Although it may be hard to deal with the physiology and processes of human body change over time.
That also applies to the eyesight: the close vision becomes blurred and reading a text in a newspaper or a book - especially in dim light - becomes difficult or even impossible. It is a consequence of loss of the ability of an eye to accommodate, meaning the flexibility of the eye to change focus from distant to close objects. In some cases the symptoms of presbyopia can be observed after turning 45 years old: eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision of objects and texts at short distance. Until recently the most popular methods of presbyopia correction were glasses or contact lenses, however the progress in the laser vision correction now allows to correct presbyopia by an excimer laser.
This procedure allows to correct farsightedness in the dominant eye, while making the non dominant eye slightly nearsighted (making it effective while reading or performing precise tasks) - the refraction in both eyes may differ up to 1,5 D. Perfect simulation of this effect may be achieved by using contact lenses - one eye is completely corrected with a stronger lens, while a weaker lens is put on the other eye. By this simple simulation patient knows what to expect after the surgery. The simulation also helps to determine whether the patient can function normally in monovision. Surely, the laser correction of presbyopia allows to give up wearing glasses in situation when it is uncomfortable. The procedure is completely safe and the patients can benefit from its effect as soon as the next day after the surgery.
