Do makeup and false eyelashes go hand in hand with laser vision correction?

31.03.2021

Both makeup and false eyelashes are an inseparable element of many women’s image – they accentuate the best facial features, make the face look more expressive, and boost women’s confidence and wellbeing. What does the convalescence period after a laser vision correction procedure look like? It is estimated that the corneal healing process takes approximately one month regardless of the correction method chosen for the surgery. It is the time when the cornea is particularly susceptible to all types of infections and injuries.

Laser vision correction and false eyelashes

Unsurprisingly, women love eyelash extensions as they are time-saving and convenient to use. However, in case of laser vision correction false eyelashes should not be applied for approximately a month.

For the first 7 days following the surgery it is not allowed to rub the eyelids or use any cleansing products around the eyes. No eye care cosmetics including creams and colour beauty products should be used for about two weeks after the procedure. Application of false lashes during this time is not recommended as the glue and other substances used for the application may get into the eyes and cause irritation, which would inevitably lead to automatic rubbing.

On the day of the laser vision correction surgery it is not allowed to wear false eyelashes, but it has to be remembered that they should not be removed just before the procedure. You can never be sure whether for instance the manufacturer of the adhesive remover has not changed the composition and whether the product will not cause an allergic reaction. If it is not possible to have the eyelashes removed by a beautician at least 7 days before laser vision correction, they may be prone to damage during the preparations for the surgery (e.g. when the skin around the eyes is disinfected or when an ophthalmic drape is put on the face).

Laser vision correction and makeup

On the day of the procedure it is not allowed to use any beauty products including the colour makeup cosmetics. When it comes to post-operative care, makeup application is not allowed for the first two weeks after the surgery. Why?

  • Beauty products may get into the eyes, especially the powdery ones or the ones which are usually applied near the rims of the eyelids (e.g. eyeliner applied on the waterline) or onto the eyelashes. The surface of the cosmetics contains bacteria transmitted with makeup brushes, sponges, eyeshadow applicators, or by applying the products directly onto the skin, which may lead to an eye infection.
  • The bristles of makeup brushes provide a favourable environment for  bacterial growth, especially if they are used for application of both dry and wet beauty products. Regular cleaning and disinfection of makeup brushes should become an everyday ritual.
  • Eye makeup removal requires rubbing the eyelids in order to thoroughly remove makeup remains, whereas for the first week after the surgery it is not allowed to rub the eyes, even with the eyelids closed, or to use cleansing products, which may get into the eyes and cause irritation.
