September is a month when school and university students begin a new academic year. Studying time poses additional challenges for the eyes. Hours spent over books and textbooks as well as in front of a computer screen means an increased effort for the eyes. This is why it is worth making sure you have comfortable studying conditions in advance. It is essential as most of the knowledge we gain while studying is acquired through reading.
The most intense eye development falls on the period between birth and the age of approximately eight. Therefore, it is crucial to take proper care of the eyesight during the studying period. Our eyes are naturally adapter for distant vision. When we spend such a long time looking only at close-up objects, it leads to eye strain. It happens because close-up vision forces the eyes to put an additional effort into the accommodation process. This is why it is very important to take care of the eyes while studying, paying special attention to proper eye hygiene.
Vision deterioration is to a large extent caused by our bad habits, such as insufficient distance between the eyes and the book we are reading, the pages of a notebook we are writing in or a computer screen we are looking at. Maintaing a proper distance reduces eye tension.
What is more, we should make sure that during intense studying we take a 15-20-minute break every 30-60 minutes. Such breaks will enable the eyes to relax and they will decrease the risk of developing short-sightedness in the future.
Another factor which contributes to eye fatigue is inadequate lighting. Najbardziej Daylight is the most recommendable; however, the shorter the days become the more often we study in artificial light. Then we should pay attention to appropriate illuminance and colour. The light should never be directed straight into the eyes. The best solution is to have two sources of light in the room – one which lights up the entire space evenly and the other which lights up the space directly in front of us, e.g. a desk lamp. The light which is directed at the text we are reading should not be too bright in comparison with the light in the rest of the room.
The eyes are the most relaxed when we read in a sitting position. Therefore, we should sit comfortably at the desk. The text should be placed in such a way that the line of sight was perpendicular to the surface of the page.
Last but not least, it is worth emphasizing our eyes participate significantly in acquiring new linguistic and motor skills. In consequence, undiagnosed refractive error may result in dyslexia, dysgraphia or other learning problems. In order to prevent them we should have our eyesight examined at least once a year.
