Laser vision correction and extreme sports |

Glasses and contact lenses can be a real bother when one wants to engage in their favourite sports. Annoyances such as eye redness, swelling, itching and fatigue tend to intensify during such activities.
What is more, the effort connected with finding skiing goggles or a motorcycle helmet big enough to enable wearing glasses underneath or safety rules preventing from wearing contact lenses while practicing martial art are yet another limitations connected with sight defects.
We want to free ourselves from all of these restraints, but is it safe?
After Laser Vision Correction surgery, are the eyes more prone to injuries connected with sports such as diving or parachuting?
Laser Vision Correction procedures are a completely safe and painless way to free the patients from the burden of sight defect. After careful examination of the patient, taking complete medical history including past illnesses, lifestyle and line of work, the operator – ophthalmic surgeon – chooses the most appropriate correction method.
Beam of the laser remodels the cornea to correct its’ ability to focus light, resulting in patient’s vision become more acute. The laser itself does not move or penetrate the deeper layers of the eye. It doesn’t affect the body in any significant way.
When can we go back to our trainings?
The recovery period is highly dependent on the chosen correction method and doctor’s recommendations. Sports such as treadmill running or spinning can be taken up on the very next day after the procedure. Nevertheless, weight and endurance trainings should be given up for at least a month. After that period they can be slowly resumed, however with caution. Martial arts and diving should wait at least 3 months to be resumed. We have to remember that laser vision correction is merely a superficial procedure – it does reshape the cornea, leaving the rest of the eye intact with all of its consequences, such as, in case of myopia, long eyeball and thin retina.
