Eyelid surgery — how to prepare for the procedure? |
01.11.2018 |
An always young, radiant look is a dream of nearly every woman. Unfortunately, droopy eyelids may represent a significant obstacle to achieving this goal, and in some cases they may even impede vision. Therefore, an ever increasing number of people, especially women, decide to undergo an eyelid surgery (so called blepharoplasty). Before you undergo the procedure, however, you should prepare for it carefully to minimise the risk of complications and make sure you will benefit from it as much as possible.
The best candidates for the surgery are both men and women who complain of visual disturbances resulting from excess eyelid skin as well as those with visible under-eye bags and seemingly tired eyes. Excess skin may even prevent women from putting make-up, which is also an indication for the eyelid surgery. An ideal candidate should be in good general health, mentally balanced and having realistic expectations as far as the surgery results are concerned. They are usually people over the age of 35, yet under-eye bags may be genetic and thus cause problems at much earlier stages in your life.
What should we do in order to prepare well for the eyelid surgery?
First and foremost, it is necessary to be qualified for the eyelid surgery by the operating doctor. During the examination ophthalmic plastic surgeon will provide information about any possible contraindications to the procedure, and the candidate should let the doctor know whether any of them apply directly to him or her. The doctor will take a detailed medical history regarding drugs the patient takes, allergies and general health condition. Such examination is of great importance as in our Centre the eyelid surgery is performed under local anaesthesia. During the preliminary qualifying examination, the doctor will also assess the condition of the patient’s eyes. Once you are found eligible for the procedure, the surgeon will discuss the details of the surgery with you and give you some pre- and post-surgical recommendations.
What else should I know?
For approximately 2-3 weeks prior to the procedure it is not allowed to smoke cigarettes, visit tanning salons or sunbathe. For approximately 7-10 days before the eyelid surgery you should stop taking any medications which increase the risk of bleeding and decrease blood coagulation – such as aspirin, ibuprofen or other aspirin-based and vitamin K-based drugs. For the last 3 days prior to the procedure the patient should also refrain from drinking alcohol. On the day of the surgery you should also remember not to apply any make-up or face creams. Women should not undergo the procedure during menstruation and the procedure should be postponed until the menstruation is over.
Good preparation is half the battle and to a large extent it depends on us. Therefore, it is worth paying special attention to it. If you are currently considering the eyelid surgery – make an appointment for a qualifying examination.
