We tend to think that we know everything about our eyes – after all, we use them actively on a daily basis. The eyes, however, are a very interesting structures with features which are not widely known. Check out these 8 interesting facts that are bound to amaze you!
1. There are no two identical pairs of eyes in the whole world! Every iris is absolutely unique, just as fingerprints.
2. We blink approximately 12 times every minute.
3. The muscles of the eye are one of the most active muscles in whole human body!
4. There are people who have each eye in a different colour. Such defect is called heterochromy and it is a very rare disorder – occurs only in 1% of the population.
5. We cannot sneeze with our eyes open. However we can yawn.
6. Newborns don’t really cry! They only scream but do not produce any tears, not until about one month after birth.
7. During sleep eyes can... repair themselves. This is possible thanks to orthokeratology contact lenses which correct the refraction during the so that it is possible to see clearly during the day.
8. The eyes can change their colour. It often happens so that newborn’s eyes change their colour as the child grows – from blue at birth to green or brown later in life. This is connected to the production of melanin, which gives the iris its colour.
