We know how important the equipment, experience and integrity are.

The development of technology favors the process of constructing more and more precise tools and equipment. The experience gained by specialists anables to connect selection and use of innovative methods of treatment to achieve the best effects with the least of interference. The development is not only a new invention, but also improvement of existing technologies. Twenty years of laser vision correction development is a perfect example of technical progress in the last decades. However, applying new solutions may be surprising and the way they are being promoted may cause mixed feelings.

The most popular, contemporary methods involves separating the epithelial flap from the cornea: LASIK and SBK LASIK. The choice of the method is naturally dependent on the sight defect and the structure of the eye, which is a very individual matter. The differences concern the methods of uncovering the cornea tissue, which the beam of laser interacts with and consequently, the amount of time needed for the healing process. In case of LASIK and SBK LASIK the healing has no impact on patient’s functioning. The Epi-LASIK method (performed on patients with a thin cornea and a large defect) requires applying contact lenses as a dressing until the epithelium is healed. Other (older) surface methods, such as PRK and later LASEK, were the first laser vision correction methods used in Poland and worldwide. They involve mechanical removal of the cornea epithelium and as a result, the treatment leaves an open wound that heals in a couple of days, during which patients feel severe pain and photophobia. The PRK method is particularly invasive, because it requires the removal of a large part of the epithelium.

A new TransPRK method appeared on the laser vision correction market in 2009 and involves removing the epithelium with the excimer laser. Although it is the first “touchless” laser vision correction method, during which the cornea epithelium is removed from a significantly smaller area than the original PRK method, but it still creates the epithelium wounds that cause pain. The photophobia has not been eliminated, eithe. The TransPRK method is a perfect solution for people with irregular cornea frame surface, because using other methods for such patients is too difficult and risky, therefor the use of laser vision correction is recommended.

Promoting the procedure to be painless is strongly dishonest and it negatively influences the laser vision correction perception. Since we have been undertaking the laser vision correction projects for many years (in Medical Centre in Sopot and in Gdansk Hospital) we are well aware of how important it is for our patients’ comfort to prepare our staff, choose the right treatment method and the quality of the equipment used, along with the honesty in presenting the details of treatment methods.

We promote only well-tested, painless methods that guarantee a quick return to normal activity and a visible life improvement.
