Doctors are sounding the alarm: Our eyesight keeps deteriorating! |
28.07.2018 |
Long working hours, reading or playing computer games, bad eating habits, less time spent outdoors – these are the major causes of vision defects, which in recent years are observed in younger and younger people. In Poland, according to the newest study, up to almost 50% of young people suffer from various vision defects. In Asia the statistics is even more terrifying – as many as 90% of people in their twenties are short-sighted.
A visual acuity defect is also known as refractive error or ametropia. It is diagnosed when optical system is unable to properly focus the light rays on the retina. In case of short-sightedness, the image focuses in front of the retina, whereas the image focusing behind it occurs in far-sightedness. Astigmatism is a defect of optical system which causes the rays falling in two perpendicular surfaces to focus in different points as a result of changes in the curvature of the cornea. This, in turn, leads to blurred, distorted vision. The examination of the refractive error is necessary to evaluate vision acuity and its adequate optical correction using contact lenses or glasses, or having a laser vision correction procedure.
We should see an ophthalmologist at least once a year. Why? Because when a defect is diagnosed it should absolutely be corrected in order to prevent our eyesight from deteriorating. If short-sightedness is not corrected or is corrected inappropriately, it progresses. However, many people still ignore vision disorders, thus threatening their health, and often suffering from chronic headaches.
The basic ophthalmological examination is based on evaluating vision acuity at a short and long distance. Such an examination is performed using a so-called Snellen’s chart. It allows for a precise assessment of retinal resolving power through stimulating light-sensitive rods located in the retina. If the person is able to read only the first row on the chart, it means that their visual acuity equals 0,1, and if they can read the last one it equals 1,0. If a vision defect has been diagnosed, i.e. the person’s acuity is lower than 1,0, suitable lenses or glasses should be prescribed. The refraction examination can be done using a subjective method, through applying stronger and stronger corrective lenses and choosing the ones in which the patient’s acuity is the best. There is also an objective method, involving an automated refractor, which allows to determine an objective refractive error in the eye.
If you suffer from vision defects, do not understate the extent of the problem. Remember that it is possible to correct defects with suitable lenses or glasses or through laser vision correction. No matter which option you choose, regular examinations and appropriate eye hygiene are essential. Your eyes are your windows to the world, and sight is one of the most important senses. Therefore, it is worth taking good care of it and make an appointment for a specialist ophthalmological examination or for a qualifying examination for laser vision correction without further delay.
