Laser vision correction — facts and myths

04.06.2018

Laser vision correction is to many suffering from a visual impairment a very attractive therapeutic option. That is why, each year, more and more people decide to undergo a laser vision correction surgery. Despite its’ rising popularity, still many myths surround the procedure – some of which may arise doubts in patients. Here we would like to debunk some of them:

MYTH: Laser vision correction is dangerous and can cause blindness.
FACT: It is the most popular myth out there. Laser vision correction is the safest and the least invasive of all aesthetic surgeries. Only the outermost layer of the cornea is operated on, the inside of the eye stays intact. Doctors’ experience and state-of-the-art equipment eliminate any chance of blindness. Each year, millions of patients undergo the surgery.

MYTH: Laser vision correction is painful.
FACT: Yet another myth, popular among those who have never undergone such surgery. The operation takes approximately 15 minutes (both eyes) and is performed under topical anaesthesia in a form of eye drops. The patients may experience some discomfort but not pain.

MYTH: The effect of the surgery is transient.
FACT: The surgery can be performed only if the refractive error is stable – this means that the surgery is performed only once and the effects are long lasting. After the age of 40, first symptoms of presbyopia may onset. They include problems with near vision or reading. Presbyopia is a natural process connected with ageing which affects everyone, regardless of having undergone a laser vision correction.

MYTH: Everyone can undergo a laser vision correction surgery.
FACT: To undergo a laser vision correction surgery you have to be over 18 years of age and in good general condition, have a stabilised refractive error as well as no medical contraindications. To qualify for the surgery you have to undergo a qualifying examination during which a detailed medical history is taken and specialist tests are performed. Contraindications include: unstable error (e.g. in those under 18), pregnancy, lactation, inflammation of the eyes, infections and other diseases of the eye.

MYTH: Laser vision correction is contraindicated in patients with high refractive error.
FACT: Modern lasers are capable of correcting errors in the range of -14D up to +6D as well as astigmatism up to 6D – as long as the topography of the cornea allows for it.

MYTH: The surgery is very costly and is much more expensive than glasses/contact lenses.
FACT: Laser vision correction surgery is a one-time investment. Glasses and contact lenses are connected with lifelong expenses. If you were to sum up all the costs and compare them with laser vision correction along with quality of life it gives – there will only be one choice. Check our PRICELIST and see for yourself.
