Diving with a refractive error

05.01.2021

Nurkowanie a wady wzroku ArtLifeMany people who wear glasses or contact lenses to correct their refractive error (short-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism) often wonder whether diving is a suitable activity for them. They would like to take it up and they feel it could develop into a real passion, but will their dependency on glasses or contact lenses not become an obstacle to admiring the underwater world?
A diving course for amateurs, followed by courses for more and more advanced divers, finally diving on your own – is it only a dream or can it be a reality? When diving becomes more professional, a diver cannot focus only on marvelling at the surrounding underwater world but they also have to control the diving equipment. Clear vision is indispensable underwater as visibility there is significantly reduced.

Diving in special masks with corrective lenses

For those with mild refractive errors a special mask with built-in corrective lenses might be a good solution. There are also special stick-on corrective lenses available which are attached to the inner side of the mask. It is recommendable to take a prescription for corrective glasses with you to the diving equipment shop.

Diving with a high degree of a refractive error

In case of a high degree of a refractive error it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist before you decide to take up diving. The doctor will test your eyesight and assess the condition of the retina. In some cases people with severe refractive errors should not dive below certain depths, and those with retinal damage are advised not to dive at all.

Laser correction of refractive errors

When a refractive error makes it difficult to practise a sport or pursue a hobby, a laser vision correction procedure may be an ideal solution. In the ArtLife Ophthalmologic Centre we offer a preliminary ONLINE qualification through filling in a preliminary qualification form. After submitting the form („Submit” button below the form), you will receive an email response sent to the address indicated in the form within the shortest time possible. If you have any questions to a doctor, you can submit them under the ASK A DOCTOR tab. In order to make an appointment for a preliminary qualifying examination call us or sent us a message using a special form available under the CONTACT tab.

During the qualifying examination the doctor will take your medical history and conduct a number of tests and measurements necessary to qualify you for laser vision correction and to choose the most suitable procedure method. A laser vision correction surgery may be conducted in a one-day-procedure mode, which means the qualifying examination and the procedure itself will be conducted on the same day.

Let’s not forget that a refractive error does not necessarily have to prevent you from fulfilling your dreams, carrying out your plans or pursuing a successful career in your profession. It is worth taking advantage of currently available solutions in order to enjoy your life and live it to the fullest!
