Visual acuity test

28.08.2014

Visual acuity test is a procedure in which patient reads letters of different size from a specified distance.

Visual acuity is an ability to distinguish between two points that are close to each other.

In those tests Snellen charts for short and long sightedness are being used. They are constructed in specific way: black, matt signs are printed on white, matt background. Those signs (optotypes) are of different kinds: letters, digits, rings, hooks and simple pictures (for children). They are getting smaller as you proceed down the page.

We have prepared some printable charts so that you can test your eyes at home.

TESTING VISUAL ACUITY AT SMALL DISTANCE

*Print the chart in A4 format and place it 80 cm from your face on eyes level.

TESTING VISUAL ACUITY AT SMALL DISTANCE

*Read consecutive lines and remember the number of the last line you can effortlessly read.

Results analysis
On the right side of each line there is a number which can help determine your visual acuity.

If the last line you can read has number 0,1 - 0,3:
Then you are suffering from a visual impairment, appointment with an ophthalmologist is highly recommended.

If the last line you can read has number 0,4 do 0,6:
You might need glasses. Acuity in this range is often referred to as ‘lowered’. Professional examination is recommended.

If the last line you can read has number 0,8 do 1,0:
Your acuity is very good!

TESTING VISUAL ACUITY AT LONG DISTNACE

*Print the chart in A4 format, hang it on a wall on the level of your eyes, stand 4m away from the chart.

TESTING VISUAL ACUITY AT LONG DISTNACE

*Read consecutive lines, note down what letters you can see. Remember the last line in which you could distinguish letter ‘B’ from ‘E’.
*Test right and left eye separately.

Results analysis
Which line is the first that you cannot read properly? Corresponding value describes your long distance acuity.

0,4 do 0,6:
Your visual acuity is very. You should get yourself examined as soon as possible. You have to wear glasses, especially while driving.

0,8:
Borderline. You should get yourself examined. Your vision is significantly impaired in the night.

1,0:
You do not need glasses however you should be monitoring your vision regularly.

1,2 do 1,5:
Congratulations! You are truly eagle-eyed.

The above described methods of testing visual acuity are only a way of general assessment; they do not substitute for a professional examination. Everyone should test their eyes at least once a year.
Why professional examination?

Professional ophthalmological examination will determine your visual impairment in dioptres which will be used to choose proper glasses. What is more the examination can detect various morbidities.
Suffering from impaired acuity, conjunctivitis or often headaches should be a strong signal to visit an ophthalmologist.

Take care of your eyes as they are your window to the world.
