Astigmatism and laser vision correction

12.04.2019

Do you have blurred vision and see straight lines as if they were bent or curved? Do you often squint or rub your eyes? Do contours of people and objects seem a bit hazy to you? All of the above may be symptoms of astigmatism – one of the most common vision defects these days. Astigmatism can be corrected with the use of glasses or contact lenses. If you do not like wearing either of them and consider them an inconvenience, a perfect solution for you is laser vision correction, which allows permanent visual correction.

Astigmatism is caused by irregular curvature of the cornea or the intraocular lens. This feature results in the dispersion of light that reaches the eye and does not focus properly on the retina, thus producing blurred images.

Astigmatism is not an eye disease but one of the three refractive errors, beside short-sightedness and far-sightedness, often occurring together with one of the other two. To diagnose astigmatism an appointment with an ophthalmologist is required.
A person with astigmatism suffers from blurred vision, both at close and far distance. They do not see sharp contours of people and objects and they often have distorted space perception. They squint more often, tilt their heads in order to obtain a proper image, and they see straight lines as curved ones and stars as blurred spots. These symptoms may be accompanied by frontal headaches.

Astigmatism, similarly to other refractive errors, may be corrected with the use of carefully chosen glasses or contact lenses, or permanently cured through laser vision correction. This modern alternative to glasses or contact lenses gives the patients an incomparably greater sense of comfort, freedom and much better quality of life. It allows them to practise their favourite sports or to get their dream job, e.g. in the uniformed services. Following the surgery, the patient sees everything as sharply as in glasses, but without them.

A laser vision correction procedure enables to remodel the cornea and give it a proper shape. Nowadays, it is the most modern and most effective method of curing astigmatism. The procedure takes approximately 5-8 minutes per eye (including the work of the laser itself, which lasts from a few to a dozen seconds depending on the error) and it is performed under local anaesthesia in the form of eye drops.

In our Centre laser vision correction is performed using various methods: SBK LASIK, Trans PRK and LASEK. The choice of the correction method is made by a doctor during the preliminary qualifying examination on the basis of the patient’s medical history, type of lifestyle and job, as well as detailed medical tests, including the ones checking visual acuity and measuring corneal thickness and curvature.

If the symptoms described in this article seem familiar to you, make an appointment for a specialist ophthalmologic examination in order to test your eye condition and visual acuity and to check whether you suffer from astigmatism or not. When you decide to permanently correct this defect, come to a preliminary qualifying examination for laser vision correction. You can begin by filling in the preliminary qualification form ONLINE
