As summer slowly ends it gets colder and colder. For some of us, however, September and October are a perfect time for a last minute trip. Usually this involves travelling to an exotic, warm country. Holidays are a time for chilling out and relaxing. Unfortunately, during such careless trips we tend to forget to take care of our eyes, we have to remember that even thought we are not working, they are! During vacation we should pay special attention to our eyes and vision. Sun, Wind and hot sand can become a reason for many serious ailments.
First of all we should remember to take a good pair of sunglasses with us. It is very important that those sunglasses should have a UV filter – sun beams can damage the cornea, trigger glaucoma, and lead to maculopathy. The risk of above impairments increases when we use sunglasses without a UV filter – they make our pupils dilate and let more harmful UV rays inside. What is more, one has to be aware of the fact that even the best quality glasses cannot protect our vision 100%, because they do not stick to our face and some amount yof light passes around them. That is why it is advisable to additionally protect our eyes by wearing a cap or a large hat.
Dry air, seawater and high temperatures may make the eye dry and cause soreness and redness. That is why taking some moisturising eye drops with you may be a good idea. Artificial tears will efficiently moisten your eyes and make the ailments go away.
We also should be wary of the water we swim in, not only of seawater but also of lakes and pools. Usually it is rather dirty and contaminated and may cause our eyes to burn or itch. Such swim may even result in conjunctivitis. Users of contact lenses should pay special attention – during swimming, the protista containing water may get under the lens and damage the cornea.
