refractive error, but also on whether using contact lenses or glasses is uncomfortable and hinders the patient’s everyday functioning in any way.

The value of 0.25 dioptres is considered to be the “margin of error” because the result of the computer examination depends on many factors, such as the patient’s general condition and eye hydration. If the refractive error deepens by 0.5-1.0 dioptre per year, it is regarded as error progression. In such a case, a laser vision correction procedure will not bring permanent results. More information on this subject is available in an article on our website: https://www.artlife.com.pl/posts/is-the-effect-of-laser-vision-correction-permanent-1148.php.

Is laser vision correction covered by a warranty?

Is the procedure covered by a warranty? I have noticed that other websites offer a warranty. e.g. for 5 years.
Magdalena

Doctor’s answer
In accordance with the regulations in force in Poland, the responsibility for treatment is based on the principle of due diligence, both during the diagnostic process and the treatment itself. The doctor and the medical entity where the procedure is performed are not entitled to guarantee the achievement of a particular treatment result.

More information is available in our article "Is laser vision correction covered by a warranty?”

Is a past laser vision correction surgery an indication for a caesarean section instead of a natural labour?

Are there indications for a delivery by caesarean section after a past laser vision correction procedure that I had over a year ago (-1.0 and -5.0 dioptres)?
Tatjana

Doctor’s answer
A past laser vision correction procedure is not a contraindication to a natural labour. However, it is essential to evaluate the condition of the retina prior to labour as vision defects (especially more severe ones) may be related to retinal impairment. Laser vision correction consists in reshaping the surface of the cornea. This means that the condition of the retina does not change following the procedure.

Before labour, you should make an appointment for a specialist ophthalmological examination. During the examination, you should discuss potential indications for the caesarean section with the doctor.

Nystagmus and laser vision correction

Is it possible to undergo a laser vision correction procedure to improve my vision and stop wearing glasses if I have congenital nystagmus?
Tomasz

Doctor’s answer
Nystagmus may be a contraindication to a laser vision correction procedure, but it depends on its stage. In order to check how advanced your nystagmus is, to assess your eligibility for the surgery and choose the most suitable correction method, you need to make an appointment for a preliminary examination qualifying for laser vision correction.

Child care after a laser vision correction procedure

Do you think it would be possible for me to take care of a 1.5-year-old child after a laser vision correction without exposing myself to the problems of the newly operated eyes? If I had to lift a child who weighs 12 kg and if the baby accidentally touched my eyes, would it grossly affect their condition after the surgery?
Agnieszka

Doctor’s answer
Regardless of the correction method, the corneal healing process takes up to a month, and during the first week after the procedure, it is forbidden to rub the eyes, even through closed eyelids.
Lifting heavy weights (e.g. while working out in the gym) should be limited during the first month after the surgery, yet this period may be shortened to 14 days depending on the correction method applied.

Patients should avoid eye injuries (especially while the cornea is still healing), such as hitting an eye with a hand, principally following an SBK LASIK surgery as there is a risk of flap displacement in the first days after the procedure.

Working on a computer after a laser vision correction procedure

How long after the procedure do I have to refrain from working in front of a computer screen? I normally work on a computer eight hours per day. Will I receive sick leave after the surgery?
Alina

Doctor’s answer
Depending on the correction method applied during the procedure, the recommended break from working on a computer is 3-10 days. If required, the ophthalmic surgeon who has performed the procedure will provide you with a sick note covering the indicated time.

We recommend spending at least one week to regenerate your eyes and rest.
Following a laser vision correction procedure, patients may experience fatigue while looking at the screen faster than before. This effect may persist for up to a month (standard corneal healing period).

Does the type of refractive error affect the price of the procedure?

How much does the cost of laser vision correction increase if you want to have short-sightedness corrected together with astigmatism? Does mild eye dryness (more frequent blinking during the day) disqualify me from the procedure? If so, will I be permanently disqualified or can I undergo the surgery once the symptoms have been alleviated?
Nina

Doctor’s answer
The price given in the pricelist, is the cost of the procedure performed on one eye, using a particular correction method. Laser vision correction corrects refractive errors such as short-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism, and any combination of the above. There is no direct correlation between the severity or the type of error and the pricelist.

To assess your eligibility for the procedure and choose the most suitable correction method, the parameters of your cornea, including its shape and thickness, need to be checked. The cost of the preliminary qualifying examination is 300PLN, and the cost of the bilateral surgery (on both eyes) does not exceed 7000PLN. In the case of a one-day-procedure mode, the cost of the qualifying examination is deducted from the total cost of the bilateral procedure.

Advanced dry eye syndrome (DES) is a contraindication to the procedure.
Mild, sporadic eye dryness, e.g. caused by working on a computer or wearing contact lenses, does not constitute a problem. More information regarding DES is available in our article . During the qualifying examination, a doctor will verify whether you have dry eye syndrome and how serious it is.

Correction of vision defects after the age of 40

I have a refractive error of -2.75 dioptres (distant vision) and 1.75 dioptres (close-range vision). Is it possible to fully correct my vision defect so that I no longer have to wear glasses at all?
Robert

Doctor’s answer
After the age of 40 everyone begins to experience an age-related loss of accommodation ability –so-called presbyopia. It results in the necessity to use glasses for close-up work or reading.

Close-range vision deterioration results from a decreased eye accommodation ability or lack thereof. It is a progressive physiological process caused by the ageing of the body, leading to a decrease in intraocular lens elasticity. Presbyopia affects everyone, regardless of whether they are short-sighted, far-sighted, or astigmatic, or whether they do not have any vision defect at all.

This means that even after your refractive error is corrected, you will still need to wear glasses, but only for reading or close-up work.

Mixed astigmatism and laser vision correction

I would like to ask if mixed astigmatism can be corrected with a laser.
My refractive error is +2.0 spherical dioptres and -1.75 cylindrical dioptres in the left eye, and +3.0 spherical dioptres and -1.75 cylindrical dioptres in the right eye.
Kacper

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction allows for the correction of short-sightedness up to-14.0 dioptres, far-sightedness up to +6.0 dioptres and astigmatism up to 6.0 dioptres, as well as a combination of the above errors.

The values of your refractive error fall within the range of dioptres possible to be corrected with a laser; however, to be qualified for the surgery, you also need to meet other essential criteria, such as an appropriate thickness and shape of the cornea. All necessary parameters are verified during the preliminary qualifying examination.

Chalazion removal

Is it possible to schedule a consultation and a chalazion removal procedure for the same day? I will be just passing through in Gdańsk.
Paweł

Doctor’s answer
Every minor eye treatment is preceded by a qualifying examination. If the ophthalmic surgeon decides during the examination that pharmacological treatment will not be effective and it is necessary to remove the chalazion, a surgical procedure is scheduled.

In the case of a chalazion, the waiting time is slightly shorter (up to a month counting from the qualifying examination) than in the case of more serious surgeries, such as blepharoplasty.

The chalazion removal procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. Depending on the lesion’s size, it may be necessary to apply stitches. The stitches are then removed by the surgeon during the first follow-up appointment (a week after the procedure). The patient leaves the clinic directly after the surgery, wearing a dressing on the eye. It is not allowed to drive a vehicle on the day of the surgery.

Breastfeeding and laser vision correction

I am interested in undergoing a laser vision correction surgery, but I have a couple of questions connected with the procedure:
Is breastfeeding a contraindication to the surgery?
I have read the information that it is necessary to wear special eye shields for the first 7 nights after the procedure – would it be a problem if I get up a few times at night (due to taking care of a small baby)?
Paulina

Doctor’s answer
Lactation constitutes a temporary contraindication to undergoing a laser vision correction.
The surgery cannot be scheduled earlier than at least 3 months after the termination of breastfeeding. The hormonal balance has to be restored before you can undergo the procedure as it will affect the test results obtained during the qualifying examination and hence also the results of the surgery itself.

It is recommended that the patient sleeps in the eye shields to make sure the eyes are not accidentally rubbed against a pillow or that the patient does not unconsciously hit themselves on the eye with their hand. If you need to get up at night, you would have to take the shields off every time you get up and put them back on when you return to bed. The shields are transparent so you could see through them, but the question remains if the baby would not get scared when seeing you wearing them on your eyes

We encourage you to make an appointment for the qualifying examination once you finish breastfeeding.
It will be best if you submit a filled-in preliminary qualification form online.

The convalescence period after laser vision correction

After what time is it possible to return to work following a laser vision correction procedure (office work in front of a computer)? I am asking about an approximate estimation as I realise it is a very individual matter, but I would like to know whether it is usually a week, a month or half a year? I would be very grateful for your reply.
Natalia

Doctor’s answer
The patient may return to work approximately a week after the procedure. We recommend taking a rest for the first 7 days following the surgery. This time may be slightly longer in some cases, depending on the correction method applied.

Generally speaking, there are no contraindications to working in front of a computer screen, but a break from work is recommended as the patient may initially experience eye fatigue and photophobia while working on the computer. It is a normal symptom related to the healing process in the cornea (up to a month after the procedure).

More information regarding post-operative recommendations are available in the article.

Laser vision correction and Lyme disease

Does Lyme disease exclude me from a laser vision correction surgery?
Iwona

Doctor’s answer
Lyme disease is not an absolute contraindication to undergoing a laser vision correction procedure; however, its acute phase (or inflammation in the eye) may cause the surgery to be postponed for some time.

To be qualified for the one-day procedure, it will be necessary to a certificate from the attending physician attesting to the lack of inflammation in the body caused by Lyme disease and to the lack of contraindications to performing the correction surgery. Patients are also asked to bring their treatment history with them to the qualifying examination.

Can age be a contraindication to laser vision correction?

What is the upper age limit for laser vision correction?
Justyna

Doctor’s answer
The age itself is not a decisive factor in determining the result of the preliminary qualification. If you are over 40-45 years of age, you probably have so-called presbyopia. It means that after a laser vision correction procedure you will still need to use reading glasses. It is a natural, progressing physiological process, totally unrelated to laser vision correction.

The surgery corrects refractive errors such as short-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism. If you wear glasses only for reading and the need for glasses appeared with age, it is not possible to correct it with a laser.

Return to training after laser vision correction

I had a LASEK procedure two weeks ago. I would like to ask whether I am allowed to do physical exercises such as crunches and push-ups that require using only the weight of your own body and not any additional weights.
Marek

Doctor’s answer
Following a laser vision correction procedure performed with the use of a surface method such as LASEK, patients can resume mild physical exercises approximately two weeks after the surgery, on the condition that the convalescence period is going well and the doctor has not recommended otherwise. Regardless of the method, you can return to strength training with a higher load after a break of about a month.

You can find more information on how to return to physical activity following a laser vision correction surgery in our article.

Implanted cardioverter and laser vision correction

I have an implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). Does it constitute a contraindication to a laser vision correction surgery?
Marzena

Doctor’s answer
An implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is not a contraindication to performing a laser vision correction procedure. However, for the qualifying examination, you will have to provide a medical certificate () from your cardiologist attesting to the lack of contraindications to the surgery.

Laser vision correction and corneal thickness

I have a refractive error of -3 dioptres in my left eye and my corneal thickness is approximately 487 microns. Does it disqualify me from laser vision correction?
Maciej

Doctor’s answer
Corneal thickness plays a certain role in the qualification for the procedure, but it is not the only decisive factor. What is also important is the value of the refractive error. According to the preliminary estimate, it is possible to carry out the correction with the parameters mentioned above.

Our ophthalmic surgeons have to take precise measurements themselves to accurately assess your eligibility for the surgery, which is why you need to make an appointment for a preliminary qualifying examination in our clinic first. Patients with a thinner cornea, for whom an SBK LASIK procedure is not recommended, can be qualified for a surface method: LASEK or TransPRK (StreamLight).

Age-related vision deterioration

Is laser vision correction possible at my age? I have never had any congenital or acquired vision defect, but my eyesight has deteriorated with age and now I need glasses for reading. I also have astigmatism.
Iwona

Doctor’s answer
The age itself is not a contraindication to a laser vision correction surgery. What is important is the general health condition of the body and the eyes. If you use glasses only for reading, due to age-related vision deterioration (after the age of 40-45), and you do not have a vision defect, laser vision correction is not possible. The need for using reading glasses is connected with so-called presbyopia. It is a natural, progressive physiological process, resulting from a decrease in the elasticity of the intraocular lens.

Laser vision correction is performed on the surface of the cornea and allows to correct refractive errors, such as short-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism. If the qualifying examination confirms that you need a laser vision correction procedure (e.g. to correct astigmatism you have mentioned), then it can be taken into consideration to counteract the effect of presbyopia with a laser, by using the so-called monovision. However, you should be aware that the procedure does not permanently eliminate the need to use reading glasses and that you will still need them in the future.

Taking medications and laser vision correction

Does taking corticosteroids (I take 4mg of Meprelone daily due to systemic lupus) disqualify me from laser correction of short-sightedness? I have a refraction error of -2.5 dioptres.
Katarzyna

Doctor’s answer
Lupus, if stabilised, does not necessarily constitute a contraindication to a laser vision correction procedure. At the qualifying examination, you should provide the doctor with all the documentation regarding the treatment and the current stage of the disease.

Laser vision correction and anaesthesia

I would like to make an appointment for a laser vision correction in a one-day-procedure mode.
However, I have a question whether I can have the procedure under anaesthesia. I am an anxious person, and it would help me to get medication that would prevent me from panicking.
Edyta

Doctor’s answer
There is no need to burden the body with general anaesthesia. The laser vision correction procedure is performed under local anaesthesia (anaesthetic eye drops) and it lasts only a few minutes of which the laser works for only a few seconds.
The patient is obliged to follow the surgeon’s orders and therefore must remain fully conscious.

Waiting time for the surgery and the return to work

I would like to know whether I could make an appointment for an examination before a laser vision correction surgery. How long would I have to wait for the examination? I am also wondering when would I be able to return to my responsibilities at work after the surgery. I do physical work in a dusty environment. My last question is how long I would have to wait for the surgery.
Wiktoria

Doctor’s answer
We suggest a one-day procedure – the qualifying examination and the surgery on the same day. If you would like to spread the examination and the surgery over time, you should bear in mind that the examination results are valid for 3 months. After you are positively qualified for the surgery, we can schedule the procedure practically from week to week, with the same ophthalmic surgeon who has conducted the preliminary examination.

The return to work always depend on the character of the job you have. If it requires physical effort, in a dusty environment – you should avoid such factors for approximately a month after the surgery. Heavy lifting is also not recommended for up to a month after the procedure. It applies to bathing in the sea, lake or swimming pool, and using a sauna as well. More information on the post-operative recommendations are available in the article on our website. The waiting time in our clinic is approximately 3 weeks.

Vision defect and dry eye syndrome

I have a vision defect (+1 - +1.5) and I have been suffering from the dry eye syndrome for some time. I am interested in treating both or at least one of the above problems.
Bartosz

Doctor’s answer
We correct far-sightedness of up to +6 dioptres, so the value of your refractive error is within the range of dioptres possible to correct with a laser. However, it is necessary to undergo a preliminary qualifying examination, during which an ophthalmic surgeon will verify the possibility of performing the procedure and will choose the most suitable correction method on the basis of your test results.
Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is characterised by a permanent feeling of dry eyes, sand under the eyelids, and sometimes even their swelling. This ailment is easy to confuse with ordinary fatigue, so it is important that the patient consults an ophthalmologist. If DES has been diagnosed, its advanced stage may constitute a contraindication to performing a laser vision correction surgery as it hinders the recovery.

The job of a flight attendant and laser vision correction

I live abroad and I work as a flight attendant. Do you issue a sick leave note? How long after a laser vision correction surgery am I not allowed to fly? Is it necessary to undergo the examination in your clinic earlier or is it possible to have the examination and the procedure on the same day?
Miriam

Doctor’s answer
Our clinic offers the qualifying examination and the laser vision correction surgery on the same day – a one-day procedure. However, you have to remember that a follow-up appointment is always scheduled a day or a week after the surgery, depending on the correction method, which will be chosen as the most suitable in your case.
We issue a sick leave note if it is required – if you need one, you should mention it during the qualifying examination. A doctor can issue the note once for up to 30 days.
Air travel is allowed 3-4 days after the surgery in case of short distances, such as Poland-UK. If the flight is longer, the time that you should refrain from flying also becomes longer – even up to 7 days. The final decision is taken by the doctor during the follow-up appointment.

Laser vision correction and contraception

On registration, I was informed that I should bring a hormone stabilisation certificate with me. I made an appointment with a gynaecologist, who said he did not know what the document was. What should such a certificate look like? Additionally, the doctor said that taking oral hormonal/ contraceptive 2-component drugs (Atywia) is a contraindication to undergoing a laser vision correction procedure. Is it true?
Alicja

Doctor’s answer
The certificate should contain information about the medications you take and their dosage. It should also confirm that your hormone levels are stable (for instance, in the case of thyroid hormones it can be seen in the test results), or how long you have been taking the medication (such information is enough in the case of contraceptives).
Hormonal contraception is not a contraindication to laser vision correction as long as it is taken continuously for at least 3 months. If you recently started a hormonal treatment, you would have to wait about 3 months for your hormonal balance to be restored.
Depending on how the healing process is going, the contraceptives should be taken for at least 3-6 months following the surgery. Sudden withdrawal of medications could result in so-called „hormonal havoc” and negatively affect your visual acuity and its stabilisation.

Chronic disease — medical certificate

Does a medical certificate attesting to the stabilisation of thyroid hormones have to be issued by an endocrinologist or is it enough to provide a certificate from a family physician?
Weronika

Doctor’s answer
If the patient suffers from a chronic disease and permanently takes medications, it is necessary during the qualifying examination to provide a certificate from the doctor who prescribes the medications. The certificate should include information regarding the name and dosage of the medications, as well as a confirmation that the disease is stable. The document can be issued by a family physician, provided that this is the doctor who monitors the patient’s health condition on a regular basis and prescribes the medications for the chronic disease.

Botox and blepharoplasty

I get facial Botox twice a year and I am planning to undergo an eyelid surgery soon. Should I postpone the next Botox injections until after the procedure?
Ewa

Doctor’s answer
Botox fillers around the eyes are a temporary contraindication to performing a blepharoplasty surgery. Botox distorts natural facial features and affects muscle tone, which makes it impossible for an ophthalmic surgeon to precisely assess how much skin tissue will have to be removed. The blepharoplasty surgery can be performed after the effect of Botox injections wears off (approximately 5 months).

Vision improvement and return to work after a laser vision correction procedure

I am considering having a laser vision correction surgery. I wear glasses with an optical strength of -5.5 dioptres on both eyes. Could you tell me what the side effects of the procedure may be and whether as a result of any complications during the procedure it may happen that I will lose my vision or that I will see worse than before? How soon after the procedure does the vision actually improve and when will I be able to return to work?
Karolina

Doctor’s answer
A laser vision correction surgery is always preceded by a thorough qualifying examination during which a doctor verifies the possibility of performing the procedure and chooses the most suitable correction method. The examination also allows the doctor to rule out contraindications and potential complications – if there was any risk of complications, you would not even be qualified for the procedure.
The surgery is performed on the surface of the cornea and does not affect the inside of the eye or the optic nerves, hence there is no possibility of vision loss as a consequence of the procedure. Vision improvement is usually immediate and directly after the surgery the patient does not need to wear corrective glasses anymore. However, it may take from a few weeks up to six months before vision fully stabilises and the expected result is obtained, the length of the stabilisation period depending on how severe the corrected vision defect was and to what extent the patient follows the post-operative guidelines provided by the doctor.
As far as returning to work after the surgery is concerned, how soon you can resume your duties is determined by such factors as the applied correction method and the character of your work.
You are not allowed to stay in dusty environments or lift any heavy weights for approximately a month after the surgery. If you work in front of a computer screen, depending on the correction method applied, you may experience oversensitivity to light emitted by the screen. It is recommended to refrain from working on the computer for about a week after the procedure to enhance corneal regeneration.

Eyelash extensions following a laser vision correction surgery

I am writing to ask whether there are no contraindications to performing eyelash extensions/thickening after laser vision correction. I had the procedure in January 2022.
Emilia

Doctor’s answer
Eyelash extensions/thickening can be performed a month after a laser vision correction surgery, so in your case the required period of time has already passed.

Examination results and qualification for laser vision correction

I would like to know whether I could start considering a laser vision correction procedure if my recent examination results have been as follows:
Feb 2022: -5.25 and -5.5
Aug 2021: -5.0 and -5.5
Jul 2020: -5.0 and -5.25
Apr 2019: -4.75 and -5.0
Dec 2015: -4.25 and -4.5
May 2014: -4.25 and -4.5
Ola

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction can be performed only when the refractive error is stable, which means it has to remain stable, without progressing, for at least a year before the surgery. We are talking about a range of about 0.5-1D. The examination results you have presented demonstrate that the defect does not change (0.25D is considered the limit of error).
A refractive error of -5.25 and -5.5 fits within the operating range of a laser and hence qualifies for correction. However, to finally assess the possibility of performing the procedure the patient has to undergo a preliminary qualifying examination, during which a doctor checks other eye parameters, such as corneal thickness.

Scheduling an appointment and air travel after the procedure

Is it necessary to make an appointment for a qualifying examination in advance to have the surgery on the same day as the examination?
Can I travel by plane after the surgery?
Is it possible to have a laser vision correction procedure at the age of 43?
Krzysztof

Doctor’s answer
An appointment for the preliminary qualifying examination/ one-day procedure has to be made in advance. The waiting time is approximately 3 weeks.
Air travel is allowed 3-4 days after the surgery as long as the distance is short (up to 3 hours). While planning the return flight, however, it is important to remember that the first compulsory follow-up appointment is scheduled either a day or a week after the procedure, depending on the correction method chosen for by the doctor.
Although the age itself is not a contraindication to undergoing a laser vision correction procedure, you have to remember that presbyopia begins to develop after the age of 40-45. It is a progressive physiological process that cannot be corrected with a laser.
This means that after your refractive error (short-sightedness, far-sightedness, or astigmatism) has been surgically corrected, you will still need glasses for reading, e.g. a newspaper or a text on your phone. More information is available in our article about presbyopia.

Organisation of time on the day of the laser vision correction procedure

I am not sure how I will feel after the surgery and that is why I would like to ask if I should be accompanied to the clinic by someone who will help me return to the hotel after the procedure.
Do you perform correction surgeries also at weekends? What is the waiting time for the procedure
Emilia

Doctor’s answer
The ArtLife Ophthalmologic Centre is open from Monday to Friday. One-day procedures  / laser vision correction surgeries are usually performed on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Preliminary qualifying examinations are conducted in the mornings and the surgeries performed are in the afternoons.
Following a laser vision correction surgery your vision will immediately improve and you will no longer need to wear glasses or contact lenses. This means that you can return to the hotel on your own, e.g. by taxi, but it is better to be accompanied by someone anyway, even simply for greater comfort. The waiting time for a one-day procedure is approximately 2-3 weeks.

Eyelid surgery — cost and waiting time

I would like to have my droopy eyelids operated on. I am interested in the cost of the surgery and the possible time of the procedure.
Bożena

Doctor’s answer
An eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is preceded by a qualifying examination (cost 200 PLN), during which an ophthalmic surgeon assesses the patient’s eligibility and decides on the scope of the procedure. Registration is conducted approximately 2-3 weeks in advance.
Blepharoplasty of the upper eyelids costs between 3600 PLN to 4100 PLN for both eyes. The price depends on the scope of the surgery – basic or extended one (with additional removal of fatty hernias). The dates of blepharoplasty are set after qualification and from that moment the waiting time is about 2-3 months.

Laser vision correction — return to everyday routine after the procedure

How soon after a possible surgery is it possible to return to work (working in front of a computer screen + occasional lifting of some weights + exposure to disinfectants). After the surgery, are there any limitations regarding practising sports (e.g. martial arts, diving)?
Jakub

Doctor’s answer
As far as post-operative recommendations immediately after a laser vision correction procedure are concerned, for the first month, it is advised to avoid dusty environments, lifting heavy weights, swimming in a pool or sea and using a sauna. More detailed information regarding return to practising sports is available in our article ()
Depending on the correction method, the patient may initially be oversensitive to light, including the one emitted by a computer screen. This is why it is recommended to refrain from working on a computer for approximately a week after the procedure so as to allow for better eye regeneration.

Is it possible to fully correct a refractive error?

I suffer from myopia and I wear -2.0 and -2.25 glasses (no cylinders) permanently, throughout the day. I have contraindications to using contact lenses due to dry eye syndrome. I would most like to fully correct my vision defect and no longer need glasses. Is it possible in my case?
Karolina

Doctor’s answer
A laser vision correction surgery is a form of correction, like glasses and contact lenses, which means that after the procedure the patient should as clearly as in the best-chosen glasses or contact lenses.
During a qualifying examination, a doctor tests the patient’s close-up and distance visual acuity – both objectively using an autorefractometer and subjectively using the Snellen’s chart. On the basis of these tests, the doctor will be able to choose the most suitable correction method.
Only after the patient accepts the predicted correction result presented by the doctor, does the patient make the decision to undergo the surgery and sign an informed consent form together with the ophthalmic surgeon who also conducts the qualifying examination.

Does a thin cornea preclude the performance of a laser vision correction procedure?

I had a preliminary qualifying examination in another clinic and, unfortunately, I was disqualified from having a laser vision correction surgery due to insufficient thickness of the cornea. Do you offer other correction methods which allow correcting short-sightedness (-6.0 dioptres) in spite of a previous disqualification?
Magdalena

Doctor’s answer
Corneal thickness itself does not constitute a contraindication to performing laser vision correction using a surface method (in our clinic we offer LASEK and TransPRK methods).
However, other parameters need to be verified before the final decision regarding the qualification for the procedure can be taken. In order to do this, you have to attend a preliminary qualifying examination which costs 300 PLN. If you decide to undergo the surgery in a one-day-procedure mode (the examination and the surgery on the same day), the cost of the qualifying examination will be deducted from the total cost of the bilateral procedure (surgery on both eyes). The maximum cost of the surgery is 7000 PLN for both eyes, but it depends on the correction method you will be qualified for. The current prices of particular methods are available on our website in the pricelist.

Laser vision correction and pregnancy

If I undergo a laser vision correction surgery (my refractive error is -1.75 dioptres in one eye and -2.0 dioptres in the other) and I get pregnant a month or so after the procedure, should I be concerned? My husband and I are trying to have a baby and I would also like to have laser vision correction, but I have read that I need to wait approximately 6-12 months after the procedure before I get pregnant. I would be very grateful for your response regarding this matter.
Izabela

Doctor’s answer
Pregnancy, or, to be more precise, hormonal imbalance typical of pregnancy, may affect the results of the preliminary qualifying examination and later also affect the results of the laser vision correction surgery itself. What is more, every patient has to take medications in the form of eye drops for at least a month (depending on how the healing process goes and what recommendations the doctor has provided), which may have an influence on the whole body.
We recommend postponing the decision to have a baby until at least the treatment is terminated, i.e. until about 3-6 months after the procedure, or considering having a laser vision correction after the pregnancy, approximately 3-6 months after you stop breastfeeding. You can find more information regarding this issue in our article (https://www.artlife.com.pl/posts/pregnancy-and-laser-vision-correction-1040.php)

Laser vision correction in chronic diseases or during breastfeeding

I would like to undergo a laser vision correction surgery. My refractive error is -7 dioptres in the right eye and -6,5 dioptres in the left eye. I have a few questions regarding the qualifying examination and the procedure itself:
1. I have mild hypothyroidism. Do I need a certificate from my endocrinologist attesting to the lack of contraindications to the surgery that I should show the doctor during the qualifying examination?
2. Two weeks ago I finished breastfeeding my 2-year-old child (for the last 6 months I breastfed only once a day). Do I need to wait 5 months before I can have the surgery?
3. If I cannot have the surgery earlier than in about 5 months, does it make sense to have the qualifying examination now in order to choose the most suitable method or is it better to wait and make an appointment for the examination in 5 months?
4. I wear contact lenses. Do I need to stop wearing them before the qualifying examination? If so, how many days before the examination should I stop and is it an absolute ban?
5. Will I get a sick note for the convalescence period or will I have to take a holiday leave?
6. What is the waiting time for the examination and the surgery in your clinic?
Agata

It is important for the hormonal balance to be stable before the laser vision correction surgery. It affects the results of the qualifying examination as well as the corneal healing process following the procedure. Due to hypothyroidism (https://www.artlife.com.pl/posts/chronic-diseases-and-laser-vision-correction-1054.php), which you have mentioned, it will be necessary to provide a medical certificate from your endocrinologist. It should contain information regarding the medications you take and in what dosage, and it should attest to the fact that the level of your thyroid hormones is stable. When it comes to breastfeeding (https://www.artlife.com.pl/posts/pregnancy-and-laser-vision-correction-1040.php) – it is not recommended to undergo laser vision correction earlier than 3to 6 months after lactation finishes.

As far as making an appointment for the qualifying examination is concerned, the examination results are valid for three months and the examination price will not be deducted from the total cost of the surgery if you make a separate appointment for a different day. However, if you choose a one-day procedure (the examination and surgery on the same day), the cost of the examination is deducted from the price of the bilateral surgery.

Soft contact lenses should not be worn at all (not even for a while) for at least seven days before the one-day procedure or the scheduled surgery. Hard lenses or toric lenses should not be worn for at least 3-4 weeks before the procedure.

There is no need to take any holiday leave as the doctor can give you a sick note that will cover your convalescence period. It is advisable to decide on the length of your sick leave together with the doctor after choosing the most suitable correction method. One-day procedures (https://www.artlife.com.pl/posts/how-to-prepare-for-a-one-day-procedure-ndash-the-examination-and-the-laser-vision-correction-surgery-on-the-same-day-1076.php) are scheduled at least two weeks in advance.

How quickly does vision improve after laser vision correction?

How long after an EBK laser surgery on one eye can poor vision persist if the defect prior to the procedure is +1.5 -3.75? Is there a risk that you will see badly for a very long time?
Judyta

In our clinic we do not perform a laser vision correction surgery using the EBK method. We offer the following methods: SBK LASIK, TransPRK and LASEK (current prices of particular methods are available in the price list.
The method is chosen by the doctor on the basis of the preliminary qualifying examination results.
Immediately after the procedure the effect is visible enough for the patient not to require glasses or contact lenses to function normally. The estimated corneal healing time is approximately one month regardless of the correction method (https://www.artlife.com.pl/posts/what-are-laser-vision-correction-methods-1033.php).
During this time slight fluctuations in vision and potential light effects, e.g. bright circles (halos) around light bulbs, may occur. As far as the final results of the procedure, it may take up to a few months for the vision to stabilise.

Lyme disease and laser vision correction

Is diagnosed Lyme disease and antibiotic treatment a contraindication to a laser vision correction surgery?
Wojciech

Lyme disease is not an absolute contraindication to a laser vision correction procedure; however, its acute stage (or ocular inflammation), may temporarily delay the decision to perform the surgery. A one-day procedure or the surgery itself may be performed only after the inflammation is cured and the antibiotic treatment is finished.

Laser vision correction after tooth extraction

How much time after tooth extraction is it safe to undergo a laser vision correction surgery?
Sylwia

It is advisable to schedule a laser vision correction procedure for not earlier than a month after the tooth extraction. After that time it is safe to perform the laser correction.

Eyelid surgery and laser vision correction

Which of the two surgeries should be performed first: plastic surgery of the lower eyelids (hollows and dark circles under the eyes) or laser correction of vision defects (+3.5 and +1.5)? How long should the time interval between these two procedures last?
Sylwia

We recommend undergoing a laser vision correction procedure first. The course of the convalescence period is different for each patient, hence the details and further arrangements regarding the subsequent eyelid surgery should be discussed with an ophthalmic surgeon performing the laser vision correction. On average, patients can undergo a blepharoplasty surgery a month after the laser vision correction procedure.
The eyelid surgery is always preceded by a qualifying examination (the cost – 150 PLN – is later deducted from the cost of the procedure). There are no contraindications to having the examination qualifying for the blepharoplasty surgery before the laser vision correction procedure or shortly afterwards. More information on the eyelid surgery is available here: https://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/eyelids-surgery.php

How long do the preparation for a laser vision correction procedure and the convalescence period afterwards take?

Can I apply for a job in the fire service after I undergo a laser vision correction surgery? Is the procedure not a contraindication to pursuing this type of career?
Rafał

Laser vision correction does not require any special preparation on the patient’s part. However, it is important to remember that you should stop wearing soft contact lenses at least 7 days before the surgery and if you wear hard or toric lenses (correcting astigmatism), you should stop wearing them approximately 3 weeks beforehand.
The convalescence after the surgery may look differently depending on patient’s individual features and the chosen correction method. We assume that the corneal healing process lasts about a month. Patient are not excluded from life during this time, yet they have to follow certain recommendations and observe temporary restrictions – for instance, avoid staying in dusty environments, swimming in a pool, sea or lake, using a sauna and doing demanding physical exercises (such as heavy weightlifting). Vision stabilisation may take up to 6 months before the intended results are obtained.

I apply for a job in the fire service after a laser vision correction surgery?

Can I apply for a job in the fire service after I undergo a laser vision correction surgery? Is the procedure not a contraindication to pursuing this type of career?

Undergoing a laser vision correction surgery does not disqualify you as a candidate for work in the fire service. Many of our patients have a laser vision correction surgery in order to successfully undergo vision tests included in the recruitment process when applying for a job in the uniformed services.

Retention wire — is it a contraindication to a laser vision correction surgery?

Is it possible to have a laser vision correction surgery if you wear a retention wire on your teeth?

A retention wire does not constitute a contraindication to a laser vision correction procedure.

What medical tests should be done before an eyelid surgery?

I would like to have a surgical correction of my upper eyelids. What tests should I have before the procedure?

Doctor’s answer
Prior to a blepharoplasty surgery you need to undergo an examination qualifying for the procedure, during which a doctor will take your detailed medical history and find out what your general health condition is and what expectations you have regarding the results of the surgery, as well as thoroughly examine your eyes and the surrounding area. The cost of the qualifying examination is 150 PLN and is deducted from the total cost of the surgery. More information and the price list are available on our website: https://www.artlife.com.pl/pl/en/offer/eyelids-surgery.php

Return to work following a laser vision correction surgery

I spend a lot of time working in front of a computer, with not more than a week absence from the office during the holiday season. Would a week leave after the surgery be enough before I return to work?

Doctor’s answer
The convalescence period after which you can safely return to work is determined by the correction method used during the procedure. Following an SBK LASIK surgery you can return to everyday activities as soon as the next day after the procedure (with certain limitations for a period of two weeks up to two months), whereas a TransPRK or LASEK surgery patients complain of significant pain for the first 2-4 days, which may present a challenge if you have to work during this time. However, you will be perfectly able to return to work a week after the procedure. In case of work requiring spending long hours in front of a computer screen it is strongly advised to take regular breaks every 45-60 minutes and have a possibility of switching to different tasks, i.e. not in front of a monitor. Included in the price of the surgery you will receive medications in the form of eye drops, which should be administered a few times a day for the first 30 days following the procedure.

Laser vision correction in hypothyroidism and acne treatment

Is mild hypothyroidism a contraindication to a laser vision correction surgery (I take medications and my test results are within normal range)? How long do I need to wait after termination of isotretinoin treatment before I can make an appointment for a preliminary qualifying examination (lack of skin disorders, dry eyes)
Katarzyna

Doctor’s answer
It is necessary to provide a medical certificate from your endocrinologist attesting to the severity of the disease, stability of hormonal levels and lack of contraindications to the procedure. You have to bring the certificate with you to the examination. On the basis of the examination results and the certificate from the endocrinologist the doctor will decide whether you can be qualified for the surgery and, if so, which correction method will be the most suitable in your case. If your treatment includes medications from the isotretinoin group, it is recommended to schedule the surgery at least three months after the treatment termination.

Are thyroid diseases a contraindication to laser vision correction?

I have a Hashimoto disease and I take Euthyrox. I have come across information that in order to be qualified for a laser vision correction surgery I need a medical certificate from my treating physician and the medication dosage has to be stable. Is it enough to meet the above criteria to be qualified for the procedure?
Jola

Doctor’s answer
Yes, it is. A medical certificate from your endocrinologist is required which attests to the degree of the disease, stability of hormonal levels and lack of endocrinological contraindications to the surgery. You need to present the certificate during the preliminary qualifying examination. On the basis of the information contained in the certificate and the results of the examination the ophthalmic surgeon will take a decision as to whether it is possible to perform the laser vision correction procedure and which correction method will be the most suitable in your case.

Laser vision correction surgery during the summer

I am planning to undergo a laser vision correction surgery in July. Is it the right moment for such a procedure?
Kasia

Doctor’s answer
Summer is an equally good time to have a laser vision correction surgery as any other season of the year. What is the most important is to follow the postoperative guidelines, e.g. refrain from swimming in pools or natural water reservoirs and practising physically demanding sports for the first thirty days after the procedure. Once you sign up for a one-day procedure or for a preliminary qualifying examination, you will receive an email containing detailed doctor’s recommendations. You can make an appointment on the phone or by filling in a preliminary qualification form available on our website. Following the surgery it is essential to adhere to all the postoperative guidelines and use special eye drops (provided by the Centre, included in the price of the procedure) according to the doctor’s recommendations included in the discharge received after the procedure.

How long before the examination qualifying for laser vision correction do I have to stop wearing contact lenses?

Can I come to the examination appointment wearing contact lenses?
How much time before the surgery do I need to stop using them?

Kamil

Doctor’s answer
During the preliminary qualifying examination a number of tests are performed, which include the assessment of the shape and thickness of the cornea. Wearing contact lenses may distort the measurements and for this reason you should not wear contact lenses for at least 1-2 days before the appointment. If you are planning to undergo the examination and the surgery on the same day (one-day procedure), you should refrain from wearing the lenses for at least 7 days before the procedure.

I return to work in front of a computer?

Provided that the procedure will be performed using an SBK LASIK method, how soon afterwards will I be able to return to work in front of a computer screen?
Kamil

Doctor’s answer
The return to computer work after an SBK LASIK surgery is possible even on the next day. You have to remember, however, to take 5-10-minute breaks from work in front of a screen every hour and strictly follow the postoperative guidelines regarding the administration of medications in the form of eye drops and lubricating eye drops every hour.

A few questions to a specialist.

I am considering having a laser vision correction surgery, but I have a few questions, which I would like to ask a specialist.
1. What are the restrictions after the surgery? Is it necessary to take a sick leave from work if I work 8 hours in front of a computer? What do I need to be careful about following the procedure?
2. What does the preparation for the procedure look like? Do I need to refrain from anything earlier in advance or is it possible to undergo the surgery offhand without preparation?
3. How long is the convalescence period?
4. How long do I have to wait for the preliminary qualifying examination and the procedure in your clinic?

Krzysztof

Doctor’s answer
1. It is possible to return to work as soon as 1-3 days after a laser vision correction procedure, depending on the correction method. You will receive a doctor’s note to cover the absence or you can take a rest leave instead. It is necessary to take 5-10-minute breaks from work every hour. Following the surgery you should use prescribed medications (eye drops), avoid staying in dusty environments, sleep in special eye shields for the first 7 days after the surgery, wear sunglasses outdoors, limit intensive physical activity (mild aerobic training may be performed as early as approximately 4-5 days after the procedure). The cost of the procedure covers the eye drops, eye shields and sunglasses.
2. If you wear contact lenses, you should stop using them at least 7 days prior to the appointment in our Centre. In case of a long-term or permanent pharmacological treatment, it is necessary to obtain a certificate from your treating physician attesting to the lack of contraindications to the procedure and the stability of medication doses for the following 6 months.
3. The convalescence period after the surgery lasts 30 days.
4. One-day procedures are conducted two days a week, and the waiting time is maximum 1-2 weeks from the first email or phone contact with the Centre.

Can such a “small” refractive error be corrected with laser?

I am 18 years old and a mild refractive error, but I have always dreamt of laser vision correction so that I would no longer need glasses. Can a refractive error of approximately -1,5 or -1,75 dioptres be qualified for the procedure?
Rafał

Doctor’s answer
Your refarctive error falls within the acceptable range possible to be corrected with laser, which is from -14,0 to +6,0 dioptres and up to 6 dioptres in case of astigmatism. Due to your young age it is also important for the refractive error to be stable, with fluctuations not greater than 0,5 dioptre within a year. If you are interested in having a preliminary qualifying examination, please fill in a preliminary qualification form online or contact us via phone or email.

How long after I finish breastfeeding is laser vision correction contraindicated?

I am interested in having a laser vision correction procedure. However, I am currently disqualified from the surgery due to breastfeeding. How long after I finish breastfeeding can I be qualified?
Katarzyna

Doctor’s answer
Breastfeeding is the time when a lot of changes occur in the woman’s body due to a so-called hormonal havoc. Your refractive error may not be stable during this period and the examination results may be unreliable. An optimal time for laser vision correction is approximately 6 months after you terminate breastfeeding, when the hormonal balance should be restored and your body should start functioning normally as it did before the lactation period.

The job of a flight attendant and medical leave.

I work as a flight attendant. How long should I stay on a medical leave before I safely return to work?
Miriam

Doctor’s answer
The duration of the medical leave should be individually consulted with the doctor depending on the number of hours you spend per day on the plane. In your case a recommendable duration is approximately two weeks. However, it may be subject to modification during your doctor’s appointment.

A few questions regarding laser vision correction and the convalescence period.

I would like to undergo a laser vision correction procedure in your Centre. My current refractive error is approximately -6 dioptres in both eyes, and I have been wearing contact lenses for many years (currently -5.5 D in the left eye, -6 D in the right eye). Can I have the surgery on the same day as the examination? How does the preparation for the procedure look? Do you provide a doctor’s note for the convalescence period afterwards (I work at least 8 hours per day in front of a computer)?
Dominika

Doctor’s answer
Your refractive error falls within the acceptable range possible to be corrected with laser, which is from -14.0 dioptres to +6.0 dioptres and up to 6 dioptres in case of astigmatism. Laser vision correction can correct both refractive errors as well as their combinations. In our Ophthalmologic Centre we perform one-day procedures, which means both a preliminary qualifying examination and the surgery are conducted on the same day. A follow-up examination is scheduled either a day or a week after the surgery depending on the correction method you have been qualified for. You should not wear contact lenses for at least 7 days before the one-day procedure. On the day of the surgery it is not allowed to apply any makeup, use perfumed deodorants or perfumes, and it is recommended to wear comfortable clothes. It is also advised to come to the clinic with an accompanying person, as it is not allowed to drive after the surgery. You cannot have any infection on the day of the surgery, otherwise the procedure will not be performed. We do provide a doctor’s note if required. The duration of the medical leave is established individually and may be up to 30 days after the surgery.

Correction of high-degree short-sightedness.

I have been wearing contact lenses for 30 years. I have a refractive error of -7,0 dioptres in the right eye and -6,75 dioptres in the left eye. Currently I also have difficulty with reading. Is there a solution to my problem? How long before a qualifying examination and the surgery do I have to stop wearing contact lenses?
Dorota

Doctor’s answer
Your refractive error is possible to correct. After the age of 40-45 a need to use reading glasses appear. It is a result of a natural process which begins at this age. Following a laser vision correction procedure you will only use reading glasses. You have to refrain from wearing contact lenses for at least one day prior to the qualifying examination and at least 7 days before the surgery itself and before a one-day procedure (qualifying examination and surgery on the same day). More information regarding laser vision correction in a one-day-procedure mode and the qualifying examination is available here: https://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/one-day-procedure.php

How does eyelid correction look in practice?

I am planning to have the rim of my eyes, i.e. the upper and lower eyelids, corrected. I would like to know how it looks in practice, how much it costs, how much time the surgery takes, and whether it is conducted under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia, how long the patient stays in your clinic after the procedure and whether it is possible to be discharged on the same day. I would be grateful if you could answer the above questions and provide all the other details regarding the surgery.
Henryka

Doctor’s answer
An upper and lower eyelid correction surgery can be conducted following a qualifying examination during which a doctor takes a thorough medical history regarding the patient’s general health condition, presents the predicted result of the procedure and treatment plan. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is conducted under local anaesthesia and it takes approximately 1 hour. A detailed description of the surgery is available in the following article: https://www.artlife.com.pl/posts/blepharoplasty-ndash-characteristics-of-the-surgery-and-the-convalescence-period-results-and-contraindications-958.php The cost of an upper eyelid surgery oscillates between 3100 PLN and 3600 PLN, and the cost of a lower eyelid surgery oscillates between 3600 PLN and 4100 PLN. The final cost is calculated during the qualifying examination. There are a few factors which may contribute to a higher price of the surgery, including the removal of additional fat herniation.

Questions regarding laser vision correction

I am 28 years old and for the last 10 years I have been wearing corrective glasses for short-sightedness and astigmatism. Right eye: sphere:-3,0,cylinder: -1,0, axis: 105 Left eye: sphere:-3,75, cylinder: -0,75, axis: 40
1) Is it possible to fully correct my refractive errors so that I can have perfect visual acuity?
2) What would be an approximate cost of laser vision correction in case of short-sightedness and astigmatism?
3) I am under regular supervision of an endocrinologist due to hypothyroidism. My hormonal levels are under control. Are there any contraindications to a laser vision correction surgery in my case?
4) I practise indoor climbing. Would I have refrain from training for some time?

Justyna

Doctor’s answer
Your refractive error falls within the acceptable range possible to be corrected with laser, which is from -14.0 dioptres to +6.0 dioptres in case of short-/far-sightedness and up to 6 dioptres in case of astigmatism. Laser vision correction corrects both of these errors as well as their different combinations.
1. The procedure gives you the possibility to see as clearly as in most accurately chosen glasses.
2. The cost of the surgery depends on the method you will be qualified for. The cost of a bilateral surgery oscillates between 5900 PLN and 6400 PLN. In case of a one-day-procedure mode (preliminary qualifying examination and surgery on the same day) the cost of the examination (250 PLN) is deducted from the total cost of the procedure. The cost of the procedure includes a pair special sunglasses, eye shields and eye drops which should be administered for the first month after the surgery, as well as the first follow-up examination a week after the surgery.
3. Thyroid diseases are not a contraindication to laser vision correction. However, in order to be qualified for the procedure it is necessary to provide a medical certificate from your endocrinologist attesting to the degree of the disease, stabilisation of hormone levels and lack of contraindications to a laser vision correction surgery. It should be taken into consideration that thyroid diseases may slow down the healing process in the eyes and prolong the convalescence period.
4. Following a laser vision correction procedure it is recommended to refrain from any activities involving extensive physical effort. It does not mean, however, that it is not allowed to do some mild exercise such as jogging, stretching or brisk walking. It is advised to avoid lifting weights and doing sports which cause increased intraocular pressure. You should refrain from indoor climbing for the first month after the surgery.

How soon after I finish lactation can I undergo a laser vision correction surgery?

I gave birth six months ago and I breastfed for 5 months. When can I make an appointment for a qualifying examination and a surgery on the same day?
Ania

Doctor’s answer
During pregnancy and breastfeeding a lot of changes occur in the woman’s body, which are caused by a so-called hormone havoc. A refractive error may not be stable during this period, hence the examination results may be unreliable. The best time to undergo a laser vision correction surgery in a one-day-procedure mode (preliminary qualifying examination and the surgery on the same day) is about 6 months after labour and if you breastfeed – 6 months after the lactation period is finished. It is the time needed for the hormonal balance to be restored and for the body to return to its regular functioning.

Return to work in front of a computer after laser vision correction.

I work a lot in front of a computer. Does it mean that I will have to take a 30-day sick leave or will I be able to return to work earlier?
Katarzyna

Doctor’s answer
Our patients who work in front of a computer usually return to work on the next day after an SBK LASIK surgery and after at least a week in case of LASEK and TransPRK procedures. We suggest that you use your holiday leave or take a sick leave then.

When is it possible to return to work in front of a computer after laser vision correction? Can corneal hypoxia be a contraindication to the procedure?

I work 8 hours per day in front of a computer.
1. Will I be able to return to work a week after an SBK LASIK surgery?
2. Can corneal hypoxia caused by wearing contact lenses prevent me from having the procedure?
I would be grateful for the answers.

Dorota

Doctor’s answer
TThe choice of the most suitable correction method remains with the doctor, who makes the decision on the basis of the results of the preliminary qualifying examination after conducting a number of tests and taking your medical history. Regardless of the chosen method, a return to work in front of a computer a week after the procedure is usually possible, yet it is important to follow certain work hygiene rules, such as taking regular breaks in order to look into the distance for a moment, using a blue light filter or lubricating the eyes. Corneal hypoxia (underoxydation of the cornea) should not be a contraindication to the surgery. However, only during the qualifying examination the doctor will tell you how soon the surgery can be scheduled after you stop wearing contact lenses.

Post-operative recommendations regarding driving a vehicle and travelling by plane.

When is it allowed to drive a car and travel by plane after the surgery?
Aneta

Doctor’s answer
It is advised not to fly on the plane earlier than 3 days after the procedure. Driving a car is a more individual matter and it depends on what refractive error you have and how stable your vision is after the surgery. In most cases, it is possible to return to driving right after a follow-up examination, but there are exceptions.

Is it possible to correct astigmatism?

I would like to find out whether I am eligible for laser vision correction. I had an ophthalmologic examination and the doctor told me that my refractive error was difficult to correct and that contact lenses were unsuitable for me because of the cylinders. My refractive error is: In the right eye: +0.25/ -4 dioptres and a third, unknown, parameter with a value of 170 In the left eye: 0,0/ -4 dioptres and the third parameter with a value of 10.
Karol

Doctor’s answer
Your refractive error still falls within the acceptable range possible to be corrected with laser, which is from -14.0 dioptres to +6.0 dioptres in case of short-/far-sightedness and up to 6 dioptres in case of astigmatism. Laser vision correction can correct both myopia and astigmatism as well as their combinations. First I invite you to a preliminary qualifying examination, during which a number of tests and measurements will be conducted and you will find out which correction method is the most suitable for you. In order to make an appointment for the examination, fill in a preliminary qualification form online or contact us on the phone.

Does working in front of a computer affect the eyes?

I work 8-10 hours a day in front of a computer screen. Is there a risk of a refractive error reappearing a few years after a laser vision correction surgery as a consequence of long-term computer screen exposure?
Magda

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction corrects your vision as well as the best glasses. Everything depends on the severity of the refractive error that has been corrected and the lifestyle that you lead. It is essential to remember about proper eye hygiene while using a computer — you should take regular 5 or 10-minute breaks every hour to look into the distance. Vision improvement after laser vision correction is gradual, with a stable result usually obtained in approximately six months after the surgery. After the procedure every patient receives information and recommendations which they should strictly follow. They are also provided with special eye drops, which should be applied for the first month after the procedure to boost the healing process, prevent complications and maintain appropriate eye lubrication during the convalescence period as well as optimal vision acuity after the laser vision correction surgery.

Price of laser vision correction and age limits for the procedure.

I have a question what the price of a laser vision correction surgery is in case of a 16-year-old astigmatic teenager.
Marcin

Doctor’s answer
The minimum age for laser vision correction is 18. What is also important is that the error has been stable for at least a year before the surgery. The cost of a preliminary qualifying examination is 250 PLN, and the maximum cost of a bilateral surgery is 6400 PLN (the price depends on the method of the procedure, which is chosen by the doctor on the basis on the examination results). In case of a one-day-procedure mode (examination and surgery on the same day) the cost of the examination (250 PLN) is deducted from the total cost of the bilateral surgery, so the maximum cost of the whole procedure, both the qualification and the correction, is 6400 PLN. The price includes sunglasses, protective eye pads, eye drops for monthly application and the first follow-up examination, which takes place either a day or a week after the surgery, depending on the method you will be qualified for.

Waiting time and sick leave.

How long do you have to wait for the surgery? Will I need a sick leave after the procedure?
Anna

Doctor’s answer
Our Centre offers laser vision correction in a one-day-procedure mode, which means that a preliminary qualifying examination and the surgery itself are both conducted on the same day, provided that the results of the examination are positive and do not disqualify you from the procedure. In case of a one-day procedure the cost of the examination, which is currently 250 PLN, is deducted from the cost of the bilateral surgery. The procedure may also be conducted on a different day, which is convenient to you. One-day procedures are conducted twice a week and you should make an appointment approximately 1-2 weeks in advance. Our patients frequently return to work as soon as on the next day after an SBK LASIK surgery. However, if your job requires significant physical effort or involves exposure to dust, it is recommended to benefit from a sick leave which can be provided by the operating doctor. Following LASEK and TransPRK procedures patients may resume work at least a week after the surgery. We suggest that you take a holiday leave or ask for a sick leave for this time.

Is my refractive error possible to correct?

I am currently wearing contact lenses of -7 dioptres in the left eye and -7.5 dioptres in the right eye. Additionally I have astigmatism ( -2.25 dioptres cylinder, axis 150 in the left eye and -2.25 dioptres cylinder, axis 30 in the right eye). Do I qualify for laser vision correction with such severe short-sightedness combined with astigmatism?
Piotr

Doctor’s answer
By all means, you can be qualified for the procedure. Your refractive error still falls within the acceptable range possible to be corrected with laser, which is from -14.0 dioptres to +6.0 dioptres in case of short-/far-sightedness and up to 6 dioptres in case of astigmatism. First I invite you to a preliminary qualifying examination, during which a number of tests and measurements will be conducted and you will find out which correction method is the most suitable for you. Please remember not to wear contact lenses for 2-3 days before the examination and for at least 7 days before the surgery.

Does the season of the year affect laser vision correction results in any way?

I am thinking of having a laser vision correction surgery, but I am not sure whether it is possible to undergo the procedure in the summer.
Anna

Doctor’s answer
Summer is an equally good time for having laser vision correction as any other season of the year. After the procedure it is crucial, however, to follow all of the post-operative doctor’s recommendations, for instance do not swim in pools or natural water reservoirs or do any intensive sports exercises for the first 30 days after the surgery. Once you make an appointment for a qualifying examination or a surgery in a one-day-procedure mode, you will receive detailed recommendations via email. You can make an appointment via phone or by filling in a preliminary qualification form (https://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/preliminary-qualification-form.php) ONLINE. It is very important to follow the doctor’s instructions and regularly apply eye drops (provided by the Centre, included in the price of the procedure) according to the  medical prescription received after the surgery.

Martial sports after laser vision correction

I have been considering undergoing a laser vision correction surgery for some time. Currently I have a refractive error of -6.0 dioptres in the right eye and -5.75 dioptres in the left eye, which is accompanied with astigmatism (0.25 in both eyes). However, there is one question which concerns me. I practice martial sports and as a result of intensive training I often have very high blood pressure. I also frequently take blows to the head or somewhere near the eyes, and every now and then I get hit in the open eye. Does the sport I practice increase the risk of post-surgical complications due to exhaustive training sessions and receiving blows?
Adrian

Doctor’s answer
The refractive error you have can by all means be corrected. Since you practice martial sports, which definitely belong to extreme sports, after conducting a thorough preliminary qualifying examination and taking tour detailed medical history the doctor will choose the most suitable laser vision correction method.  In your situation a TransPRK or LASEK method is usually recommended. More information about these methods is available here: https://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/methods.php
What is also important is to follow the post-operative doctor’s recommendations and refrain from demanding training for the first 30 days after the procedure. After this time you can gradually return to your normal sports routine.

A question about the course of the procedure

Is the laser vision correction surgery painful? I’m anxious about the procedure itself and I am afraid that something may take me by surprise and I will move during the surgery.
Ania

Doctor’s answer
In the course of the laser vision correction procedure painkillers in the form of eye drops are applied into the eyes, which act as a local anaesthetic, hence the surgery is completely painless. During preparation time the nurse will explain the whole procedure to you step by step, from entering the operating room and lying on the operating bed to the actions performed by the doctor. When you are already in the operating room, the same nurse will assist you during the surgery. At the right moment you will be informed about the next steps of the procedure by the medical team. The most important thing is to follow the instructions of the personnel and remain calm throughout the procedure. The whole bilateral surgery lasts approximately 15-20 minutes.

Chances for laser vision correction

I am interested in having a laser vision correction surgery. I have been wearing glasses for about 20 years. I am 37 years old and my refractive error is approximately -4.5 dioptres.  Do I have any chances for the procedure? What is the cost of the surgery?
Aneta

Doctor’s answer
By all means, you have a chance for laser vision correction. Your refractive error is within the range of dioptres possible to correct with a laser (from -14,0 to +6,0 dioptres and up to 6 dioptres in case of astigmatism). In the first place you should make an appointment for a preliminary qualifying examination during which a number of tests will be run and you will find out which correction method is suitable for you.
The cost of the qualifying examination is 250 PLN. The maximum cost of a bilateral surgery is 6400 PLN. A detailed price list is available on our website. In case of a one-day procedurę (qualifying examination and surgery on the same day) the cost of the examination is deducted from the total cost of the bilateral surgery.
In order to make an appointment for the qualifying examination please fill in a preliminary qualification form online or contact us via phone.

Laser vision correction and tattoos.

Does having a tattoo made before or after the procedure pose any risks or does it entail any complications?
Johnny

Doctor’s answer
The safe period of time between having a tattoo made and undergoing a laser vision correction surgery is one month. After the procedure you should wait two months before having a tattoo. It is connected with the general immunity of the body, which may be decreased during the convalescence period following the surgery.

Preparation for laser vision correction. Contraindications to the surgery.

I would like to know what the preparation for the procedure is like. I have a refractive error of approximately -5,0 and -4,5 dioptres. Are there any clear contraindications? What tests should I have?
Marta

Doctor’s answer
On the day of the procedure you should come to our Centre in comfortable clothes which do not restrict your movements in any way. You need to make sure you have no infection. You are not allowed to put on any make-up or use perfumes or any other scented body sprays. Prior to the surgery you will receive more recommendations in an email. There is no need to undergo any additional tests before the preliminary examination in our clinic. If you have any recent results of ophthalmologic tests, it is advisable to take them to the qualifying examination. Some of the major contraindications to laser vision correction are: age under 18, lack of refractive error stabilisation, eye diseases, diabetes-related retinal changes, implanted heart pacemaker, cancer, mental diseases, addictions, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Is hormonal therapy a contraindication?

I am thinking of having a laser vision correction surgery. I am a short-sighted person and I wear -1.75 D contact lenses, but I am currently in hormone therapy with Femoston – may it be a contraindication to the procedure?
Agnieszka

Doctor’s answer
Taking hormone medications is not a contraindication to a laser vision correction procedure.  However, it is necessary to provide a medical certificate from your endocrinologist attesting to the stability of dosage within the last 3 months and anticipated lack of changes of dosage for the first 6 months after the surgery.

What are the restrictions after the surgery?

I have been considering having a laser vision correction procedure for a few years, but I have not taken any steps in this direction yet. I am 39 years old and I hope it is not too late for me to be qualified for the surgery. I understand that my eligibility for the procedure can only be verified after the examination, but before I make an appointment, in case I am qualified, I would like to ask the following questions:
1. Are there any post-surgical restrictions I will have to comply with, such as heavy lifting, driving a car or doing physical exercise? If so, what restrictions are there and for how long?
2. What does the choice of correction method depend on and what are the differences between the methods?
3. Does it make sense to undergo a laser vision correction procedure at my age?
Jakub

Doctor’s answer
1) During the convalescence period, which lasts approximately one month, it is not allowed to use a sauna, swim in a pool or a natural water reservoir or do any activities requiring excessive physical effort. It is also strongly recommended to avoid dusty or smoky environments for the first month after the surgery.

2) The choice of correction method depends on the results of the tests conducted during the qualifying examination and patient’s medical history. A thorough description of the methods is available at http://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/methods.php and the differences between the methods are described under the FAQ tab: http://www.artlife.com.pl/en/faq.php

3) Your age is not a contraindication to the surgery. It definitely makes sense to have a laser vision correction procedure in order to enjoy perfect eyesight without glasses or contact lenses.

How long can I take a sick leave for?

I am a physical education teacher and a swimming instructor. If I decide to have a laser vision correction surgery on both eyes, how long can I receive a sick note for?
Marta

Doctor’s answer
During a convalescence period following a laser vision correction procedure, which lasts up to 30 days, it is not allowed to use a sauna, have a swim in a pool or a natural body of water or do any activities which require excessive physical effort. Therefore, in your situation it is recommended to take the maximum amount of sick leave, i.e. 30 days.

What is allowed and what is not allowed after laser vision correction?

I am thinking of undergoing a laser vision correction surgery. My refractive error is -1.75 dioptres. I have a few questions for you regarding the procedure itself as well as the convalescence period afterwards.
1. What are the contraindications to the procedure?
2. Do you offer a one-day-procedure mode, i.e. a qualifying examination and the surgery on the same day?
3. Which activities are not allowed after the procedure and for how long?
Important:
- when is it allowed to travel by plane?
- when is it possible to return to work (I am a professional driver)?
4. What is the cost of the qualifying examination and the surgery?
5. When is it required to have a follow-up examination?
Artur

Doctor’s answer
1) The main contraindications to a laser vision correction procedure are: the age below 18, lack of refractive error stabilisation, eye diseases, diabetes-related changes in the retina, an implanted pacemaker, cancer, mental disorders, addictions.
If you are interested in more information about the contraindications to the surgery, read the following article:
http://www.artlife.com.pl/posts/contraindications-to-laser-vision-correction-656.php

2) We offer a one-day-procedure mode. Laser vision correction in this mode is conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The preliminary qualifying examination is conducted in the morning and if you are qualified and you decide to undergo the surgery, the procedure itself takes place after 4 pm. Further details are available at
http://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/one-day-procedure.php

3) Air travel is not recommended earlier than 3 days after the surgery. Driving a car after laser vision correction is an individual matter, which depends on the type and severity of the refractive error and vision stabilisation after the surgery. It is usually possible to drive right after a follow-up examination, yet it is not a rule. After the procedure it is strongly advised to  refrain from any activities which require excessive physical effort, going to a sauna or swimming in a pool or a natural body of water. It is also recommended to avoid dusty environments for the first month after the procedure.

4) The cost of the qualifying examination is 250 PLN, and the maximum cost of the surgery on both eyes is 6400 PLN. If you are qualified for the bilateral surgery in the one-day-procedure mode, the cost of the examination is deducted from to total cost of the procedure. Patients from outside of the Tricity who decide to undergo the one-day procedure receive an additional discount of 200 PLN towards the costs of the accommodation granted on the basis of booking confirmation. A detailed price list is available at www.artlife.com.pl/en/pricelist.php

5) A follow-up examination is scheduled either for the next day after the surgery or a week after the surgery, depending on the method you have been qualified for (during the preliminary qualifying examination a doctor verifies your eligibility for the procedure and chooses the most suitable method basing on your test results and medical history). More information on various correction methods is available at http://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/methods.php

A few questions regarding laser vision correction

I am considering having a laser vision correction surgery. It would be the most convenient for me to choose the one-day-procedure mode which you offer in your Centre. I would appreciate if you could answer the following questions:
- Is it possible to return to work in front of a computer screen right after the surgery?
- Does undergoing the surgery require taking a sick leave from work? If so, can you provide me with a sick note for the convalescence period?
Joanna

Doctor’s answer
The return to work in front of a computer screen after laser vision correction is  an individual matter which depends on the method chosen for the procedure. We recommend that you should take a few-day break from computer work after an SBK LASIK surgery and if it is not possible – that you at least frequently (every hour) apply eye drops and take breaks from looking at the screen every 45 minutes. In case of a LASEK or TransPRK procedure it is not allowed to work in front of a computer screen for a week after the procedure.
Provided that you undergo an SBK LASIK surgery, you will not need a sick leave, but after a LASEK or TransPRK procedure you will need a sick note for the following 5-10 days. After laser vision correction our doctor can give you a sick note for up to 30 days of the convalescence period.

Specialist ophthalmologic examination

I am writing to ask about an ophthalmologic examination. I would like to find out what it is like, whether it includes an examination of the eye fundus and intraocular pressure measurement, how much it costs and when the earliest possible time for the doctor’s appointment is.
Kinga

Doctor’s answer
During the ophthalmologic examination a doctor tests the patient’s near and distance visual acuity, takes their intraocular pressure, examines the ocular adnexa, the anterior ocular segment and the eye fundus (eye drops are applied after which it is not allowed to drive a car for 3-4 hours).

What does vision stability mean?

Does laser vision correction make sense if my refractive error has changed  by approximately 0,25-0,5 dioptre for the last year? Additionally, I suffer from eye dryness, but lacrimation (Schirmer’s test) is normal. I have always dreamt of having my vision defect corrected, but I do not know if it is possible in my case and if it makes any sense thinking about it.
Karolina

Doctor’s answer
In order to conduct a laser vision correction procedure it is necessary for the refractive error to become stable, with fluctuations not greater than 0,5 dioptre. If your lenses have changed by more than 0,5 dioptre within the last year, it may suggest that your refractive error has not stabilised.  If the change has been less significant, it may also be a measurement error margin (what may affect the results is the time of day when you have your eyes tested, e.g. after a whole day spent working on a computer your eyes may be tired). Eye dryness is not a contraindication to the surgery.

How should I prepare for the qualifying examination?

I am considering having a laser vision correction surgery. Does the qualifying examination require any special preparation? I have false eyelashes. Do I need to take them off before the examination?
Beata

Doctor’s answer
If you wear contact lenses, you should stop wearing them 2 days before the preliminary qualifying examination and 7 days before the one-day procedure (the qualifying examination and the surgery on the same day). The qualifying examination itself does not require any special preparation.  During the examination eye drops are applied after which it is strongly advised not to drive a car for 3-4 hours after the examination. False eyelashes are neither a contraindication to the preliminary qualifying examination or to the surgery.

A few questions regarding laser vision correction.

Can the procedure be conducted during menstruation?
When is it safe to get pregnant after the surgery?
What is the required convalescence period after which it is safe to travel by plane?

Ewa

Doctor’s answer
There are absolutely no contraindications to undergoing the procedure during menstruation.
The period required for vision to stabilise following laser vision correction may last up to 6 months.  During this time there should be no hormonal fluctuations, including the ones normally appearing during pregnancy. That is why pregnancy should be postponed until the 6-month stabilisation period is over.
During the convalescence time after the procedure special attention should be paid to proper eye lubrication. When you travel by plane, your eyes are exposed to extremely dry air. In order to reduce the negative effect of plane conditions on your eyes, you should refrain from flying for the first three days after the surgery and apply preservative-free moisturising eye drops every hour (the drops are part of a medicine kit you will receive prior to laser vision correction, which is included in the cost of the procedure).

Am I required to provide the results of previous ophthalmologic examinations?

Can I undergo a laser vision correction procedure without providing full medical documentation from the previous year? I did not visit an ophthalmologist on a regular basis and the last time I had an appointment was when I was 19 years old (i.e. approximately three years ago).
Roksana

Doctor’s answer
The stability of a refractive error is one of the most essential parameters which may either qualify or disqualify you from a laser vision correction surgery. Only when the error is stable (with fluctuations of not more than 0,25-0,5 dioptre per year) is it possible to perform the procedure in such a way that its result is permanent. If you have not had to replace your glasses with stronger or weaker ones since your last doctor’s appointment, your vision defect is rather stable. Make an appointment for a qualifying examination in order to check how stable it really is and to verify whether you can be qualified for the procedure.

Can age be a contraindication?

I have a refractive error of -2.5 dioptres and astigmatism in both eyes and I am 47 years old. Can my age be a contraindication to a laser vision correction procedure?
Wiesław

Doctor’s answer
In can of laser vision correction, there no no upper age limits. What is incredibly important, however, is your general health condition and lack of contraindications to the procedure. It i salso necessary to rule out any eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataract or any other condictions which could disqualify you from having a laser vision correction surgery. Your refractive error can be corrected provided that you obtain a positive result of a preliminary qualifying examination beforehand. More information about the examination is available at:  http://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/laser-vision-correction-qualifying-examination.php

Braces — is it possible to have a laser vision correction procedure if I wear it?

Can I undergo a laser vision correction procedure if I wear fixed braces?
Klaudia

Doctor’s answer
Wearing braces is not a contraindication to laser vision correction.

Family history of eye diseases

Can I undergo a laser vision correction procedure when I have a refractive error of -3.0 dioptres, treated hypothyroidism and a family history of glaucoma?
Bogdan

Doctor’s answer
Your refractive error is possible to correct as long as you are not disqualified from the surgery during the preliminary examination. Hypothyroidism is not a definite contraindication to laser vision correction. However, in order to be qualified for the surgery it is necessary to provide a medical certificate from an endocrinologist attesting to the degree of the disease, stabilisation of hormone levels and lack of contraindications to the laser vision correction surgery. If you have not been diagnosed with glaucoma or other eye diseases which would rule out laser vision correction, the family history of glaucoma will only be of informative nature to the qualifying doctor.

Return to physical work after a laser vision correction surgery

I am an assembly line worker in a meat processing plant. My job is extremely physically demanding and I sweat excessively all the time. I process and lift very heavy elements. How long do I need to be on a sick leave after the surgery before I can return to work so that my everyday activities do not have negative effect of the healing process?
Ireneusz

Doctor’s answer
Following a laser vision correction procedure it is recommended to refrain from any excessive physical effort for up to a month – an average time required for the cornea to heal, during which any activities that may cause an increased intraocular pressure should be limited as much as possible. We suggest you either take an up-to-30-day sick leave from the doctor who conducts the surgery or use your vacation as a convalescence period.

Is laser vision correction possible in Hashimoto’s disease?

In the nearest future I am planning to undergo a laser vision correction procedure in your Clinic (my refractive error is -7.5 dioptres in the right eye, -6.5 in the left eye and astigmatism in both eyes). However, I have had hypothyroidism (Hashimoto’s disease) for many years and before the final decision I would like to find out whether such thyroid problems are not a contraindication to the surgery, and if not – whether  it is required to provide any detailed medical test results prior to the procedure and whether there is an increased risk of failed surgery or complications resulting from thyroid problems (and if so – what complications I should expect). I am aware of the fact that right before the procedure it is necessary to have an ophthalmological examination qualifying for laser vision correction, but in the first place I would just like to know whether my disease does not completely exclude me from the surgery. I would appreciate if you could answer my questions.
Aleksandra

Doctor’s answer
Your refractive error is possible to correct as long as you are not disqualified from the surgery during the preliminary examination. Hypothyroidism (Hashimoto’s disease) is not a contraindication to such a procedure, but it is necessary to provide a medical certificate from an endocrinologist attesting to the degree of the disease, stabilisation of hormone levels and lack of contraindications to the laser vision correction surgery. In patients with thyroid diseases the postsurgical healing process and the convalescence period may last longer than in people with a healthy thyroid gland.

Hashimoto’s disease and strabismus — are there any contraindications to laser vision correction?

I am considering undergoing a laser vision correction procedure on one eye. I have -4.5 dioptres in the right eye and 0 in the left eye. Additionally I have Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism, which have been stabilised with medications. Apart from that I have strabismus. Are any of the above problems contraindications to a laser vision correction procedure?
Magdalena

Doctor’s answer
Your refractive error is possible to correct as long as you are not disqualified from the surgery during the preliminary examination. Thyroid diseases are not a contraindication to such a procedure, but it is necessary to provide a medical certificate from an endocrinologist attesting to the degree of the disease, stabilisation of hormone levels and lack of contraindications to the laser vision correction surgery. Strabismus cannot be corrected during a laser vision correction procedure (laser only reshapes the cornea), but it can  disappear or at least be reduced once the refractive error has been eliminated.

Giving birth after laser vision correction

I had a laser vision correction procedure in February 2018 (refractive error of -2.0 dioptres). At the moment I am 6 months pregnant and I would like to know whether I should give birth naturally or have a caesarean section. I would not like my vision to deteriorate as a result of natural birth. I will be very grateful for your response.
Martyna

Doctor’s answer
Prior to the labour you should have an ophthalmologic examination so that a doctor can check whether there are not any aberrations in the corneal topography and corneal thickness   as well as examine the eye fundus in order to rule out any degenerative changes or potential  retinal holes, which sometimes occur in short-sighted patients and increase the risk of retinal detachment, especially in case of heavy physical activity and higher refractive errors. It has to be remembered that laser vision correction does not affect the condition of the retina or the changes of the eye fundus, but only reshapes the cornea. If the above changes are ruled out, there are no contraindications to a natural birth.

Use of orthokeratology

My 13-year-old daughter has a refractive error of -6,5 dioptres. Orthokeratology was prescribed three years ago and since then short-sightedness has not progressed. Will the use of orthokeratology not exclude her from a laser vision correction procedure in the future?
Izabela

Doctor’s answer
The use of orthokeratology will not affect your daughter’s qualification for a laser vision correction surgery. However, you should remember that she should stop wearing orthokeratotic lenses at least 4-6 weeks before the procedure. When she turns 18 and her refractive error stabilises, i.e. there are no changes greater than 0,5 dioptre per year, she can make an appointment for a preliminary examination in order to be qualified for the surgery.

Deterioration of reading vision after 40-45 years of age

I am 43 years old. Is it true that after laser correction of  a -2,0 refractive error reading vision always worsens and is it the deterioration permanent?
Kasia

Doctor’s answer
A laser vision correction surgery reshapes the surface of the very thin corneal layer and does not affect the intraocular lens, which is responsible for reading vision. Presbyopia develops naturally in everyone over 40-45 as a result of the loss of the lens elasticity. Laser remodelling of the corneal surface allows to correct short-sightedness, astigmatism and far-sightedness, i.e. refractive errors developed during the adolescence period, when the visual system was still not fully formed. Presbyopia is not a refractive error but a natural physiological process resulting from ageing, like wrinkles and grey hair. This process gradually progresses, which means you will need stronger and stronger reading glasses.

Is laser vision correction possible in case of a developing vision defect?

My short-sightedness is still worsening, with -6,5 dioptres in one eye and -7 in the other. Within the last six months it has increased by 1 dioptre and 0,75 dioptre respectively. I would love to undergo a laser vision correction procedure, but so far there seem to be no chances for the defect to become stable. Is it possible for me to have laser vision correction? My life with such a defect is very difficult. I would be grateful for an answer to my question.
Małgorzata

Doctor’s answer
The stability of a refractive error is one of the most important parameters which either qualify or disqualify you from a laser vision correction procedure. To guarantee permanent results the surgery may only be conducted in case of a stable refractive error (with changes not greater than 0,25 to 0,5 dioptre per year). You should make an appointment for a preliminary qualifying examination and bring your previous examination results so that the doctor can assess the dynamics of your error progression.

A few questions regarding the time after the surgery.

1. How long (approximately) is the convalescence period after a laser vision correction procedure?
2. When can I return to sports activities (jogging, swimming, working out at the gym) after the surgery?
3. Does the ArtLife Centre provide a sick note for the convalescence period?
Maciej

Doctor’s answer
The convalescence period after laser vision correction lasts approximately 30 days. During this time it is recommended to avoid activities involving intensive physical effort. It is not allowed to use a sauna, a swimming pool or any natural bodies of water. You may jog, stretch or go for a brisk walk, but you shouldn’t do any activities involving heavy lifting and sports which may cause increased intraocular pressure. We can provide a sick note for the time of your absence from work if required.

What is the minimum age for having a laser vision correction surgery?

I am 16 years old and a stable refractive error of +2,5 dioptres. I really need to get rid of this vision defect permanently as I would like to go over to the aviation high school in Dęblin. Is it possible to undergo a laser vision correction procedure at my age?
Szymon

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction is a procedure for people over 18, since it is the age at which the development of visual system is complete. What is also extremely important is the stability of the refractive error which should not increase by more than 0,25-0,5 dioptres per year. It is worth having a visual acuity test once a year in order to rule out any refractive error aggravation. When you turn 18, make an appointment for a preliminary qualifying examination to check your refractive error stability and find out whether you are eligible for a laser vision correction procedure.

Is short-sightedness possible to correct?

I am 57 years old and my short-sightedness is corrected with monthly Pure Vision lenses (-4,75 i -3,25), coupled with reading glasses that I’ve been additionally using for some time. I would like to undergo a laser vision correction surgery in order to permanently stop using contact lenses.
Ewa

Doctor’s answer
Yes, your refractive error is possible to be corrected provided that the preliminary qualifying examination confirms your eligibility for the procedure. During the examination a number of tests are conducted on the basis of which a doctor qualifies you for the surgery and chooses the most suitable method of laser vision correction. To find out more about the qualifying examination follow the link: http://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/laser-vision-correction-qualifying-examination.php?lang=EN

When is it possible to return to physical activity after laser vision correction?

Will I receive a sick note from the doctor for the day of the surgery and the first few days afterwards? What is convalescence period like? Is it necessary to refrain from physical activity during the convalescence time and if so – for how long?
Sylwia

Doctor’s answer
You can obtain a sick note for the time of your absence from work starting from the day of the surgery. The price of the procedure includes special eye drops which should be applied strictly according to the doctor’s recommendations for the first 30 days following the surgery.  You will be also provided with a pair of sunglasses to wear outdoors for at least 3 weeks after the procedure. Following laser vision correction, it is strongly advised to refrain from intensive physical effort. You may jog, stretch or go for a brisk walk, but you shouldn’t do any activities involving heavy lifting and sports which may cause increased intraocular pressure. During the first month after the surgery, it is also recommended to avoid going to a swimming pool or a sauna as well as swimming in the sea.

Severe short-sightedness

I have a refractive error of -11 dioptres in one eye. Am I eligible for laser vision correction?
Monika

Doctor’s answer
The WaveLight EX500 excimer laser, which we use in the ArtLife Centre, corrects short-sightedness up to -14 dioptres. As long as the thickness and curvature of the cornea as well as other parameters are appropriate, laser vision correction may be performed. During the preliminary qualifying examination a number of tests are run on the basis of which the most suitable surgical method is chosen.

Questions regarding a qualifying examination.

I am writing to ask you the following questions. First of all, how long do I have to wait for a preliminary examination qualifying for laser vision correction? Secondly, is it possible to drive a car right after such an examination?
Andrzej

Doctor’s answer
Preliminary qualifying examinations are conducted once or twice a week. In order to book a specific time please fill in the form online: http://www.artlife.com.pl/pl/uslugi/laserowa-korekcja-wzroku/kwestionariusz-wstepnej-kwalifikacji-do-laserowej-korekcji-wzroku.php or contact our Centre by phone. During the examination eye drops are administered, and this causes a temporary (4-5 hour-long) decrease in visual acuity both at close and long distance. Therefore, it is strongly advised  not to drive any vehicles after the examination until the visual acuity is fully restored.

Short-sightedness and astigmatism — is it possible to correct such a vision defect?

I have short-sightedness and astigmatism with -1.50 D sphere and -3,50 D cylinder, axis 150 in the right eye, -4.50 D sphere and -3.75 D cylinder, axis 10 in the left eye. Do I have a chance for vision improvement?
Andrzej

Doctor’s answer
Yes, you do. Your refractive error is possible to be corrected provided the preliminary qualifying examination confirms your eligibility for laser vision correction. During the examination a number of tests are conducted to verify your eligibility for the procedure and choose the most suitable surgical method.  For more information on the preliminary qualifying examination follow the link: http://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/the-test.php

The prices and dates of laser vision correction surgery.

I have found the ArtLife Centre on the Internet. I have been looking for an ophthalmologic clinic which offers laser vision correction for some time now. Do the prices given on your website cover the procedure on one or both eyes? What is the waiting period before the qualifying examination and the surgery itself?
Joanna

Doctor’s answer
On our website we give the prices per one eye. The cost of the preliminary qualifying examination is 200 PLN. Both the examination and the surgery can be conducted on the same day. In case of the one-day procedure, the cost of the examination is deducted from the total cost of the procedure on both eyes. The waiting period before the appointment is not longer than 1-2 weeks. More information on the one-day procedure is available here:
http://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/one-day-procedure.php

Does Hashimoto disqualify from laser vision correction?

I have been diagnosed with a Hashimoto disease. Does it disqualify me from laser vision correction?
Gosia

Doctor’s answer
Thyroid diseases, such as hypothyroidism (Hashimoto) are not an absolute contraindication to undergoing a laser vision correction procedure. However, to be qualified for the procedure, it is necessary to provide a medical certificate from your endocrinologist attesting to the degree of the disease, stabilisation of hormone levels and lack of contraindications to the laser vision correction surgery.
It should be taken into consideration that thyroid diseases may slow down the healing process in the eyes and prolong the convalescence period. If you are considering undergoing laser vision correction, make an appointment for a preliminary qualifying examination to rule out any other possible contraindications to the procedure.

When can I return to work after laser vision correction?

I am considering having a laser vision correction surgery in your Centre and I would like to know how long the convalescence period usually is. Do you provide patients with a medical sicknote and if so – for how long? I am a pharmacist and I work 8 hours in front of a computer monitor and I often have to read small print on prescriptions.
Kasia

Doctor’s answer
The convalescence period following laser vision correction depends on the method chosen for the procedure. In case of an SBK LASIK surgery you can return to your everyday activities on the very next day afterwards (with only some limitations for the period of two weeks to two months), whereas following a TransPRK or LASEK procedure patients complain of intense pain for about 2-4 days, which prevents them from working. Patients are advised to return to work a week after the surgery regardless of the method. Since your work causes eye strain, it is recommendable to take breaks every 45-60minutes, and attempt to alter the activities so that you do not need to work in front of the computer all the time. The cost of the surgery includes eye drops, which have to be applied a few times per day for the first 30 days after the procedure. For the time of your absence from work the doctor will provide you with a sick note, covering the desired period of up to 30 days. If you would like to find out more about the surgery methods, click on the following link: http://www.artlife.com.pl/pl/uslugi/laserowa-korekcja-wzroku/metody-korekcji.php

Fear of needles — is it justifiable?

Is it possible to avoid the use of needles in any of the laser correction methods? I would rather not have any anaesthetic injected or have a needle put into my eye. I faint every time I have a blood test, so I cannot imagine a needle in my eye.
Dominika

Doctor’s answer
Needles are not used during a laser vision correction surgery. The patient receives local anaesthetic in the form of eye drops. When laser is in use, the eyelids are kept open with a special distractor to prevent blinking. The patient is conscious and aware of the procedure, yet it is completely painless, and the only thing the patient may feel is the touch on the face. If you want to find out more about the laser vision correction methods in our clinic, click on the following link:  http://www.artlife.com.pl/pl/uslugi/laserowa-korekcja-wzroku/metody-korekcji.php

When can I return to work after the surgery?

I am thinking of having laser vision correction. I am short-sighted, with -1,25 dioptres in both eyes, and I have astigmatism in one eye. What is the price of the procedure? What are the medical recommendations that I should follow after the surgery? Is it true that it is not allowed to return to work earlier than a month after  the procedure?
Magdalena

Doctor’s answer
Your short-sightedness is possible to be fully corrected. It is also possible to correct astigmatism up to 6 dioptres. During a preliminary qualifying examination it will be finally confirmed what results you may expect. The maximum cost of laser vision correction is 6500 PLN. You can find a detailed price list here: http://www.artlife.com.pl/pl/cennik.php
In case of a one-day procedure the cost of the preliminary qualifying examination (200 PLN) is deducted from the price of the both-eye surgery. After the procedure, you need to take the received medications (eyedrops, included in the price of the correction) according to the doctor’s recommendations. The administration period is approximately 30 days. During this time it is not allowed to use a sauna or swim in a pool or any other water tanks. When you can actually come back to work depends to a large extent on the method of the surgery and the type of job you have. In case of office work, it is recommended to return to work a few days after the procedure. If your job involves dust exposure or any other adverse working conditions, it is strongly advised to avoid it for up to 30 days after the surgery. You are entitled to a sick leave for the whole time of your absence. Correction of astigmatism in patients with a thyroid disease.

I have decided to undergo laser vision correction of both eyes. Apart from short-sightedness, I have astigmatism in the right eye. Unfortunately, I have a Hashimoto disease, but I know that it does not necessarily disqualify me from the surgery.
Małgorzata

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction corrects short-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism and various combinations of these defects. Thyroid diseases such as hypothyroidism (Hashimoto) are not an absolute contraindication to having laser vision correction.

When is it possible to undergo a laser vision correction procedure?

Can an 18-year-old person with a stable refractive error who is planning to become a firefighter in the future  undergo a laser vision correction surgery?
Jakub

Doctor’s answer
Yes, it is possible. You can have the surgery at the age of 18 provided that you will meet all criteria, such as refractive error stability, appropriate corneal thickness, etc. During the preliminary qualifying examination a number of tests are conducted whose results allow the operating doctor to decide whether you are eligible for the procedure. If you are, the doctor will present the estimated result of laser vision correction and choose the most suitable surgery method.

How much time do I have to wait after I finish breastfeeding to have laser vision correction?

How much time do I have to wait after I finish breastfeeding before I can undergo a laser vision correction procedure?
Anna

Doctor’s answer
During pregnancy and lactation a lot of changes are observed in a woman’s body, which are caused by a so-called hormonal havoc. In this period, refractive errors may fluctuate in their severity, and ophthalmologic examinations may produce unreliable results. Therefore, an optimal amount of time you should wait before having a laser vision correction procedure is approximately 6 months, as this is the time required for the hormone levels to stabilise and for the whole body to restore its pre-pregnancy functional abilities.

Short-sightedness correction in the one-day procedure

I would like to undergo a laser vision correction surgery in the one-day procedure. My refractive error is -2,25 in both eyes.
Agnieszka

Doctor’s answer
The WaveLight EX500 excimer laser, which we use in the ArtLife Centre, corrects shortsighedness within the range of -0,25 to -14 dioptres, so your error is possible to correct. During the preliminary qualifying examination a number of tests are conducted, whose results allow the operating doctor to decide whether you are eligible for the procedure. If you are, then the most suitable correction method is chosen during the examination as well. The choice of the method depends mostly on the thickness and shape of your cornea. Please fill in the preliminary qualification form online: http://www.artlife.com.pl/pl/uslugi/laserowa-korekcja-wzroku/kwestionariusz-wstepnej-kwalifikacji-do-laserowej-korekcji-wzroku.php
and let us know which month you are planning to have the one-day procedure (the examination and surgery on the same day) so that we can suggest appropriate dates and times.

Good eyesight for a fire-fighting school candidate

I will turn 19 in two years’ time. I am planning to enrol on a fire-fighting programme and become a professional fire-fighter. There is, however, one obstacle I need to overcome, namely my vision defect. My refractive error is -3,5 dioptres in the left eye and -0,75 dioptres in the right eye. I would like to join the fire-fighting school as soon as I graduate from high school. Is it possible to undergo a laser vision correction procedure at the age of 19? To be eligible for the programme, I cannot have a vision defect greater than 09-1,0 dioptres without correction.
Michał

Doctor’s answer
laser vision correction procedure may be performed on a 19-year-old patient as long as  the refractive error has already stabilised, which means it cannot increase more than by 0,25-0,5 dioptres per year. A visual acuity test is conducted during the preliminary qualifying examination. During the examination, your doctor will present the estimated result of laser vision correction.

Air travel following laser vision correction.

Is it allowed to fly on a plane following a laser vision correction surgery? I have heard that it may lead to complications shortly after the procedure.
Sebastian

Doctor’s answer
After laser vision correction it is extremely important to pay attention to proper eye lubrication. During a flight your eyes are exposed to very dry air. In order to reduce eye dryness it is recommended not to travel by plane earlier than three days after the surgery and apply preservative-free moisturising eye drops every hour.

Is a thyroid disease a contraindication to laser vision correction?

I have had hypothyroidism and have taken Euthyrox for eight years. I remain under a regular endocrinological care and have my hormone levels within the normal range. My refractive error is -3 in the right eye and -2 in the left eye. Am I eligible for laser vision correction?
Justyna

Doctor’s answer
Thyroid diseases, such as hypothyroidism (Hashimoto) or hyperthyroidism, are not a definite contraindication to laser vision correction. However, to be qualified for the procedure it is necessary to present a certificate from your endocrinologist which confirms the degree of the disease, hormonal balance and lack of contraindications to laser vision correction. Thyroid diseases may prolong the eye healing process and thus the recovery period following the procedure. Your refractive error is within the laser operative range, so it can be corrected through a laser surgery. During the preliminary qualifying examination numerous tests are run whose results determine the most suitable method of the procedure and enable the doctor to present the expected results of the correction.

Other surgeries versus laser vision correction.

I would like to have a SBK LASIK vision correction procedure and I would like to know whether an aesthetic plastic surgery undergone a week or two prior to laser vision correction is not a contraindication to the procedure. How long should I wait before I get pregnant afterwards?
Natalia

Doctor’s answer
The possibility of conducting a laser vision correction procedure depends on the results of the preliminary qualifying examination. During the examination a number of tests are run (including both subjective and objective refractive error assessment and corneal thickness and shape measurement).  It is also checked whether the patient does not have any eye infection or inflammation for it is crucial not to have any infections or inflammatory conditions on the day of the surgery. If the recovery following the plastic surgery is complete before laser vision correction, it should not affect the results of the qualifying examination in any way. It is not recommended to get pregnant earlier than six months after the laser vision correction procedure for the sake of hormonal balance which is of the utmost importance. When the first six months after the procedure are over, you may attempt to conceive.

Personalisation of the procedure.

Do you conduct personalised laser vision correction surgeries (far-sightedness) based on individual corneal topography?
Paweł

Doctor’s answer
All laser vision correction procedures performed in our Centre are personalised. Laser vision correction is conducted using a method which is chosen individually for every patient during the preliminary qualifying examination. An individual treatment plan is established on the basis of the tests performed during the examination. The examination is also the time to discuss the predicted surgery results and ask the doctor any questions you need answers to. To find out more about the preliminary qualifying examination and the procedure methods click on the following links:
for information on the examination http://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/laser-vision-correction-qualifying-examination.php, and   for information on the methods. http://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/methods.php

Wearing contact lenses and artificial eyelashes during the preliminary qualifying examination.

I have been wearing contact lenses for many years. I am short-sighted, with -6 dioptres in one eye and -7 in the other. I put on contact lenses in the morning and take them off for the night.   I would like to know whether I can undergo the laser vision correction procedure and how much time before the preliminary qualifying examination I should stop wearing the lenses. I have heard that the required period is approximately one to two weeks. I must admit that I do not feel comfortably wearing glasses and it makes a significant difference to me whether I have to wear them for a week or longer. Another question that I would like to ask is whether I can wear artificial eyelashes during the qualifying examination. They are quite short and look as if they were natural, but I do not know if they are allowed during the examination. I know that they are forbidden during the surgery.
Aldona

Doctor’s answer
In order to undergo the preliminary qualifying examination you have to stop wearing soft contact lenses one day before the scheduled appointment, and in case of a one-day procedure (the preliminary qualifying examination and surgery both conducted on the same day) you are not allowed to wear your lenses for at least 7 days prior to the procedure. Artificial eyelashes are allowed both during the examination and the surgery. It is not necessary to take them off before the appointment.

What is the range of vision defects which can be corrected through laser vision correction?

My vision defect is -12 dioptres in both eyes. I am 21 years old and the defect is stable. I have read on a few websites that laser vision correction is performed in case of defects up to -10 dioptres. Is it possible to correct more severe defects in your centre? Is there any other method which proves effective in case of a defect such as mine?
Paulina

Doctor’s answer
The WaveLight EX500 excimer laser, which we use in the ArtLife Centre, corrects short-sightedness from -0,25 up to -14 dioptres. Provided that the thickness of the cornea as well as all the other parameters are normal, laser vision correction may be performed. During the preliminary qualifying procedure a number of tests are conducted and the procedure method is chosen on the basis of their results.

Accommodative strabismus — can it be corrected through laser vision correction?

Can the laser vision correction surgery correct accommodative strabismus? I suffer from accommodative strabismus – I do not squint when I wear glasses, but I have esotropia without them.
Jakub

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction corrects vision defects such as far-sightedness, short-sightedness and astigmatism. It does not, however, correct accommodative strabismus. It only corrects a vision defect and therefore makes wearing glasses no longer necessary. It does not affect  the position of the eyes although there is a chance that following the laser vision correction procedure strabismus may also decrease or even completely disappear.

What is the maximum age at which I can undergo laser vision correction?

Can I have laser vision correction at the age of 62?
Emilia

Doctor’s answer
In case of laser vision correction, there are no upper age limits. What plays an important role in determining whether you are eligible for the procedure or not, is your general health condition and lack of contraindications to the surgery. Eye diseases such as cataract, glaucoma or other conditions disqualifying from laser vision correction also need to be ruled out.

Can past eye surgeries disqualify me from laser vision correction?

My vision defect is approximately +1,75 to + 2.0 depending on the examination. I wear equal contact lenses on both eyes, with only a minor difference in the form of a cylinder on one eye.  My question is whether I am eligible for laser vision correction. The doubts I have result from the fact that I had 3 strabismus surgeries in one of the eyes and I have stitches which prevent me from wearing contact lenses.
Łukasz

Doctor’s answer
We can correct vision defects of this kind, yet only on condition that the thickness and shape of the cornea allow for it. These parameters, as well as many others, are thoroughly checked during the preliminary qualifying examination. Past surgeries are not necessarily a contraindication to the procedure; however, you need to undergo the preliminary qualifying examination in order to fully verify your eligibility.

What is the minimum age for undergoing a laser vision correction procedure?

I have learnt from your website that one of the conditions which have to be fulfilled in order to be eligible for laser vision correction is a finished growth process. Does it mean that it is possible to undergo the procedure at the age of twenty?
Piotr

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction is a procedure suitable for people who are at least 18 years old, as it is the age when the visual system becomes fully developed. It is also crucial for the vision defect to be stable and not progress more than 0,25-0,5 dioptres per year. It is recommendable to undergo an annual test of vision acuity in order to rule out the risk of vision defect progression. We suggest that you make an appointment for the preliminary qualifying examination to verify your eligibility for the laser vision correction procedure.

Surgical correction of strabismus and far-sightedness.

Can a laser procedure correct strabismus? My strabismus is approximately 3 degrees in glasses and 16 degrees without glasses. I am also far-sighted with +4 dioptres in both eyes and diplopia.
Żaneta

Doctor’s answer
During the laser vision correction procedure the corneal surface  is  reshaped in such a way that the correction with glasses or contact lenses is no longer necessary. The WaveLight EX500 excimer laser, which we use in the ArtLife Centre, corrects far-sightedness within the range of +0.25 up to +6.0 dioptres, so your defect pre-qualifies you for the laser vision correction surgery. When it comes to far-sightedness, an appropriate thickness and shape of the cornea are of great importance. These parameters, as well as many others, are thoroughly checked during the preliminary qualifying examination. Laser vision correction, however, does not fully correct strabismus, although strabismus may disappear or regress after the procedure.

The dates and costs of a laser vision correction

I’d like to ask about the possibility of having a laser vision correction. How long do I have to wait for an appointment? What is the procedure of laser vision correction like?
I’m 26 years old, I’m short-sighted (with -6,5 in my left eye and -7,5 in my right eye) and astigmatic. How much does such a correction cost?
Michał

Doctor’s answer
In our Ophthalmologic Centre we offer a one-day procedure, which means that both the qualifying preliminary examination and the surgery are scheduled for the same date. The appointment should be made at least 1-2 weeks prior to the day of the procedure.  Wavelight® Ex500 Excimer Laser, which we use in our centre, corrects vision defects within the range of -14 to +6 dioptres and astigmatism up to 6 dioptres. The preliminary examination costs 200PLN and the maximum cost of a laser vision correction  performed on both eyes is 6500 PLN. In case of the one-day procedure on both eyes, the cost of the preliminary examination is deducted from the cost of the surgery.

Severe far-sightedness — is laser correction possible?

My vision defect is +8,5 dioptres. Is there a suitable procedure to correct such severe defects?
Rafał

Doctor’s answer
Wavelight® Ex500 Excimer Laser, which we use in ArtLife Ophthalmological Centre, corrects vision defects within the range of -14 to +6 dioptres. Your defect exceeds this range. In case of a +8,5D defect, a recommendable surgery is a refractive lens implantation. Our centre does not offer such procedures.

Is the patient under general anaesthesia during the procedure?

Is it possible to undergo the surgery under general anaesthesia?
Daniel

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction procedures are conducted under local anaesthesia. Prior to the procedure, the patient is administered strong eye drops, therefore the procedure is completely painless and the only sensation the patient may feel is touch.

The date of the qualifying examination and the date of the procedure

I’m planning to undergo an eye surgery and I have a question whether it would be possible to make an appointment in your centre for May and how soon after the qualifying examination could I have the procedure.
Mateusz

Doctor’s answer
Our Ophthalmologic Centre offers a one-day procedure, which means that both the qualifying preliminary examination and the procedure itself are scheduled for the same day. It is also possible to make an appointment only for the qualifying examination and in that case a separate appointment can be made for the procedure, but the waiting time is approximately 1-2 weeks.

A qualifying preliminary examination and a laser vision correction on the same day — A one-day procedure

I would like to know whether it would be possible to undergo all the necessary tests and the laser vision correction within 1-2 days. What is the standard waiting time for the examination and  the procedure itself? Does the price depend on the type of vision defect? Is it possible to pay in instalments?
Magda

Doctor’s answer
The one-day procedure that we offer means that both the qualifying examination and the surgery are performed on the same day. The waiting time for the one-day procedure is quite short, as you can make an appointment even one week before the scheduled surgery. The price depends on the laser vision correction method, which will be  chosen by the doctor on the basis of the qualifying examination results (vision defects, thickness of the cornea, corneal topography, keratometry and other factors). We offer our patients a possibility of financing a laser vision correction procedure through a personal loan from the Santander Consumer Bank Inc. on an interest free instalment plan with 10, 20 or 30 instalments and the first month free. The credit cost is covered by ArtLife Plc.

At what age is it possible to undergo a laser vision correction?

Can I have a laser vision correction to correct short-sightedness if I’m 15 years old? Is it possible to undergo this procedure as an underage person if I’m accompanied by a parent or a legal guardian?
Maciej

Doctor’s answer
A laser vision correction is for people over the age of 18, i.e. the age when the eyes are fully developed. It is also very important for the visual defect to stabilise. The defect fluctuations cannot exceed 0,25-0,5 dioptres per year. When you are 18, please come to the qualifying examination to check whether the visual defect is stable enough and whether you are eligible for a laser vision correction procedure.

Contraindications to a laser vision correction

I have a droopy eyelid. I have a heart condition and an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. Am I eligible for the procedure?
Sylwia

Doctor’s answer
Having a cardiac pacemaker is a contraindication to a laser vision correction because the electromagnetic field generated by the laser may disturb the pacemaker.

Is hypothyroidism a contraindication to the procedure?

Can people with hypothyroidism undergo a laser vision correction?
If I wear contact lenses on a daily basis (practically for the last 17 years, with replacement every two weeks) and use glasses only in the morning and evening, do I need to abandon the contact lenses for some time to prepare for the procedure?
Natalia

Doctor’s answer
Hypothyroidism is not a contraindication to the procedure; however, you need a medical certificate from your doctor regarding the lack of contraindications to a laser vision correction. During the surgery the surface of the cornea is smoothed using a laser. When you use contact lenses for a longer period of time, they may cause corneal warpage (shape distortion of the cornea), which may in turn affect the examination results and the results of the surgery itself. Therefore, it is crucial to stop wearing contact lenses at least 7 days before the procedure.

Is it possible to work in front of a computer after a laser vision correction?

I’m short-sighted with a defect of approximately -2 in both eyes and I’m considering a laser vision correction. I’d like to know how long it takes to recover and whether there is anything I should avoid after the procedure, such as working in front of the computer or sun exposure (I’m planning to go to „hot islands”)?
Mateusz

Doctor’s answer
It takes approximately 1 month to recover after the procedure. During this time it is not allowed to use a sauna or swim in a swimming pool or any natural bodies of water. It is strongly advised to avoid increased physical effort such as working out in the gym. Walking and gentle aerobic exercise are both allowed. Sunbathing is not allowed for the first month after the procedure, and even after this period eyes should be carefully protected against excessive UV radiation, which additionally dries the cornea. Working on the computer is allowed; however, you should remember to apply moisturising drops regularly and to take more frequent breaks from work in front of the computer.

Reading glasses — is it really presbyopia?

I read your offer and I am intereste in laser vision correction. I am 45 years old and have had an acute deterioration of my vision for two years. Recently I did an eye examination and now I have to put on the glasses +1 for reading, two years ago I started with +0.5. I would like to mention that during the given period I have spent a lot of time in front of a computer, due to the nature of my work. Upon reading about the eye defects, I conclude that there exists such a condition as presbyopia - a natural process of aging of the eye muscles, which unfortunately can not be corrected. I am asking for an expert’s opinion in this matter. Thank you in advance.
Rafał

Doctor’s answer
It appears, from the description, that you need the glasses only for reading and working in front of a computer. Yes, as you correctly concluded, you probably suffer from presbyopia which unfortunately cannot be corrected by means of laser vision correction.

Keratoconus — is it a contraindication?

I have a question about keratoconus. My ophthalmologist refered me for a detailed examination becease she had some doubts about my case. I wold like to ask whether such examinaiton can be performed in your clinic? In case of confirmation of that impairment – is it a contra indiaction for a laserv vision correction surgery? I am asking beceause I am interested in undergoing one
Mateusz

Doctor’s answer
Diagnosis of keratoconus is based on corneal mapping, which is perfomed during a qualyfying examination. If, during the examination, it turns out that you indeed suffer from keratoconus – laser vision correction will not be possible. Keratoconus is a contraindication for such procedure.

Myopia of a high degree

One eye - approx -11D, the other one twice as high… can I undergo a surgery on one eye only?
Is it safe? I know that I can forget about having the worse eye operated on but maybe I can count on having at least the other one corrected?
Agnieszka

Doctor’s answer
In a case of such serious impaiments lase vision correction is unfortunately impossible, even on one eye only, beceause the refraction error is very often accompanied by organic changes in the retina. In you case an intraocular lens implantantion should be considered.

At what age you can undergo a laser vision correction?

I would like to ask how many years is it possible laser vision correction? I am 14 years old. And if you can perform the procedure, if you have problems with dry eye?
Marika

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction can be performed only after you turn 18. The stability of the visual impairment is crucial. Fluctuations shouldbe greater than 0.25-0.5 diopters in 1 year. The problem with dry eye should be further diagnosed – it may be a sympthom of a systemic disease diseases eg. autoimmune diseases. After excluding all potentially serious causes of the dry eye sydrome, laser vision correction can be made, however, the final decision is made after the qualifying examination. I invite you to a undergo a qualifying examination once you turn 18 it will enable us to determine stability of your impairment and whether you qualify for laser vision correction.

Correction of "pluses" and astigmatism

I would like to make an appointment to visit you. I have been wearing glasses since I remember. I have been suffering from eye defect from childhood (I am a preemie). The left lens of my glasses is +4,25, and the right it is +2,75, I also suffer from strabismus and astigmatism. I would like to not to have to wear glasses anymore. That’s why I would like to check for whether I could undergo a laser vision correction surgery.
Krzysztof

Doctor’s answer
The WaveLight EX500 eccimer laser, which we have at the ArtLife Center, corrects hyperopia in the range from +0.25 to +6.0 D and astigmatism up to 6 D, so the defect given by you can be considered pre-qualified for the laser vision correction. It is crucial that you undergo the qualifying examination, during which a number of tests will be carried out and detailed medical history will be taken.

Is it possible to choose the method of laser vision correction surgery?

I would like to get information whether I am suitable for laser vision correction on the SBK Lasik laser? I wear glasses + 5 and + 3.75.
Łukasz

Doctor’s answer
SBK LASIK is on of the methods of laser vision correction. We are using the WaveLight EX500 excimer laser to perform surgeries. The manner (i.e. the method) in which the procedure will be performed is selected by the operator after the qualifying examination and a thorough talk with the patient. The defect you mention is within the scope of laser’s abilities and, as far as the mentioned factors are concerned, you are pre-qualified for surgery.

Does strabismus rule out laser vision correction?

Is laser vision correction possible with strabismus? I'm after 4 treatments for a cross-converged alternating. I wear +6.0 glasses.
Kasia

Doctor’s answer
Previous strabismus surgery is not a contraindication to laser vision correction. In the case of high-degree hyperopia, the result of the keratometry test, that is, the measurement of curvature of the cornea, is very important. If the cornea is ‘too steep’, the procedure may not be possible. I invite you for the qualifying examinatio to check if you are eligible for surgery.

Can presbyopia be corrected with laser?

I am 42 years old and have a disadvantage of +1.0 on both eyes. I have had problems with eyesight for 5 years but have recently become annoyed. I was at an ophthalmologist and told me that at my age such a defect is hyperopia and is not corrected by laser techniques. Is it true?
Iwona

Doctor’s answer
Presbyopia, is a natural process of aging of the body, the result of which is the need to put on glasses to read text or work in front of a computer. This is not a defect of vision, therefore it can not be corrected with the use of laser vision correction. Presbyopia is a natural physiological process that awaits each of us - it results from the aging of the body, just like gray hair or wrinkles.

Cataract and laser vision correction

I am 40 years old, my error is -6.00 in both eyes, during the last examination I was told that cataract is starting to develop in my eye. Does that disqualify me from the laser vision correction surgery?
Paulina

Doctor’s answer
Diseases of the eye, such as cataract or its’ beginning are contraindication, for laser vision correction procedures.

One day procedure — cost of qualifying examination

I am wondering whether I should undergo laser vision correction and I am wondering whether, if I don’t qualify during the examination, I will only pay the cost of the qualifying examination?
Aleksandra

Doctor’s answer
In One Day Procedure, at first you have to go through the qualifying examination. Should you not qualify for the surgery its’ cost (200 zł) is the only you have to pay. However, if you will be qualified for the procedure the cost of the examination will be subtracted from the cost of the surgery.

Correction of “pluses”

Hello, my error is +3.5 in the left eye and +0.5 in my right eye, my question is: is it true that hyperopia tends to relapse after the surgery?
Sylwester

Doctor’s answer
The WaveLight EX500 excimer laser, which we have in our Centre, is capable of correcting hyperopia from +0.25D to +6.0D. It is possible to correct the error you mention but only if it is in fact hyperopia and not presbyopia, which is age-associated deterioration of eyesight and results from ageing of the muscles which are responsible for accommodation. Hyperopia can be operated once and for all but, unfortunately, presbyopia (which is a natural process) is inoperable.

Correction of high degree refractive error

I suffer from -11.00 D refractive error in both eyes and from astigmatism. Is there any chance I could undergo laser vision correction? Are there any other methods available for me?
Is astigmatism a separate condition? I have heard that it is only possible to correct astigmatism not greater than -6.00? How does it look like? Is there any chance I could get rid of my heavy glasses? :(
Patrycja

Doctor’s answer

The WaveLight EX500 excimer laser, which we have in our Centre, is capable of correcting refractive errors form -14D to +6D and astigmatism up to 6D. The refractive error you mention is then possible to correct. However, it is crucial that you undergo a qualifying examination during which precise measurements to determine the degree of your refractive error as well as the thickness and the shape of the cornea will be taken. Only after acquisitions of this data the operating surgeon will be able to predict the outcome of the surgery.

Correction of myopia and astigmatism

My question is: I currently suffer from astigmatism and myopia, is it possible to correct both within one procedure? How much would that cost? In such case, do I pay for one procedure only (assuming both errors would be corrected during single surgery)?
Joanna

Doctor’s answer
During a laser vision correction procedure the refractive error which was verified during the qualifying examination is corrected. This includes myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism or combination of the above. In your case both astigmatism and myopia will be corrected during a single procedure – so you will pay for one procedure. The price of the surgery depends on the method you will be qualified for. Each method allows for correction of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism or their combination.

Pregnancy after the Laser Vision Correction

Will I able to give natural birth after the laser vision correction surgery or only via C-section?
Dominika

Doctor’s answer
Laser Vision Correction is not a contraindication for spontaneous labour. The surgery does not expose the eye, it only remodels the cornea. However, patients suffering from myopia, regardless whether before or after the surgery, tend to have a very thin retina. During strenuous exercise or labour such thin and weak retina may be susceptible to detachment. That is why in extreme myopia lasering of the retina and c-section are recommended. Nonetheless, the final decision about the course of the labour will be taken by your doctor after appropriate ophthalmologic examination.

Hypothyroidism and Laser Vision Correction

I have been treated for hypothyroidism for the past 10 years and I am under constant supervision by the endocrinologist. Today the hormones are well regulated and within norms. Can I undergo laser vision correction? Is hypothyroidism a contraindication for such surgery?
Darek

Doctor’s answer
In the case of hypothyroidism the stability of the hormones is the most crucial factor. The disease itself is not a definitive contraindication. The positive outcome of the qualifying examination is necessary for determination whether any contraindications occur. If you are under constant endocrinologist’s supervision, you should obtain from him a certificate that will state that no endocrinological contraindications for a Laser Vision Correction occur. Such certificate should be presented to our ophthalmologist during the qualifying examination.

Follow-up visits

I am considering undergoing a Laser Vision Correction surgery. I live abroad and would like to know what the time between follow-up visits is.
Justyna

Doctor’s answer
After Laser Vision Correction first follow-up is usually on the next day after the procedure, preferably in the morning. If the patient will be qualified for such method as EBK, the follow-up takes place 7 days after the surgery. The next visit is usually 2 months after the surgery. However it is not the rule, each case is taken care of individually and the dates are arranged during the first follow-up. The method  for which the patient is qualified is determined during the Qualifying

The date of the qualifying examination and the surgery

I would like to know whether it is possible to independently undergo the qualifying examination and the procedure on two different days. I am asking because before final decision I would like know the approximate cost of the surgery.
Helena

Doctor’s answer
Yes, the qualifying examination and the procedure can be performed independently. After the results of the examination you will have approximately 3-6 months to make the final decision. The period for which the result is relevant is determined by the doctor during the surgery. On the basis of the results the most suitable method and, thus the cost of the surgery, will be determined.

Qualifying examination

I am 32 years old, since the primary school I have been wearing glasses, for the past 10 years I have been working in front of a computer for 8 hours a day, five days a week. I suffer from astigmatism and myopia, my current glasses are -8.5 (left) and -6 (right). I am aware the full information is available only after the examination but could you possibly tell me the cost and the type of correction that could be used in my case?
Karolina

Doctor’s answer
The refractive errors you have mentioned are by all means possible to correct by means of Laser Vision Correction. However, a positive result of the qualifying examination is crucial. During the examination parameters such as thickness of the cornea, subjective/objective refractive error and the topography of the cornea are determined. The price of the procedure depends on the method you will qualify for. Detailed pricelist is available online: http://www.artlife.com.pl/en/pricelist.php

“Plus” refractive error

I am 18 years old and I would like to undergo a laser vision correction surgery in your clinic. I had been wearing glasses from the time I was 4 to the October 2016. Since then I have been wearing contact lenses. My errors are +3.75 in the right eye and +4.75 in the left. My question is whether the correction is possible in my case; I have read that only certain values of the error can be corrected.
Krystian

Doctor’s answer
WaveLight EX500 excimer laser, which is the model we own, is capable of correcting hyperopia from +0.25 up to +6.00. The refractive errors you mention are by all means possible to correct by means of Laser Vision Correction.  In your case the stability of the error for a period of at least one year is crucial. The full insight into your particular case is possible only after the qualifying examination and exclusion of any contraindications. Please do not wear your contact lenses on the examination day.

How long do I have to wait for a visit?

I would like to know how does the reservation look like i.e. how long after registration will I have to wait for the surgery (I am interested in one day procedure)? My refractive error is small; I also suffer from astigmatism (both eyes) I would like to correct all the errors in one go. I would like to know the price of the procedure and if it is possible to correct both refractive error and astigmatism on the same day.
Grzegorz

Doctor’s answer
The date of the One Day Procedure is individually assigned. If you wear contact lenses you have to stop wearing them for at least 7 days before the surgery. We can arrange it so that the procedure will take place on the closest One Day procedure day (minimally 7 days after taking off the contact lenses).
During the surgery both errors are corrected (i.e. hyperopia/myopia and astigmatism). The price of the procedure depends on the most suitable method in your particular case (which the doctor will indicate after the examination).

Laser vision correction and age

I am 55 years old and would like to have my vision at least partially corrected. I have astigmatism in both eyes. How long does the procedure take? How much does it cost? I live abroad and would have to prepare the journey in advance.
Malgorzata

Doctor’s answer
Your age is not a contraindication for a laser vision correction procedure. However, in order to be qualified for the surgery you have to undergo a qualifying examination, to which I would like to invite you. As one of only few clinics in Poland we offer our patients the possibility of undergoing the qualifying examination and the surgery in One Day Procedure mode. Surgery on both eyes takes about 15 minutes, if you take the preparation and the rest after the surgery under consideration it is about one hour. The price of the procedure is dependent on the most suitable method in your particular case (which the doctor will indicate after the examination).

Blepharoplasty and laser vision correction

I am interested in undergoing a laser vision correction procedure on both eyes (-1D), my refractive error is very annoying. Also, would like to undergo blepharoplasty in your clinic. Is it possible to perform both operations on the same day?
Beata

Doctor’s answer
Blepharoplasty and laser vision correction cannot be performed on the same day. Between those two procedures a minimum of 6 month is required. The first operation should be the laser vision correction. The break between the procedures is crucial as healing after the first procedure has to be completed before second surgery is performed.

Vision correction — return to full health

I am myopic, -0.75 and -0.5 also I have astigmatism in both eyes. I am a professional soldier so glasses are very comfortable solution for me and contact lenses tend to dry out after a while. I am 20 years old and my error has been stable for the past two years, no fluctuation whatsoever. Would I be qualified for the procedure and would I be able to return to full health within a month after the procedure?
Oskar

Doctor’s answer
You seem perfectly eligible for the Laser Vision Correction procedure. However, positive result of the qualifying examination is crucial. Also, the most appropriate method of Laser Vision Correction will be chosen for you will be then chosen. The convalescence takes about 30 days, after which you can fully return to your work in the army.

Qualifying test

I have doubts about one particular question from your qualifying TEST: My vision has been stable for the past year’. There was a time when my error was stable (2011/2012), but then I started working in an office (8 hours a day in front of a computer) and my vision started to deteriorate further (by 0.25 D every 12-18 months).Currently, I find my contact lenses too weak (-3.25 D). Is the constant deterioration of my visual impairment a contraindication for a laser vision correction? What is more, does taking oral contraceptives influence the decision about the surgery in any way?
Monika

Doctor’s answer
Change of the refractive power of the glasses is not always connected with progression of the error. It can happen that weaker lenses are prescribed intentionally to make the eye work harder. That is why you should not rely on the power of the glasses you were prescribed but rather on the actual refractive error. If you have results of your past examinations – please take them for the qualifying examination to allow the doctor to compare them with current state of your eyes. Hormonal imbalance may influence the healing process negatively, that’s why it is advisable not to go off oral contraception during the 3 months preceding the operation and for 6 months after it.

Contraindications

I am 27 years old. I have been wearing the same glasses for over 2 years now (left eye: -3.35, right eye -3.0, CYL 0.5). During the last ophthalmologic examination it turned out that my refractive error has changed only by 0.25 (astigmatism in left eye) and it is hard to tell whether the change occurred during the last year because I haven’t noticed any loss of visual acuity. Is it a contraindication?
Justyna

Doctor’s answer
The refractive errors you mention are by all means possible to correct by means of Laser Vision Correction. However, a positive result of the qualifying examination is crucial. Yearly fluctuations of this rate are insignificant. However, we encourage you to bring the results of previous examinations in order to compare them with the current state of your eyes.

Contact lenses

My refractive error is -7 in both eyes, I also suffer from astigmatism (-1). For over a year now, I have been wearing contact lenses daily. I have heard that I would have to stop wearing contact lenses for 7 days before the procedure. Is that true? I am asking because I don’t own my old glasses anymore and I would have to buy a new pair – which would be a remarkable expense.
Greeting, thanks in advance for your response.
Jakub

Doctor’s answer
Before the laser vision correction procedure you mustn’t wear contact lenses for a period of 7 days. The lenses, when worn, change the shape of the cornea. Such change may interfere with the outcomes of the surgery. In order to achieve optimal results the eyes should ‘rest’ and the cornea should have time to go back to its natural shape.

Laser Vision Correction and diabetes

I have type 1 diabetes. Is that disease considered a contraindication for laser vision correction procedure in your clinic?
Aleksander

Doctor’s answer
Type 1 diabetes is not an absolute contraindication. However, it is connected with longer recovery period and increased risk of complications. The healing process might be difficult and may require additional drugs. Abnormal fundoscopy results are an absolute contraindication.

Determination of the stability of visual impairment

Is it possible to determine whether my refractive error is stable during the qualifying examination?
Konrad

Doctor’s answer
To determine whether your impairment is stable the doctor has to compare the outcome of the examination with your previous results.
Those wearing glasses/contact lenses may control the progress of their error during routine examinations. One’s error usually becomes stable around the age of 20. If you have a document confirming specifications of your glasses, we strongly encourage showing it to the doctor during the first examination. It is required that the refractive error is stable for a period of at least one year.

Laser vision correction in a convergent strabismus

Is it possible to undergo a laser vision correction while suffering from a convergent, incomitant strabismus? The condition was operated 3 times (23 years ago) – without final result. Hyperopia +5.5 and +5.
Tomasz

Doctor’s answer
Yes, laser vision correction is possible when convergent incomitant strabismus occurs.
However the mentioned refractive error is quite serious and a qualifying examination is required to determine whether the correction is possible. During the qualifying examination each patient undergoes a series of tests to find the best laser vision correction method for him. What is more, during such examination any medical contraindications for the procedure can be found.
Serious refractive error calls for keratometry (measuring the curvature of the cornea) and pachymetry (measuring thickness of the cornea).

Laser vision correction in case of HCV infection

Is it possible to undergo a laser vision correction when I’m infected with Hepatitis C Virus (the virus is inactive though)?
Jakub

Doctor’s answer
The infection itself is not a contradiction to laser vision correction but it should be reported to the doctor before the start of the qualifying examination. If the patient is qualified positively, his surgery will be the last one of the day.

Laser vision correction and pregnancy

Hello,
I have a question regarding the surgery. My error is -7 and -7.25. For how long after the correction will I have to wait to get pregnant? What about the labour? Can I give birth naturally or is the surgery an indication for a C-section? What else should I worry about?
Cheers
Agnieszka

Doctor’s answer
The refractive errors reported by you are, by all means possible to correct. However, to be certain that the surgery is indeed possible a qualifying examination, during which multiple tests are performed in order to determine any medical contraindications and the most suitable method of correction, is required. After the surgery you should wait for about 6 months before getting pregnant – after this period the results of the surgery tend to stabilize. Regarding the labour, laser vision correction surgery has no influence on the necessity of the C-section and is not an indication for one. The correction does not cause the eye to be more vulnerable, it only reshapes the cornea. Nevertheless, patients with severe myopia, whether they have undergone a surgery or not, tend to have very thin retina. This is why, in patients with severe myopia, a laser operation of the retina and C-section are recommended. During the qualification, our Doctor-Surgeon will be able to assess the condition of your retina and determine whether C-section is recommended. A proper medical certificate can be then issued.

Laser vision correction, contact lenses and antibiotics

Hello. For the past several years I have been using contact lenses exclusively. My error is -8.0 and -9.0. Do I have to switch to wearing glasses before the surgery? I have one more question about antibiotics. For the whole February, maybe even longer, I will be taking an antibiotic. Is it possible to undergo a surgery then? If I work in front of a computer, do I have to take a leave after the surgery?
It is my main concern regarding the date of the surgery. How long would the leave be?
If the surgery can’t correct my error 100%, will I be able to wear contact lenses, or are glasses the only option then? What are the medical recommendations after the surgery? Greetings.
Estera

Doctor’s answer
The refractive error reported by you is, by all means, operable. Before a planned qualifying examination you should refrain from wearing contact lenses for one day, before the surgery – for at least a week. The contact lenses change the shape of the cornea; for the surgery the cornea should be rested and back in its natural shape. When it comes to antibiotics, the surgery can take place no sooner than one week after the end of antibiotic therapy. The necessity of a medical leave is dependent on the method of laser vision correction used during the surgery. If you qualify for SBK LASIK method, working in front of the computer (with frequent breaks) will be possible on the following day. However, if it is possible, it is highly advisable to give your eyes a rest for one week. Should you qualify for a more invasive method, a medical leave will probably be required for a period of one month. If the error is impossible to be fully corrected (it depends on the thickness of your cornea), you can wear contact lenses after the correction. Whether the error can be corrected completely is to be determined during the qualifying examination.

Laser vision correction using Lasik iDesign method

I’m writing from London. I have had a qualifying examination for a laser vision correction. The most suitable (unfortunately also the most expensive) method turned out to be Lasik iDesign. I would like to ask whether you perform such operations in your clinic. By the way, someone told me that a complete loss of vision is possible after the surgery (e.g. as a result of shock after a car accident). Is that true?
Greetings
Dariusz

Doctor’s answer
The mentioned Lasik iDesign method is a brand name connected with the name of the device used for scanning the eye (in our Centre we use Okulyzer). It is, without doubt, one of 3 LASIK methods (LASIK, SBK LASIK or Epi-LASIK). Those methods differ in terms of preparation of the cornea for the proper operation. The most important factor determining the used method is the thickness of the cornea (pachymetry). All the LASIK methods are available in our Centre. If it is possible, please send us the results of the mentioned examination, on this basis our Doctor-Operator will be able to precisely determine the most suitable correction method for you. Regarding the loss of vision due to a shock connected with the accident – it is not true and absurd. The laser only reshapes the cornea and does not interfere with deeper parts of the eye.

Laser vision correction and nystagmus

Hello
I had a brain tumour operated in 2007 and since then I have a double vision (nystagmus).
The error in my right eye is -3.75
The error in my left eye is -4.25.
I have undergone 5 or 4 different surgeries, but I still have double vision.
Can you help me?
Michał

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction surgeries treat conditions such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. After the surgery, the patient sees as if he was wearing glasses/contact lenses but without them.
Your refractive errors can be corrected with laser. Nevertheless, it is crucial that you undergo a thorough qualifying examination during which multiple tests are performed in order to determine any medical contraindications and the most suitable method of correction. Laser vision correction cannot, however, treat nystagmus. The condition is connected with the innervation of the eye and laser only remodels the cornea.

Laser vision correction and severe myopia with astigmatism

Hello, is there a chance to fully correct -8,5D refractive error and a slight astigmatism during the surgery?
Paulina

Doctor’s answer
It is possible to correct the mentioned refractive error by means of laser vision surgery. However, you have to undergo a qualifying examination during which multiple tests are performed in order to determine any medical contraindications and the most suitable method of correction. During the said examination it is also possible to assess the degree to which the correction is possible. The main factor here is thickness of your cornea (which is measured during the examination).

Laser vision correction before applying to a fire-fighter officers’ school

My refractive error is about -4, in 1.5 year I’m going to apply to a fire-fighter officers’ school where even smallest refractive error is unacceptable. Which method is the best, given the above context?
Can the correction be repeated?
Filip

Doctor’s answer
The refractive errors reported by you are, by all means, possible to correct. Our equipment is able to correct errors from -14D to +6D and astigmatism (up to 6D). You are asking which method is the best. Each method is good and effective, each treats visual impairments. The methods differ in terms of preparation of the cornea for the proper operation. The methods in which a flap of the cornea is created (LASIK, SBK LASIK) the patient does not experience any discomfort on the next day after the surgery. After surgeries during which the corneal epithelium is removed (PRK, TransPRK, LASEK, Epi-LASIK, EBK), the patient experiences pain for 3-5 days after the surgery. The suitable method is chosen after the qualifying examination, during which, among other tests, pachymetry (measurement of the thickness of the cornea) is performed. LASER VISION CORRECTION surgeries are usually performed once in a lifetime. In rare cases (depending on individual characteristics), however, when the error is very large or a mixed astigmatism occurs, after the effects stabilize (6 months), the remaining error can be operated again. Each method allows for a reoperation, providing the cornea is thick enough.

Return to work after laser vision correction

Hello. For some time now I have been considering undergoing a laser vision correction surgery.
I’m mostly interested in SBK Lasik method, but I have some doubts because I work in front of a computer, at least 8 hours a day. I’m wondering how long it would take me to get back to work.
Kamila

Doctor’s answer
After SBK method surgery the patient is able to go back to normal functioning few hours after the operation. You would be able to go back to your work in front of a computer on the next day after the surgery, providing you would make a 10 minute break after each hour of work and apply moisturising eye drops. Working in front of a computer decreases the rate of blinking, which may lead to dryness of the eye. To ensure proper healing the eye should be properly moist. If a there is such necessity, we do issue medical statements entitling to a 30 day leave.

Laser correction of astigmatism

My vision is OD: +3.00, CYL: -2.75;    OS +2.5, CYL: -1.75. I have undergone 5 strabismus surgeries. It is now (while I’m wearing glasses or lenses) virtually invisible (0 degrees). Without correction an eye ‘escapes’. The weaker one. Will the effect, after the laser correction, be equivalent to the effect of lenses/glasses? Will it make my strabismus disappear?
What is more I'm suffering from papillary conjunctivitis (because of the contact lenses). Would I qualify for a surgery?
Martyna

Doctor’s answer
The impairments reported by you are, by all means, possible to correct, however, the eye has to be healthy. The conjunctivitis has to be cure completely. Laser vision correction can be performed only when the eyes are fully healthy. After the surgery, the patient sees as if he was wearing glasses/contact lenses but without them, however the operation does not cure strabismus.

Strabsimus

If the strabismus is not visible when the glasses are on (it is somehow connected with the astigmatism), it should disappear when the astigmatism is gone, right? After all, that is what I care about most.
Martyna

Doctor’s answer
After the treatment it is best to wait about 2 weeks. In some cases the angle of strabismus can change after the surgery, but the degree to which it is possible can only be determined during the qualifying examination.

What are the side effects of a laser vision correction?

What are the side effects of a laser vision correction?
I have been wearing glasses for 30 years.
My left eye is ok, my right eye need correction of +1.5.
Generally I am able to function without glasses for few weeks but it results in sensation of fatigue.
When I close my left eye and look only through the right the vision seem hazy.
Is there a way to correct my vision?
Let me just add that I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s disease.
I am seeing an endocrinologist regularly any my hormones are stable.
Daniel

Doctor’s answer
A qualifying examination is a basis of every laser vision correction. During the examination multiple tests are performed in order to determine any medical contraindications and the most suitable method of correction. As a matter of fact, elimination of the contraindications minimises the chance of occurrence of any side effects. Our laser can operate on wide range of refractive errors (-14 up to +6). The surgery results in a best possible correction – you can see as if you were wearing glasses, without actually having them on. It is possible to treat your refractive error by means of laser vision correction. Regarding your hypothyroidism, in order to be qualified for the surgery you have to have a medical statement from your endocrinologist that there are no contraindications for the surgery, that the hormones are indeed stable and that you are under constant medical supervision. Hypothyroidism substantially elongates the healing process.

Is a relapse of the impairment possible after the surgery, sport and laser vision correction?

Hello, I have a few questions regarding the vision correction:
1. Is a relapse of the refractive error possible after the surgery and can it lead (in rare cases) to loss of eyesight?
2. I am physically active, but my activities are somewhat unusual – I have been practising break-dance for years. Would I be able to go back to my trainings after the surgery (even after 30 days)?
My head touches the ground quite often, but does not hit it; I stand and twist on it. Wouldn’t that cause some kind of postoperative complications?
Thank you in advance for your answer.
Port

Doctor’s answer
1. "Relapse of the refractive error", or the differences between the planned and the achieved result of the correction can happen in some cases. The laser can operate a range of errors from -14 to +6, and the extreme errors may require and additional surgery. It happens in less than 1% of all cases. Should such one occur, after the stabilisation period of 6 months an additional surgery is performed (it is included in the price of the first procedure). To date, not a single case of vision loss due to laser vision correction was reported.
2. Usually, a strenuous physically activity can be taken up 30 days after the surgery. Standing on your head elevates the intraocular pressure; it is advisable to give it up for at least 2 months. The other activities can be practised as usual.
A qualifying examination is a basis of every laser vision correction. During the examination multiple tests are performed in order to determine any medical contraindications and the most suitable method of correction.

Glasses only for reading

Hello, for past 6 six months I have been experiencing trouble while reading, it can take a while before the acute vision sets in, normal examination indicates that I need glasses only for reading. Which method would be the most appropriate for me and what results can be expected? Greeting
Jacek

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction surgeries treat conditions such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism – those connected with glasses you have to wear throughout the whole day. The reading glasses you mention are probably connected to presbyopia, a physiological condition which usually onsets after the age of 40, regardless of prior refractive errors. Presbyopia is not a refractive error, laser vision correction procedure do not cure presbyopia.

Is acne a contraindication for a laser vision correction surgery?

Hello! I am interested in undergoing a laser vision correction at you facility. I am currently undergoing an anti-acne treatment. I am taking AKNENORMIN 20mg, at 60mg/day. The drug dries the skin and my dermatologist. I personally do not feel as if my eyes were ‘dry’. My question is: Is taking this drug a contraindication for the surgery? I should add that I am very determined to undergo the surgery as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for your reply. Greetings.
Piotr

Doctor’s answer
Acne and the mentioned anti-acne pharmacotherapy are not contraindications for a laser vision correction procedure, as long as the disease is mostly cured, without visible manifestations, and the mentioned drugs are the last stage of the therapy.
Eruptions and purulent inflammation are contraindications - they may cause infectious corneitis after the surgery. Eyes which are dried due to anti-acne drugs should be moisturised with appropriate eye drops (artificial tears). What is more, for the night, a special moisturising gel should be applied to alleviate the healing process.

Psoriasis and Hashimoto’s. Are those a contraindication for laser vision correction surgery?

My error is – 5,25D. I would like to undergo a laser vision correction surgery, but I don’t know whether I would qualify for one. I suffer from psoriasis – I don’t take any medications for that and Hashimoto’s – my hormones are stable and I am under constant supervision of an endocrinologist. Is there a chance that I would be qualified for the laser vision correction surgery?
Maja

Doctor’s answer
This refractive error is by all means operable. A qualifying examination is a basis of every laser vision correction. During the examination multiple tests are performed in order to determine any medical contraindications and the most suitable method of correction.  In order to be qualified for the surgery you have to have a medical statement from your endocrinologist about the progress of your disease and that there are no medical contraindications for the surgery, that the hormones are indeed stable and that you are under constant medical supervision. The diseases you mention are connected with substantially elongated period of healing.

How long after giving birth do I have to wait to undergo a laser vision correction surgery?

How long after giving birth do I have to wait to undergo a laser vision correction surgery?
Originally my errors were -3.75 and -3.25, but ever since I gave birth (3 months) I noticed that my vision has lost its acuity even more. Thanks in advance for your reply. Greetings.
kachaa89

Doctor’s answer
During pregnancy and breastfeeding woman’s body undergoes substantial changes. The refractive errors may then vary and the test results unreliable. It is recommended to wait at least a year after giving birth for the hormones to stabilise before undergoing a laser vision surgery.

Braces

I am 22 years old and I’m wearing braces.
Can I undergo a laser vision correction surgery?
Zossia

Doctor’s answer
Wearing braces is not a contraindication for a laser vision correction surgery.

Is it possible to undergo surgery earlier?

I’m 18 years old. Since I was a child I have been dreaming to stop wearing glasses. I suffer from astigmatism OS: 1.25; OD: 2.25. I would really like to have the surgery earlier and not have to wait until I am 20. I should probably add that my refractive error has been stable for past couple years. Is there any possibility that I could have the surgery before my 20th birthday? Thanks in advance for your reply. Greetings
Amelia

Doctor’s answer
Thank you for your question. I completely understand. We do usually say that one has to be 20 to have the surgery, as it is the age at which the physical development stops and the refractive errors stabilize. However, growing up is a very individual thing and the errors may stabilize earlier in life. The main criterion is that the error is stable for at least one year.

Is it possible to have the surgery when you are suffering from diabetes?

Hello! I would like to know whether it is possible to have a laser vision correction surgery while suffering from diabetes. Thank you in advance for your reply.
Asia

Doctor’s answer
It depends on the state of your eye – whether there are any diabetes-connected damages. It is also important that the diabetes is balanced with proper pharmacotherapy. Diabetes itself is not a contraindication for laser vision correction.
Final decision is always made after the qualifying examination.

Is there a chance that the impairment will relapse few years after the surgery?

Is there a chance that the impairment will ‘come back’ few years after the surgery?
Is there any kind of guarantee that the refractive error will not come back to its previous state?
Karolina

Doctor’s answer
It all depends on the original refractive error. If it is not a complicated case of astigmatism or a severe impairment (-6.0 and more), the effects of the surgery are stable for a long time. In mentioned cases, very rarely, the error may slightly relapse, but not to a previous extend. Should such case occur an additional surgery will be performed for free – this is our guarantee.

Qualification and methods

Hello. My refractive error is -4.5 and my cornea is 495 micrometer thick with pupil dilatation of 7.9 mm. I wanted to have a surgery done in my hometown but I prefer to come to your Centre as I believe you have bigger experience in performing laser vision correction surgeries. My question is: do those parameters qualify me for a laser vision correction, and if so, which method would you recommend. I know my cornea is rather thin, but I don’t want to travel 500km for nothing. I am looking forward to your answer.
Jarek

Doctor’s answer
The parameters you mention suggest that the best method for you would be SBK LASIK.
Here you can read more about the method: http://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/methods.php
We would like to invite you for a qualifying examination. In our Centre it is possible to have qualification and surgery done on the same day (follow-up visit is on the next day)
About One Day Procedure: http://www.artlife.com.pl/en/offer/laser-vision-correction/one-day-procedure.php
The price of One Day Procedure includes:
-qualification and an overnight stay,
-up to 2 follow-up visits
-professional sunglasses
-eye shields (patients have to wear them while sleeping for 7 days after the surgery)
-eye drops (3 bottles, covering the whole healing process)

I am 37, is there any point in correcting my myopia?

Hello, I would like to know whether there is any point in correcting myopia (OD 1.75, OS 1.75) when you are 37, taking under consideration the inevitable onset of presbyopia in upcoming years.
Thanks in advance.
Artur

Doctor’s answer
There is a point if you don’t want to wear ‘-‘ glasses. After the age of 40-45 you will need reading glasses (just as those without myopia). You would have to decide which glasses you prefer to wear.

When can I have my surgery?

Hello, my question is: when can I undergo a laser vision correction. I heard that I have to wait until my error is stable. I am 19 years old and would like to apply for a job in a fire department, so I am in a bit of a hurry. Are there any other methods?
Mateusz

Doctor’s answer
In order to be qualified for a laser vision correction your refractive error has to be stable for one year. It can happen so that a patient can undergo a surgery when they are 18 but some have to wait until they are 21. It is hard to assess your case as we know very little about you. It would help if you could state the extent of your error and whether it is stable. The choice of a method does not depend on the age but on the results of the qualifying examination, to which we would like to invite you.

Questions

Hello, I am interested in undergoing a laser vision correction surgery but I am 34 years old and my errors are: left eye -6.75, right eye -6.25. Is there a point in having a surgery at my age, if so can my error be corrected completely? For how many days before the surgery should I refrain from wearing contact lenses? Thanks in advance for your reply.
Beata

Doctor’s answer
Hello, the error you mention is by all means operable, and your age is perfectly fine. The most efficient method in your case would be the SBK LASIK procedure, if only your cornea is thick enough. If it isn’t, an Epi-LASIK procedure is the most appropriate one. During qualifying examination, after carious tests, the best method for you will be chosen and the effect of the correction will be presented to you. On the day you qualification will be scheduled you shouldn’t wear your contact lenses. What is more, for 7 days before the surgery you shouldn’t wear contact lenses as well.

Return to a normal life

Question: I am 21 and I want a laser vision correction. My error is stable. How long after the surgery would I have to wait to return to my normal life?
Rafał

Doctor’s answer
If your error is stable, then yes, the surgery is possible. Regarding the return to normal everyday life – it is possible on the next day after the surgery.

For how long will I have to attend the follow-up visits?

I use +2.7 for reading and +1.75 for other activities (based on an examination form 2011). I work abroad and would like to know how long I would have to wait for al follow-up examination, because I will be staying in Poland for one week only.
Piotr

Doctor’s answer
Hello, the most important, first follow-up takes place on the next day after the surgery. It would be great if you could also attend the second one – usually after one week. You can also see the doctor back at home. For foreign patients we provide a Passport including all technical details of the surgery in English. What is more, every patient is provided with an Information Card.

Few questions

Hello, I have already read quite a lot on laser vision correction methods and complications. I have 3 more questions:
1. Is the surgery at your Centre ‘tailored’ basing on the results of the preliminary examination and map of the cornea or is the laser ‘preset’?
2. I am wondering about the complications connected with night vision after SBK Lasik surgery – is the optic sphere of your laser big enough to be used on larger pupils? Also, what is the probability of onset of less or more transient dry eye syndrome after SBK Lasik surgery?
3. I work as an IT specialist. Can working in front of a computer for long hours be a cause of a regression of a total correction? Currently: OS -5.5D astigmatism -3.5D; OD -5,5D, astigmatism -4.5D.
Thank you in advance for your answer.
Kamil

Doctor’s answer
1. The course of the surgery is planned according to the results of corneal mapping and the refractive test (objective and subjective). Performing a Custom HOA (Higher Order Aberrations) correcting surgery is not recommended as it may result in removing much more of the corneal epithelium than a surgery using so called ‘preset’ laser.
2. SBK method is not connected with optical sphere (it can be 8,0nm max). It is not recommended to widen the optical sphere in high refractive errors. In comparison with conventional LASIK method, the SBK surgeries are followed by lower degree of ailments connected with the Dry Eye Syndrome.
You can find more details about SBK LASIK method here.
3. Working in front of a computer should not cause a relapse, however, in a case of such severe astigmatism (3,5D and 4,5D), a possibility of regression cannot be ruled out.

Follow-up visit

I was qualified for a laser vision correction surgery last week. It is going to take place on Friday the 18th of April. According to the recommendations and ‘Patient’s statement’ a follow-up visit takes place on the next day after the surgery. In my case it would be on Saturday, but your webpage states that your Centre is closed on Saturdays. How am I then supposed to attend the follow-up visit on that day?
Tomasz

Doctor’s answer
The follow-up visits will, of course, take place as planned – on the next day after the surgery. I will be admitting patients after 10:00 am.

Activities after the laser vision correction surgery

Hello, my errors are -4.5 and -4 with astigmatism. I am 22 years old. I would like to undergo the surgery in September. I am an athlete – rugby player, and I spend a lot of time on physical activities (gym, jogging, cycling). For how long after the surgery will I have to resign from those? How long will I have to wait before I can run or ride a bike?
Sylwester

Doctor’s answer
Light activities can be taken up as soon as the next day after the surgery. However, the strenuous ones should be postponed for at least a month.

Hyperopia or presbyopia

My glasses are: left +3.5, right +1.5. Do I qualify for the procedure? I would only like to have left eye ‘corrected’ as with the right one I can see perfectly fine.
Michał

Doctor’s answer
Unfortunately you have provided too little information to determine whether you would qualify for a laser vision correction surgery. You also haven’t stated your age. It is important to determine whether your impairment is an actual refractive error or is that due to an age related loss of the accommodation – ant it is impossible to know that just from the power of your glasses. To answer this question you would have to have your eyes tested with a refractometer. Presbyopia cannot be treated by means of Laser Vision Correction. We would like to invite you for a qualifying examination. On the basis of the results I will be able to explain everything to you.

Do I qualify?

I am 54 year old – I have 4.75 in my right eye and 3.5 in the left – astigmatism. Could I have my right eye corrected by laser? Age-related weariness: right eye 2.5, left eye 1.25. Thank you.
jadwiga

Doctor’s answer
Both your age and refractive errors qualify you for a laser vision correction surgery. I do not see any contraindications for correcting both right and left eye. I invite you for an examination to rule out any diseases of the eye and determine the possibilities and outcomes of the surgery in detail.

Laser correction and age

Do I have to be over 21 to undergo a laser vision correction surgery?
Ada

Doctor’s answer
You have to be at least 20 to undergo the surgery. Also, the error has to be stable.

Vision correction after scleroplasty

I suffer from myopia (-6) and astigmatism, I had a scleroplasty 5 years ago, can I undergo a laser vision correction surgery?
Kashia

Doctor’s answer
Undergoing a scleroplasty in the past is not a contraindication for a laser vision corrected surgery. If your error is stable, you are over 20 years old and the qualifying examination goes well removal of the error should be possible. I would like to invite you for a qualifying examination.

Birth control and laser vision correction surgery

HELLO. One month ago I have gone off the pill, I have an appointment for a qualifying examination in 8 days. I simply didn’t think of it when I was making the appointment. Is it a serious contraindication? What are the possible side effects if I decide to undergo a surgery anyway? Greetings
Renate

Doctor’s answer
Hormonal imbalance may extend the healing process. This is why it is not recommended to go off the pill in the perioperative period. One month is more than enough for the surgery to be safe. You should go back on the pill until the eyes are fully healed (1-3 months).

The range of corrected errors

Hello. I’m 38 years old and I suffer from myopia; right eye -8D, left eye -9D, additionally a slight astigmatism. Ophthalmologist has diagnosed a vascular hypertrophy in my left eye probably caused by extensive use of contact lenses (over 20 years). Due to my line of work I cannot wear glasses all the time and correcting my vision to at least -1D (if total correction is impossible) would be a true rescue. It has been 17 years since I had undergone a scleroplasty in Szklarska Poręba 17 and since then my vision has worsened only slightly (maybe 1-2D). First of all, I would like to know if it’s possible to reduce my refractive error. Secondly, you claim to operate on errors up to -14D while other clinics seem to only reduce errors up to -10D – where does this difference come from?
Marek

Doctor’s answer
Both your error and age qualify you for a correction. In order to determine whether such surgery is possible a series of tests has to be performed. Only with the results of the examination I will be able to tell whether it is possible to remove to error completely or only reduce. The crucial factor here is the thickness of your cornea. Divergences in values of corrected errors come from the specifications of the laser used during the surgery. You can compare those values here: http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/ProductsandMedicalProcedures/SurgeryandLifeSupport/LASIK/ucm192109.htm .
The sole method of the correction is also a big factor, e.g. a flap created in SBK LASIK method is approximately 50% thinner then the flap created in traditional LASIK surgery, thus saving 90 micrometers of the substantia propia of the cornea – which widens the range of the correction.

Severe myopia

I am 20 years old (will turn 21 in September). My errors are -13 and -12 and have been stable for past 3 years. Is it possible to correct errors of this order? If yes, which method would be most appropriate?
Sylwia

Doctor’s answer
It is possible to completely treat myopia up to -14D. If the qualifying examination reveals no contraindications and the cornea is thick enough, it will be possible to perform the surgery. The method of the correction is to be determined basing on the results of the examination and anamnesis.

Healing

Hello. Is there any correlation between the time of the year in which the correction is performed and the length of the healing period (e.g. cold weather in winter or high level of insolation during the summer)? For how long do physical activities have to be avoided? Is it necessary to go on a medical leave after the surgery?
Ewa

Doctor’s answer
There is no correlation between the time of the year and the length of the healing period. Throughout the whole year the eyes heal just the same, however they have to be protected with sunglasses (which are provided by us). Light physical activities can be taken up one week after the surgery, but you will have to wait for at least a month to start any strenuous activities. Medical leave is not necessary. However, if you work in smoky or dusty place or your work is connected with heavy physical activity you will be given a proper medical statement.

Age and laser vision correction

My 15 y.o. son suffers from astigmatism and wears glasses. Recently he has been constantly saying that he wants to start wearing contact lenses. However I have been told that it will be extremely difficult to find proper ones for him due to nature of his error. The ones I would like him to wear are up to +2.2 CYL. Is his astigmatism possible to correct? OD +1.5 CYL +3.0 axis 100; OS 2.0, CYL +3, axis 85; pupil 62. I am looking forward to your quick reply.
sabi

Doctor’s answer
It is too early for a Laser Vision Correction. Your son would have to be at least 20 years old and have a stable error for at least a year to be considered for the surgery.

Stability of the error

Hello I am 25, on year ago I had my glasses changed, recently I had an appointment and the doctor told me that my error is still progressing, is it possible at my age? I am tired of wearing glasses, I don’t know what to do, the error in my right eye is almost -8, CYL -1.75 axis 30; left eye -7.75 CYL -1,75, axis 165. For how long does the error have to be stable to be qualified for a laser vision correction? Does the surgery reduce the refractive error completely?
Marta

Doctor’s answer
Changing the power of glasses is not always a result of a progression of the error. Sometimes a weaker lens is prescribed to encourage the eye to work. You shouldn’t then rely solely on the prescribed glasses, the actual refractive error is more important. If you have the results of the previous examination, it would be good to compare them to the current state of your eye. At age of 25 your error should have already stabilised, but not necessarily. If you would come to our centre for an examination we would be able to talk through possible options and together decide whether to have the surgery now or later. It seems that it is possible to remove your error completely, but to be sure I would have to know the results of the examination.

Qualifying for a surgery

Hello, my errors are -6.0 and -4.75, I am 24, when will I be able to undergo a surgery?
Is it possible to remove those errors completely?
What is the most appropriate method for me?
Emilia

Doctor’s answer
The age of 24 is appropriate for the surgery. If the error is stable and the outcome of the qualifying examination is good, you will be able to undergo a surgery. I will be able to choose the most appropriate method for you after the examination.

Strenuous exercise and complications

Hello. I am working in uniformed services and that’s why I would like to have a laser vision correction surgery. I suffer from myopia (-3) and slight astigmatism. Ophthalmologist, after a preliminary examination, said that I would qualify for Laser Vision Correction surgery but only after pachymetry (which he wasn’t able to perform). However I am worried because my pupils are not situated centrally – they are shifted medially and upward. Additionally, I am an athlete and I actively engage in various strenuous exercises.
Is that a contraindication for the surgery?
How long after the surgery would I have to wait to return to regular physical activity? I have heard that it is possible to completely lose visual acuity and to have double vision after the surgery, how often does it happen? What does it result from? Thanks in advance.
karol

Doctor’s answer
Taking your errors into consideration it indeed looks like you are a fine candidate for a Laser Vision Correction surgery. Just as your doctor said, the thickness of your cornea (along with few other parameters) has to be checked to fully qualify you for a surgery. It is not uncommon for the pupils to be decentred but to determine whether the misalignment of your pupils will be an obstacle during the surgery I would have to examine them.
Usually the cornea heals for about 10 days and after that you can return to physical activities. However I would strongly recommend you to avoid strenuous exercises for at least a month after the surgery. The mentioned complications are extremely rare (according to multiple studies the probability of all of complications is lower than 0.5%). It is hard to tell what causes them as the main purpose of the qualification process is to rule out any risk of them occurring. Despite that, after Laser Vision Correction, just after as any other surgery, some complications may occur.

How to prepare?

Is this qualifying examination painful? Do I have to prepare for them? Will I be entitled to a medical leave after the surgery (I work in front of a computer and I have heard that it is not recommended after the surgery).
Marzena

Doctor’s answer
Qualifying examination is not painful at all.
Before the examination you should restrain from wearing contact lenses for at least a day and you should be driving a car for about 3-4 hours after it (that’s because the eye drops used during the examination temporarily impair vision). No further preparations have to be made. After the surgery you will be given a proper statement entitling you to one week (or longer) medical leave. You can return to work after 2 days, however it is advisable to minimise the time spent in front of the computer during the first week after the surgery.

Reduction of the error

Hello I have a question regarding the Laser Vision Correction.
My error is quite big (+8 in each eye). I would like to know if it is possible to reduce it.
Ula

Doctor’s answer
There is a chance to completely reduce your error. However there is an option that only a partial reduction will be possible. To determine available options and expected result of the surgery a specialist qualifying examination is needed.

Congenital visual impairment

I need a full diagnostics of my eyes (also for the surgery). I have a congenital visual impairment – hyperopia, I had a strabismus surgery at the age of 5 (I am 49 now). I have been treated for glaucoma. After that some other doctor said that it is not glaucoma. For some time now I have been noticing a decline in my vision. Today I hardly see any letters and have to squint to read anything. I work mostly with my left eye as my right eye is very weak.
Krystyna

Doctor’s answer
The above description does not allow to determine whether Laser Vision Correction is possible in your case. Glaucoma has to be ruled out and further examination of the right eye is needed. To have a full perspective you would have to undergo a qualifying examination.

Reading glasses

I would love to read without glasses – they are really annoying. I am 53 years old.
Ala

Doctor’s answer
Laser Vision Correction does not treat presbyopia. It is a natural process of loss of the eyes’ ability to accommodate and that is why most of people need reading glasses after the age of 40. Excimer laser allows for an operation called monovision – the dominant eye will be responsible for seeing distant things while the other will be used for near vision.

Strabismus

I suffer from strabismus. Can you help me?
Piotr

Doctor’s answer
We do not operated strabismus in our centre.

Birth control and surgery

Is it necessary to go off the pill before the surgery? How long before and how long after the surgery would I have to stop taking oral birth control?
Aleksandra

Doctor’s answer
Birth control drugs should be taken as usual. You should not stop taking them for 3 months before and 3 months after the surgery.

Qualification

I am 20 years old. I have had a visual impairment since I remember but I hate wearing glasses. The ophthalmologist said that I have -3.5 in both eyes. Is it possible to fully correct this error, my doctor said it is impossible which made me very sad. Will I even get a driving license with such impairment? Is my error really too big for the correction? Please answer.
Michalina

Doctor’s answer
The error reported by you (-3.5) is an error of a medium order and it is possible to correct it completely. It is possible to correct myopia up to -14D. You are by all means a good candidate for a qualifying examination.

Astigmatism

I am 21 years old. I wear glasses because I was diagnosed with astigmatism few years ago. For past 2 years my error has been stable. Is it possible to treat astigmatism by means of Laser Vision Correction? Is there a possibility of a relapse? Thanks.
Kamila

Doctor’s answer
Astigmatism up to 5D can be corrected. However, only after full examination of your eyes I will be able to inform you about the possibilities and expected effects of the surgery. The qualifying examination consists of: determination of the refractive error, ophthalmoscopy, fundoscopy, pachymetry and videokeratography. All above tests will allow to determine the nature of the astigmatism as well as the possible ways of treatment.

Myopia -20D

Is it possible to correct an error of -20D? Or at least to reduce it by half?
Katarzyna

Doctor’s answer
Unfortunately it is not possible to correct an error of this order. Neither is it possible to reduce it. An implantation of an intraocular lens might be an option for you.

Pacemaker

I would like to undergo a laser vision correction surgery. Nevertheless, I have a question, is an implanted ICD a contraindication for a Laser Vision Correction?
Błażej

Doctor’s answer
Unfortunately an ICD, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator as I presume, disqualifies you as a candidate for a Laser Vision Correction.

I am 61 year old. I wear glasses. Is correction possible in my case?

I am 61 year old. I wear glasses (right eye SPH +2.00 CYL +1.00 axis 105 left eye +2.50 +2.00 axis 65). Is correction possible in my case?
Edward

Doctor’s answer
Laser Vision Correction surgeries are generally performed before the age of 60-65. Of course, age is not an only factor and the general health status is much more important. If you are not suffering from any disqualifying diseases (such as: glaucoma, cataract, diabetes mellitus, hipo- or hyperthyroidism, neoplasms) there is possibility that you could qualify for the surgery. To rule out any contraindications, s a series of tests is performed. Qualification is also backed up by a medical examination. Your error is within the range of the correction but to qualify you have to fulfil few other requirements.

Strabismus

Hello, I have a question, I am 31 years old and a congenital visual impairment (strabismus). Every ophthalmologist has told me that it is too late to operate it, greetings.
Krzysztof

Doctor’s answer
Laser vision correction can treat only refractive errors – myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Operating strabismus is connected with operating on the muscles of the eye. We do not perform such surgeries in our centre.

Age for a laser correction

Could you please tell me what is the minimum age for a Laser Vision Correction? I am 19 years old, thanks.
niki

Doctor’s answer
Laser Vision Correction surgery can be performed only when the refractive error has been stable for at least a year. Usually such state is achieved after 20 years of age, when the eye stops growing. That is why it is advisable to wait until after 20th birthday for the surgery.

Follow-up visits

Are the follow-up visits necessary (I will be around only for 2 weeks), what is the efficiency of astigmatism treatment?
Wojciech

Doctor’s answer
It is highly recommended to have to follow-up visits. The most important are the first to visits – on the next day after the surgery and 7 days later. However, it would be advisable to also see an ophthalmologist 30 days after the surgery. The highest risk of an infection is during the first 24-72 hours after the surgery. If the patient takes care about himself, follows the recommendations and applies eye drops regularly there is no need to have the eyes controlled. Of course you have to supply yourself with an appropriate amount of eye drops before leaving. Astigmatism can be corrected successfully up to 5D. It depends the results of the keratography, also the thickness of the cornea is important.

Surgery at the age of 52

Is it possible to have Laser Vision Correction at the age of 52? Is it dangerous?
Grażyna

Doctor’s answer
Laser Vision Correction surgeries are usually performed before the age 60. It does not get more dangerous when you get older, however a good overall health status is required. Every patient has to go through a qualifying examination in our centre.

Hyperopia

Is it possible to correct errors: +4.5, +6.0?
aneta

Doctor’s answer
Yes, errors up to +6 can be corrected down to 0, providing that no contraindications occur...

Stability of my error

Hello I am interested in undergoing a laser vision correction and I have had a test to check whether I can do it. All the answers were positive, apart from one – my impairment has not been stable for one year. I am myopic in both eyes (-4.5). I am 23 years old. Would recommend having an operation in these circumstances? Greetings.
Alicja

Doctor’s answer
You are old enough to have your eyes operated. When it comes to the stability of the error – a progression of the error exceeding 1-2D (over a period of one year) is a contraindication. In such case it is advisable to wait. It would be great if you could have your eyes examined in our Centre in order to rule out any contraindications. After the examination we will able to decide on further course of treatment.

Public refund of Laser Vision Correction

I am interested whether Laser Vision Correction surgeries are refunded by the NFZ. Is there a possibility of at least a partial return of the expenses connected with the surgery?
Mateusz

Doctor’s answer
Unfortunately, Laser Vision Correction surgeries are not refunded by the Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia. Refractive error is not considered a disease by them – that’s why there are no resources for Laser Vision Corrections.

Should I have the surgery?

Hello, I have an error of -1.5, I will be 20 years old soon. Could I undergo a surgery by the end of this year, or shall I wait?
Joanna

Doctor’s answer
You are at age in which undergoing a surgery I theoretically possible. It is important whether your error is stable. It would be best if you could come for a qualifying examination which could rule out any contraindications. After the examination it will be possible to determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for a laser vision correction and then we could think about choosing the most convenient date for you.

Question about the procedure

Could I ask you a few questions? What are the requirements for the procedure? (my error is OS -12, OD -10, at the age of 12 I have had a bilateral scleroplasty, since then my error has been stable, increasing only by 2D throughout past 5 years). Are there any restrictions when it comes to intensive physical activities after the surgery?  When could I possibly come for a qualifying examination? Thanks
Tomasz

Doctor’s answer
Theoretically your error is within the range of our methods. Requirements include: age between 20 and 60, good overall health status and no preexistent diseases of the eye. If you fulfil the first two of them we would love to invite you for a qualifying examination. After the surgery you can return to your everyday routine, full convalescence depends on the individual characteristics of the organism.
Intensive physical activities should be avoided for two weeks after the surgery, any kind of contact sport should be avoided even longer. To arrange a qualifying examination you can call our reception.

Progression

I am interested in undergoing a Laser Vision Correction (Lasik). My errors are OS -1.25, OD +5.0. My main problem is that the error has progressed from 0 (left eye) and +3 (right eye) to the current state in just 3 years. What is more, from my observations, it seems as if it is progressing even further. Is that a contraindication for a laser vision correction? For how long should the error be stable? Thank you for the answer I am looking forward to.
Małgorzata W.

Doctor’s answer
Progressing visual impairment is not necessarily a contraindication for a laser vision correction. However, the error should be stable for at least a year. The progress reported by you is not that big, but we still would need more information (e.g. your age) to fully answer your questions. What is more, it would be best if you could come for a qualifying examination which would additionally help to rule out any contraindications. Specialist medical tests and full anamnesis will help to determine whether you are a good candidate for a laser vision correction.

Working as a stewardess

I am a flight attendant. Could the nature of my job influence the healing process?
Agnieszka

Doctor’s answer
Your vocation is not a contraindication. If you will take good care of yourself, moisturise your eyes properly and avoid dusty or smoky rooms the healing process should not be disrupted.

Cutting the cornea

I have a question. Is the cornea cut during surgeries at your Centre? Or maybe you use the newest method, without mechanical intervention?
Marzena

Doctor’s answer
I perform two types of surgeries: LASIK and LASEK, in our Centre. During the LASIK procedure a microkeratome is used to create a very thin flap of the cornea. The surgeon then folds back the hinged flap to access the stroma and reshape the corneal tissue using a laser. In LASEK method an ultra-thin "flap" of epithelium is pushed off to one side of the cornea, where it remains attached to the eye. After the laser treatment is finished, the epithelial tissue is repositioned on the surface of the eye to cover the lasered stroma. I am not sure whether this answer will satisfy you, because the older methods of correction included cutting the cornea in order to reshape it – such surgeries are not performed in our Centre. If you have any further questions – feel free to ask them, I will be happy to help you.

2 weeks after surgery

Finally back home. Today it is 2 weeks since the operation. I have to get used to put on glasses where I took them off before when reading. Driving car without glasses, and not have to use them during the day is ok. The right eye is perfect and clear. But my left eye is not yet clear and sharp on distance. When I close my right eye, I am not able to read the plates on the car in front of me, and the back ligths are "cloudy". They are also a bit dry, and sometimes I have the feeling there is some dust in the eye. It seems like I need different reading glasses for reading, and when using the computer. Weel, its been only 2 weeks, and there is some new rutines I have to get used to that is different from before. Ingers left eye is ok, but the right is not ok yet. She is also strugling finding the correct glasses. She was not able to drive on our trip back from Oslo to Aalesund. If possible, could we get a feedback if this is normal ? We will both visit an eye specialist for a controll as recommended from the clinic in Gdansk.
Alf

Doctor’s answer
Your problems are quite normal, and you should be patient, because vision stabilisation after corrective laser surgery lasts from one to several months. You should also regularly turn up for postoperative visits following a fixed schedule. When you go to an ophthalmologist, please take a copy of the examination result, scan it and send to us. Maybe then I will be able to say something more about your problems. Usually during the recovery period you may experience mild pain, swelling of the eyelids, itching, watering, »dust in the eye« feeling, and later over-sensitiveness to light (light glare) or vision acuity fluctuations (e.g. in a dark room some patients may see with less contrast). Full vision acuity returns within a couple weeks after the surgery, yet vision may fluctuate for a period up to 12 months after the surgery. Alf, it is normal that after correction you need glasses for reading, but they should be the same as for computer. Inger also will need glasses for reading, but not as strong as earlier. This is a result of reduced elasticity of the lens - the accommodation ability of the eyes deteriorates. You suffer from presbyopia, which manifests itself in the necessity to wear glasses for reading. If you have some more questions or need some clarifications I’m at your disposal.

Refractive error +4D

I suffer from hyperopia OD +4.0, OS +4.0, I am 27 years old. I wear glasses. I see much better with my left eye than with my right eye. After closing the left eye I cannot see clearly, however when I close the right eye I can see all the contours but I experience problems while reading. Can Laser Vision Correction help me?
Gregory

Doctor’s answer
Theoretically you refractive error is operable.
Hyperopia can be corrected up to +6D, but I have successfully operated aberrations of even higher order. An error of +4D can be usually corrected to 0, providing that no medical contraindications occur (e.g. thin cornea). Qualification is only possible after the qualifying examination.

High myopia

I am 16 years old and right now my refractive errors are -7.5 and -8.5. It is a genetic disorder (my grandpa has very severe impairment of around -11 and my grandma has glaucoma, they are parents of my mother) I don’t know if that is of any importance. Last year I have had an examination in Warsaw (I think it was HRT) and it has shown that I am not in danger of developing glaucoma. My impairment progresses at the rate of 1 D per year. For the past 4 years I have been wearing Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses which were supposed to help me but failed to do so (progression didn’t stop). To the point: My impairment will probably keep progressing at this rate until I turn 21 (that’s when the progression should stop) and my error will then be -13D. Does it disqualify me from the surgery?
Paweł

Doctor’s answer
Laser Vision Correction surgeries can treat myopia up to -14D, so if the rate of progression stays the same and there will be no other medical contraindications you will be able to undergo the surgery. Obviously, I will be able to qualify you for the surgery only after the qualifying examination which is crucial as it allows to rule out any contraindications such as keratoconus or too thin cornea.

Surgery on both eyes

I have watched a successful LASIK surgery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-TUMw1FTmY
so I am pretty well informed :-). I have also watched an example of a failed surgery. Question: does having both eyes operated at the same time increase the risks connected with failure during the surgery?
Tomasz

Doctor’s answer
Having both eyes operated at the same time does not increase the risk of complications.
LASIK method can be successfully used on both eyes at the same time. It is much more comfortable for the patient in terms of time saving and stress reduction to have a ‘double’ surgery than to have each eye operated separately. However, it is your decision – I can operate each eye separately.

Physical activity after the surgery

In the postoperative recommendations I found a point which says that I should restrain from physical activities after the surgery. Does that apply to every type of activity? Which sports are allowed?
pacjent

Doctor’s answer
The exact period in which you should restrain from sports is to be determined during the follow-up examinations; it depends on the rate at which the eyes will be healing. The sports to in which a direct trauma to the eye can happen (e.g. tennis) are prohibited until the cornea fully heals. However, if you will be using protective glasses you can return to your favourite sports faster. When it comes to activities such as gardening, home gymnastics or moderate exercises they are allowed no sooner than 3 days after the surgery. You must very careful not to contaminate or touch your eyes as that may lead to dislocation of the flap.

Do I qualify?

Hello. I am dreaming of not having to wear glasses after 30 years of struggling with them. My refractive error is are +5 and +6 and CYL 2.0 in both. The effective error has been calculated to be about +11. My problem is that I suffer from thickening of the optic nerve – will that be a problem?? Thank you.
Inez

Doctor’s answer
The provided information is insufficient to qualify you for the surgery. I would have to examine your eyes thoroughly. It would be great if you could come for a qualifying examination and bring your medical documentation along. The qualifying examination apart from being crucial to determine whether the operation is possible also helps to diagnose many eye diseases in the early stage of development.
