Six ways to keep your eyes healthy

10.04.2017

Everyone needs good, healthy eyesight and virtually no one pays enough attention until it’s too late. Problems with eyes become noticeable when we start to have blurry vision, have trouble recognising faces and when reading becomes unpleasant. Ehen such problems occur we tend to explain it with senescence and think that it is normal at certain age. However, it is not our age but our everyday habits which may contribute to those problems!

Do you know how to properly take care of your eyes and your eyesight?

1. Smoking is bad... not only for the lungs
Cigarette smoking is a habit which has no positive outcomes. Not only does it cause diseases of the lungs, discolouration of the teeth and skin, but also quadruples the risk of developing a condition called Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)!

2. Care about your eyes when in front of a computer
Nowadays, many people work in front of a computer, usually in air-conditioned and artificially lit offices. It is essential to protect our eyes against potential harm connected with our work. While working in front of a computer, we should make brakes every 10 minutes – just a brief moment to look away from the monitor and to try to focus on a distant, preferably green, object. We should not forget about blinking either. To ensure proper moisture of the eyes, we should regularly close our eyes for at least 5 seconds. Once in every hour we should take a 5-10 minute break to take a walk and let our bodies relax – during this break we should avoid staring at other electronic devices such as smartphones.

3. Glasses and contact lenses are not that bad
If you experience troubles with your eyesight – don’t wait, it won’t repair itself. A visit to an ophthalmologist is imminent – you should get examined as it is quite possible that you should be wearing glasses/contact lenses. By no means should you buy ‘ready’ glasses in shops or drug stores – your eyes should be firstly examined by a doctor who will then help you decide what to do. Choosing random glasses may do you harm. It is also advisable to pay ophthalmologist a visit once every year – even if you don’t notice any problems.

4. Remember about proper lighting
Natural light is best for our eyes. Unfortunately we usually work in an artificially lit environment. It is a mistake, but, unfortunately, in our climate it is necessary. The best we can do is to ensure that such lighting is not too bright or too dim. If the latter is the case – you might need to consider getting an additional desk lamp.

5. Beware of the sun
Sunlight is necessary for our organisms – it prevents from vitamin D deficiency and elevates the mood. However, the UV light promotes formation of so called free radicals which harm our eyes and skin. This is why wearing good quality sunglasses is so important (UV filter, seal of approval) – they protect our eyes from adverse effects of exposition to UV light (not only during the summer).

6. Eat health!
Our diet influences our eyes way more than external factors do. We should bear that in mind and eat green and orange fruit and vegetable, which are rich in vitamins A and C, lutein and zeaksantin which protect our eyes from photochemical damage and have antioxidant properties!

Now you know what to do to be able to cherish perfect eyesight for a long time!
