Laser vision correction in winter

28.01.2024

Laser vision correction in winterIn the winter season, the days are short and the opportunities to spend time outdoors are somewhat limited due to weather conditions and frequent rainfall. This undoubtedly makes it easier to follow the post-operative recommendations after a laser vision correction procedure.

How to take care of the eyes in winter to facilitate the convalescence process following laser vision correction?

Immediately after the laser vision correction procedure patients should follow the doctor’s recommendations – apply eye drops according to the instruction provided and adhere to certain temporary restrictions, e.g.avoid staying in dusty or smoky environments, bathing in natural and artificial water reservoirs and excessive physical effort) until the cornea is fully healed, which takes approximately 30 days. What else do we need to remember, especially in winter?

  • UV filter sunglasses – Sunny days and UV filter sunglasses are usually associated with the summer season. However, nothing could be further from the truth! In winter we are also exposed to harmful ultraviolet radiation, so for the first 3-4 weeks after the laser vision correction surgery patients should remember to wear UV filter sunglasses when they are outdoors in the sun.
  • Protective glasses – Winter is the time of the year when it is dark for most of the time, which is why an alternative to sunglasses is protective glasses, so-called zero power glasses. They protect the eyes from the frosty wind, snow and rain, both during the day and in the evening.
  • Frequent eye lubrication – The heating season is contributive to drying of the eye surface. To make sure the corneal healing process after the surgery proceeds properly, it is necessary to remember about appropriate eye lubrication. Patients should use special eye drops that the ArtLife Centre provides them with and if they run out of the drops, they should purchase the same or similar ones that do not contain any preservatives.
  • Taking care of our immunity – In winter we are especially vulnerable to infections. It is worth taking care of our immunity to prevent ourselves from coming down with cold or flu. Infections may negatively affect the corneal healing process after the laser treatment.

Winter sports after laser vision correction

Skiing will unquestionably become more comfortable without additional glasses or contact lenses. The latter, despite being invisible, may cause discomfort in the form of eye dryness.

Would you like to enjoy perfect visual acuity while doing your favourite winter activities? We recommend scheduling laser vision correction at least a month before heading for the skiing slopes. Remember to consult your plans with the treating ophthalmic surgeon during the follow-up appointment after the procedure.

When you go skiing or snowboarding, always take good-quality sunglasses or goggles with you. It is advisable to wear them even on cloudy days.
