Does visual impairment affect career choices? |

The number of people suffering from vision defects increases every year. Vision defects may occur at any age, with blurred vision, improper light focusing or accommodation disorders being some of the most popular symptoms which are reported during an ophthalmology appointment.
The advancement of new technologies and spending excessively long time in front of computer and smartphone screens result in the occurrence of such vision defects as short-sightedness and astigmatism in younger and younger people. Can such defects affect their future career and life choices they make? They most certainly can, especially when the future career is connected with professions requiring an eagle eye.
Far-sightedness, astigmatism or short-sightedness are refractive errors which may significantly impede the choice of a career path or completely divert its direction. If we dream of becoming a pilot, a racing driver or a member of the uniformed services (the army, police, fire brigade, etc.), we have to take our eyesight into consideration. In such cases the regulations regarding health condition come from above and by no means can be omitted. In such professions the requirements for candidates are extremely strict, therefore it is worth to make sure we are able to meet them, also in health aspects.
Not only may vision defects prevent us from doing jobs requiring good eyesight, but they may also be a contraindication to work requiring precision or big physical effort, as it happens in case of severe short-sightedness or astigmatism. When we suffer from a vision defect, our dreams, e.g. about a sports career, may be instantly thwarted. If the defect is severe, excessive physical effort may be dangerous, even leading to vision loss.
Vision defects make many professions difficult or even impossible for us to practise, which is advisable to bear in mind as early as at the stage of making career choices. It often turns out that we can prepare ourselves to get a dream job and thus pursue a sports career or a career in the uniformed services provided we plan a suitable vision correction method which will enable us to permanently eliminate a vision defect. Laser vision correction is a procedure which guarantees permanent results and this is why we should not give up at the first obstacle. If we dream about the job of a policeman or a pilot, undergoing a laser vision correction surgery becomes for us a way to achieve our professional goals.
