What is presbyopia and how can it be cured?

11.02.2014

After 40 or 50 years of life everyone experiences trouble with clear vision of close objects, reading small fonts on the screen or in the newspaper, especially while lighting is poor. This condition is called presbyopia.

Presbyopia is not a refractive error; it's decrease or loss of eye's ability to accommodate. It's a physiological process caused by aging, the effect of which is a decrease in flexibility of an eyeball. This condition affects everyone regardless of his or her refractive error.

How can presbyopia be corrected?

The most popular way to correct presbyopia when there are no other eye conditions (myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism) is to wear reading-only glasses.

In case of hyperopia the correction of presbyopia is achieved by progressive glasses or by buying second pair of more powerful glasses. When the error is below -2D reading glasses become needless.

Another solution that provides freedom in everyday life is laser vision correction procedure performed on those above 40 years, who have a refractive error - myopia.

In ArtLife Ophthalmologic Centre we promote safe and efficient ways of laser vision correction. During the myopia correction a monovision effect is created - the dominant eye becomes responsible for far vision while the second eye becomes responsible for short vision. This let's you forget about glasses and contact lenses. Driving, reading and working on the computer without glasses - full comfort!
