Laser vision correction of astigmatism

02.09.2019

Astigmatism is a refractive error which may occur independently of or, most commonly, in conjunction with short-sightedness or far-sightedness. It causes various problems, such as blurred or distorted vision, both at short and long distance. Astigmatism can be corrected by wearing glasses or contact lenses; however, the most effective – and therefore increasingly popular – correction method is laser vision correction.

Astigmatism is a defect of the cornea or the ocular lens which are stretched into an irregular shape during the development process. The structure of a normal, non-astigmatic eye makes all the incoming rays of light focus in the eye’s focal point, thus producing a sharp retinal image of an observed object. In case of astigmatism, the rays do not focus in one focal point. Therefore, the image we see – regardless of the distance from the object – may appear blurred or distorted. A mild form of astigmatism may even escape our notice. However, symptoms such as blurred vision, fuzzy contours, distorted spacial orientation, squinting or frontal lobe headaches may indicate problems we should consult with an ophthalmologist.

Correction of astigmatism is based on the selection of suitable glasses with cylindrical lenses or so-called toric contact lenses. Unfortunately, it is sometimes impossible to find perfectly accurate glasses or lenses, for instance in case of mixed astigmatism. That is why an ever increasing number of people who suffer from astigmatism decide to undergo laser vision correction. The procedure is not only one of the safest plastic surgeries, but it is also a very quick one, lasting approximately 8-10 minutes per one eye. And most importantly, contrary to glasses and contact lenses it solves a problem with astigmatism once and for all. Moreover, if astigmatism occurs in conjunction with short-sightedness or far-sightedness, laser vision correction allows the possibility of correcting both refractive errors at the same time.

The surgery is completely painless (under local anaesthesia in the form of eye drops). During the procedurę the surface of the cornea is reshaped in order to ensure proper light focusing on the retina, and thus obtaining a sharp image. In our Centre you can have a preliminary qualifying examination and a laser vision correction surgery on the same day. Our experienced doctors and highest quality specialist equipment guarantee a precise, effective and safe procedure. Before you make an appointment for an examination, fill in the preliminary qualification form ONLINE.
