Laser Vision Correction — what is it?

05.05.2017

Laser vision correction is a fast, safe and painless way to surgically remove eye sight defects such as - hyperopia and astigmatism.

Human eye is a very complicated optical mechanism. Beams of light go through the cornea, lens and corpus vitreum thus refracting and reaching the cornea. Then, the visual impulses are sent via the optic nerve to the specified regions of brain – that is how a clear vision is achieved. In case of refraction errors, the light does not refract properly and do not focus in the right spot, which results in blurry vision.

Every method of vision correction (either laser vision co laser vision correction or by glasses/contact lenses) basically works by changing the way the light refracts and delivering it at just the right spot on the retina. This is why people suffering from above mentioned conditions have to wear glasses or contact lenses. While being a good solution, glasses and contact lenses have one major flaw – clear vision is achieved only while wearing them. What is more, they tend to limit your freedom and cause discomfort. Furthermore, they do not solve the cause of blurry vision.

In contrary to glasses and contact lenses, laser vision correction radically resolves the problem of improper vision and other tools are no longer needed to see clearly.

During laser vision correction, the laser reshapes the cornea. The beam of laser forms single layers of corneal tissue in a very precise way. Thus remodelled cornea refracts the light in a way that allows it to focus precisely on the retina.

Why is the cornea targeted during laser vision correction? Because it is the strongest lens within our eye – its’ optical power is 41 D. For comparison, the power of the intraocular lens is only 19 D. What is more, the cornea does not contain any blood vessels, and all the necessary metabolic substrates are supplied via aqueous humor, tears and peripheral capillaries. The laser does not penetrate to deeper layers of the eye – that’s why laser vision correction is considered to be one of the safest surgeries.

Laser vision correction in ArtLife Centre takes about 15 minutes (when performed on both eyes). Usually, the patient can go back to his everyday life (studying, working, house chores) on the very next day after the procedures. After one month has passed there are no limitations according sports and – what is important for the women – pregnancy and labour are not contraindicated.

ArtLife Ophthalmology Centre offers all the modern possibilities of performing precise and effective laser vision correction.
