How to prepare for an eyelid surgery?

05.01.2022

An eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is preceded by a qualifying examination during which an ophthalmic surgeon assesses the possibility and scope of the procedure. Once contraindications are excluded and a positive qualification result is obtained, the patient chooses the available date for the procedure.

Possible contraindications to performing an eyelid surgery

  • Absolute
Medicines that affect blood coagulation (blood thinning) which the patient cannot cease to take and chronic inflammation of the body.
HIFU and plasma treatments are an absolute contraindication only if there has been any tissue scarring afterwards or if the procedure has been performed more than once. In other cases, you should wait about 6 months to be able to undergo an eyelid surgery.
  • Temporary
Untreated infections in the body may affect the convalescence period, hence it is essential that the body is not weakened on the day of the procedure.
Botox injections in the area around the eyes applied in order to lift the eyebrows – constitutes a contraindication until the effect of the preparation wears off.

What do we have to remember about before the surgery?

  1. All medications which affect the blood coagulation have to be discontinued at least 7 days beforehand. This refers to medications containing acetylsalicylid acid, such as Aspirin, Polopyrin, Acard, Polocard, Alnagon and beta blockers such as Mironal. The possibility of discontinuation of chronic pharmacological treatment should always be consulted with the treating physician.
Optionally: before the surgery it is recommended to take vitamin C and rutin so as to strengthen the blood vessels and improve their tightness, which may help to prevent potential dark circles and bruises around the eyes.
  2. Makeup and false eyelashes – on the day of the procedure you are not allowed to wear makeup or eyelash extensions.
  3. Jewellery and watch – before the surgery you have to take off all metal accessories worn close to the skin, such as a watch, rings, necklaces and earrings.
  4. Transport – it is worth planning your transport back from the clinic and have an accompanying person with you as directly after the procedure patients’ visual field is limited due to dressing on the eyelids.

The blepharoplasty surgery is performed under local anaesthesia in an outpatient mode. This means that after the procedure patients return home on the same day. The whole procedure including the preparation and the rest afterwards takes approximately 1 to 1,5 hours depending on its previously determined scope.

Return to everyday routine following the surgery

Physical activity

You can return to mild exercises such as cardio within 2-3 days after the procedure. In case of strength training you should refrain from such activities for approximately 10-14 days after the surgery.

Makeup and false eyelashes

Makeup can be applied after the operated area has fully healed, i.e. after about 10 days. When it comes to applying eyelash extensions the period during which you have refrain from wearing them is slightly longer – about 3-4 weeks.

Remember that following postoperative recommendations facilitates proper healing. It is important to consult all your concerns and expectations with dr Izabela Jonas-Sabiniewicz an ophthalmic surgeon who conducts both the qualifying examination and the surgery itself.
