Laser vision correction in Hashimoto’s disease

25.07.2019

Every year Hashimoto’s disease takes an increasing toll. Its aetiology remains rather unclear, yet it is certain that it is not a disease which should be ignored. When left untreated, it leads to other serious complications. Hashimoto’s disease may also be a contraindication to a laser vision correction procedure. It may, but does it necessarily have to?

Hashimoto’s disease – what is it?

Hashimoto’s disease, or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, is an autoimmune disease, closely connected with our immune system. It is often believed to be the most common cause of hypothyroidism. It begins as an inflammation which gradually destroys the thyroid gland and subsequently leads to a decrease in the thyroid hormone production. And since the thyroid gland has a significant influence on the whole body functioning, the consequences of its disorders may seriously affect many different organs. Hashimoto’s disease may occur in every age group. Its incidence is a few times higher in women than in men, but it sometimes can be diagnosed even in small children.

Laser vision correction in Hashimoto’s disease

Similarly to other thyroid diseases, Hashimoto’s disease may be a contraindication to a laser vision correction surgery. However, it does not have to be a definite obstacle which cannot be overcome and those suffering from Hashimoto’s disease do not always have to abandon their dreams of getting rid of glasses or contact lenses.

In order to ensure a positive result of the preliminary qualifying examination please provide a medical certificate from your endocrinologist regarding the degree of the disease, stabilisation of hormone levels and lack of contraindications to the laser vision correction procedure. A doctor who will determine your eligibility to the surgery needs to make sure that your hormonal balance will remain stable for at least six months afterwards.

A final decision as to whether conduct the surgery or not is taken by an ophthalmic surgeon on the basis of the preliminary qualifying examination results. Before laser vision correction is performed, the doctor has to rule out all medical contraindications. During the examination, the doctor will check the questionnaire regarding the patient’s general health condition as well as run a number of specialist tests.

initially find out whether laser vision correction is suitable for you, fill in an online preliminary qualification form on our website. The form enables you to provide information about your refraction error and its current correction method, rule out some contraindications and ask any questions which may bother you before the procedure. Submitting a completed form does not mean you do not need to make an appointment for an examination in our clinic, but it shortens the qualification period and increases the probability of obtaining favourable results.
