Sunglasses: a matter of safety, fashion or both? |

Summer holidays often mean increased number of sunglasses vendors on the street. Almost on every corner, on the beach, in the markets, even in groceries shops you can find a display of cheap and fashionable sunglasses without polarisation or UV filter.
Do such sunglasses protect our eyes?
Do you ever wonder if they really block the UV light?
Can it be harmful?
UV light beams – extended exposure to them may injure the eye and influence the eyesight. While we are wearing sunglasses without UV filter, our pupils dilate (natural reaction to the reduction of the amount of light reaching the retina). Dilated pupils let more light inside the eye (along with the harmful UV light), thus making wearing them more dangerous than wearing no sunglasses at all. Such sunglasses are only a fashionable accessory. When buying sunglasses we should also pay attention to the health and safety of our eyes.
The safest and surest way to acquire safe sunglasses is to buy an appropriate pair at opticians. Such places have a wide variety of fashionable shades, all of the with polarisation and UV filter.
In the same way as we protect our skin by applying a UV filter cream, we should protect our eyes by wearing glasses with a filter.
Take care of your eyes – they are your window to the world!
