A flight attendant: ‘When I am on the plane, I breathe deeper…’ Learn a patient’s story

Stewardessa: „Kiedy lecę, głębiej oddycham...” Poznaj historię pacjentkiHaving a refractive error no longer surprises anyone. Although wearing glasses or contact lenses is a significant discomfort, many people simply get used to it. A refractive error is obviously something you can live with, yet there are those for whose life plans it may completely thwart. Far-sightedness, astigmatism or short-sightedness may prevent them from pursuing a career, e.g. in an airline on board of a plane...

‘I was persuaded to pursue a career of a flight attendant by my older cousin who had begun working for an airline a few years earlier. When I graduated from University I decided to apply for a job in the chosen airline. My cousin provided me with detailed information about the requirements for this job, so I could say I learned it straight from the horse’s mouth. Before submitting the application I made an attempt to prepare for the recruitment process as well as I could. I had some medical examinations and I brushed up a foreign language. I knew that I was short-sighted and that a severe vision defect may disqualify me as a candidate. However, I was certain that it would not be a serious obstacle in my case, since my cousin had a similar refractive error and got a job of a flight attendant without difficulties. Unfortunately, I was wrong. It turned out that the airline which I had chosen did not accept such a big defect in their candidates.

My application was turned down at that time, but I now I have been working as a flight attendant for a few years. Looking back, I see that my first failure paradoxically brought a lot of good. During the next recruitment process I felt much more self-confident, and most importantly – I had had my refractive error corrected by that time! If it had not been for that first, unsuccessful attempt, I would be still struggling with a vision defect today. One simple, painless laser vision correction procedure freed me from wearing glasses and contact lenses once and for all. Do not believe anyone who tells you that it is not possible to fly after laser vision correction, because it is absolutely untrue. The surgery comes to the rescue of all those who dream of becoming a flight attendant or a pilot, but so far have been disqualified due to a severe refractive error. I am glad not to have given up and to have undergone a laser vision correction procedure. It turned out that I am cut out for the job of a flight attendant and I am in my element when I am up in the sky. 😊
