How to deal with eye fatigue?

27.03.2017

Rady na zmęczone oczyWe tend to spend more and more time in front of a computer or a TV. We blink less and our retinas are constantly adapting to varying level of lighting. We work in air-conditioned artificially lit spaces. We read a lot and spend much time driving a car. All of that has a significant influence on our physical and mental state. What is more, it impacts the condition of our eyes which are, now more than ever, susceptible to damage due to the increasingly polluted air. How to deal with eye fatigue and dryness?

The most effective treatment is prophylaxis. We should pay attention to ergonomics of our workspaces – especially the screens. The screen should be placed approximately 50 cm from our faces and all windows should be blinded - that is the most efficient way of limiting light reflexes. It is also advisable to surround oneself with plants and look at them in order to relax your eyes. Every two hours of work should be ended with 15-minute break, and when the task is long and intensive – 10-minute break every hour is an absolute minimum.

Eye drops (artificial tears) may also be helpful. They are of great use for those working in front of a computer – this type of work dramatically decreases the blinking rate, which causes the eyes to dry out and burn. Using artificial tears provides sufficient moisture to the conjunctiva, soothes the pain and prevents irritation. We should also limit smoking. Free radicals which form during smoking damage blood vessels of the eye and may destroy the receptor cells of the retina. How else can we take care of our eyes? By paying attention to the sleep hygiene. It may seem obvious but an adult needs 6-7 hours of sleep every single day. During sleep many regenerative process take place and our eyes – finally deprived of stimuli – have time to simply rest. Apart from that we should take care of our diet and consume fruit and vegetables regularly. The cosmetics we use are also of great significance – we should make sure that they don’t contain alcohol, parabens or silica compounds, and that they consist mostly of natural compounds. Our eyes will be very grateful!
